1.
quote:
In this case I think they can legitimitatly claim they have actually "invented the wheel" when it comes to a real world 3D WW II tactical level Post D-Day combat sim.

Hey man, the WW2 mod for Myth 2 was out ages and ages ago...
 2.
quote:
You aren't a pommie by chance? Either was.....SOD OFF.

quote:
Feal? what the frick is that? Combination fish and eel? If I didn't know better I'd say you have Aussie blood in you. Dolt! Now, sod off you bloody frog.

Obsessed with being an Australian by any chance??
 3. There should be some kind of disclaimer on entering this thread:
quote:
Choada, you pimple on a boil on a sore on a herpes lesion on the tit of a syphilitic crack whore.

Can't you people be genuinely witty without resorting to language like that?? To think that there are children participating in this forum.....
 4. One question that sprung from my mind was, "Would Combat Mission have been possible if someone had wanted to make it in Canada instead of the USA" I don't know anything about the domestic business conditions of those two countries, it's more a question of, "can good businesses and good business ideas make it in socialist countries" which is a useless question really, since it's not something which is an issue in the real world.
 5.
quote:
Don't blame the exchange rate for your woes. Again another great example of Socialism at work. When the government keeps giving out unearned money, that's when the value drops.

Germany and many other countries which can make socialism work would tend to overule that statement.
 6.
quote:
This is great news! I must go home and sleep now, cause I aint gonna get any sleep once I upload this patch!

Nitsud42 in association with BTS: bringing you the TCP/IP patch!!
 7.
quote:
Please resume being a snert.

Says the man who entered this topic with, "My child," Back to topic, even if BTS does produce "one-off" models, these buildings will probably get modified into oblivion. If I try and play the game using the latest buildings mods, the result is a village of crumbling boarded up dwellings more akin to present day Glasgow or Manchester... In short, the rural aspect of Combat Mission is great, it's just the urban setting which needs work and ideas, and/or an amended game engine.
 8.
quote:
My child, you are brilliant! Add this to my wishlist: One-of-a-kind buildings. Reichstag, Victory monument, Univermag, Colloseum, Eiffel Tower...

Your sarcastic tone suggests that you would prefer to see rows and rows of square buildings which all have the same height, width, length, number of floors, and windows. I have actually come to the conclusion that the buildings which I want in CM2 will not be possible. One solution would be to create a building tile which is one quarter of a bigger building, and then to combine four of these tiles to create the desired effect. The problem is when a squad moves from one tile into the other, as was seen on the Paris scenario. [This message has been edited by M. Bates (edited 11-27-2000).]
 9.
quote:
Unfortunately there is no non-functional scenery in the game as yet. I'm not very impressed with the urban scenarios I've seen, so I made my own. It is possible to make a convincing town, but you've got to compromise a lot. Check out the results at my website.

Yeah, I remember playing your urban map, it has "Trojan Horse" in the title if I remember. IMHO, Combat Mission is slightly unsatisfying in the way the town and city scenarios are played out. Towns in CM lack character. I thought that whoever made the Parisian scenario had clearly tried his best, but was still something of a bad joke from an aesthetic and a gameplay standpoint. I am not getting my hopes up on CM2 solving this: for example, in the scenario editor, there is a maximum size for a "tile". This "tile" can contain grass, a road, a house or whatever. But this system does not lend itself to recreating non-square shaped buildings, or buildings which have rooms inside them. I hope that the Reichstag is not some super-pretty modification of CM 1's church.
 10.
quote:
I just noticed, theres no street lamps, how did those WWII civilians find there way around? Theres no post boxes either,

Or city buildings for that matter... come to think of it, I don't recall any urban battles in Combat Mission. None of the towns look like they could hold more than 100 people.
 11. I think that the mechanics of Combat Mission are good, and the accuracy is sound. But people in this topic have been accusing Atomic of not improving this or that, but don't forget that CM2 will use the SAME engine as CM1 - and everyone here has been attacking the makers of Close Combat for doing the same thing!! For example, I would like to see vehicles go under as well as over bridges. This flaw also stops propper 3D movement in buildings, and how the hell buildings will appear in Stalingrad and Berlin in CM2 I can only guess...
 12. Maximus this is an excellent idea, make sure you provide both lo and hi res if you can
 13.
quote:
The only problem is that you would have to put up with all the Gameranger idiots. Spend some time on the Gameranger chat and feel your IQ drop exponentially. I would actually prefer a standalone or in-game *platform independent* combat mission game browser/people finder. Or maybe we could get our own lobby on gameranger. Since I don't have any friends, a CM game finder would be nice

That's bollocks, TCP/IP Combat Mission MUST appear on Gameranger!! Mark these words: Combat Mission would be one of the top three games on Gameranger, especially since for all the other games there are usually other connection options, but I think that many CM players would flock to Gameranger.
 14.
quote:
You know, I can see why the Europeans like soccer so much. It is socialism in action. A lot of people running around working very hard to accomplish very little.

All sports have people running about. Are you telling me that you live in a perfect capitalist system? The US Government funds huge beauocracies (bad spelling) just as much as any other government. Soccer teams achieve a lot in terms of international co-operation and funding facilities for young people in poor parts of the world, and I can only assume that much of the global population agrees, since it is the most popular spectator sport in the world, so there.
 15.
quote:
I love the History channel as much as the next grog but mostf the sounds you hear in the movies and shows is NOT from the event you are watching. Ever notice that they use the EXACT same winter wind sound whenever they show footage from Russian winters? Most of what you hear (and see!) on TV has been re-mixed, re-edited and sometimes just plain made up. Still fun to watch though!

That's exactly right!! I was watching a documentary on German airpower versus Polish air power, and I suddenly realised that unless every aircraft was wired up with microphones, that all the sounds were fake!... if not exactly inaccurate. Anyways, I always notice this now, even with the newer Vietnam programmes, I still wonder if the sound is real or not.
 16.
quote:
I think that was Lanzfeld's way of admitting he was wrong and apologising. At least, that's the way I interperet it.

Hehe, you obviously missed his latest post - he is still beating the same drum
 17. Will Combat Mission now be included on Gamerangerâ„¢? Gameranger would be perfect for Combat Mission, because the games already there are not hosted by Gameranger, which acts more as a meeting place.
 18.
quote:
You tell them davie boy!Although I think you probably need to explain what a scottish soldier is.Most Yanks think were all English anyway. It seems like just another example of American superiority complex coming through. "Surely were not like all those other nations,I mean our soldiers MUST have been braver, more tenacious, more adaptable, more capable than those oter people, you know, those European and Commonwealth types".

I think you missed Aitken's point, which was that if you live in America, then you will hear many stories of American bravery. Or if you are born and bred in Australia you will hear tales of their bravery, et cetera. It's all down to native outlook. I suspect that a Japanese citizen's view on the atomic bombs is different to the average American or Canadian or UK citizen. And then again some Japanese would argue that Pearl Harbor was as much an act of defence as it was of aggression.
 19.
quote:
You can find that many soldiers of all nations showed incredible resiliance and inititive in the face of gloom and doom at some time but I have just heard of it mentioned about American soldiers more.

What is the point of these discussions?? I can't see how resilience in the midst of dying comrades and flying shrapnell has anything to do with where you are born. At the end of the day all soldiers have two arms, two legs, and don't want to get killed.

 21.
quote:
There's a huge difference between games where you just log in a server for few quick games on a map or two and games where the server has to store status information of each and every player. That costs money. A lot of money, in fact.

I can't see it myself. WW2 grogs = money on tap provided you give 'em what they want.
quote:
Another cost in persistant worlds is moderators. Got to pay those folks a salary, and the games are absolutely unplayable without them. Of course, the games might be absolutely unplayable with them, but that's neither here nor there...

There are always players who will do that for free, just so they can throw their weight around. bungie.net already has such people.
quote:
Maybe you could tell me how a company could keep from losing money with such a game if they didn't charge a fee to play it (or a HUGE price up front)? Do you want advertising billboards scrolling across the top of your screen while you play?

You sound very well informed, just give me a rough overview of what their running costs are and how many mouths they have to feed, and I'll get back to you.
 22.
quote:
Do you realize there is a very real and high cost to a company running one of these MMOL games? When you make a regular game once it hits the shelves your cost are over for the most part (only patching and advertising remain really).

Unreal Tournament, Quake 1,2,3, and many other games have servers which don't require a monthly fee for use. People are entitled to say that a game's business plan is flawed, and that they won't be buying into the product as a result of that.
quote:
Just by looking at their message boards, I can tell that the heavy stuff is going to be more popular.

Yeah, it's going to be Warbirds With Tanks. They are so obsessed with snipers, that no one will be moving in the open!!
 23.
quote:
The worst part will be when some dude with SDSL driving a Tiger blows past your 56k connected Sherman and torches you.

Good point. I play Rainbow Six on Gameranger sometimes, and it is always the "good" players in the clans who are on cable, and the casual not so great players are using 56k modems. My argument "against" WW2Online, is that in reality dozens of infantry were needed and used as against a few pilots. WW2Online will be the other way around: there will be as many, if not more, pilots than infantrymen. This is partly because aircraft are naturally more popular, plus there will be players switching over from Warbirds.

 25.
quote:
Rumor is $50 off shelf... $30 a month... but this is rumor...

Well, I reckon that WWIIOnline will be a flop... paying to play is going too far. The irony is that only "die hards" will pay to play a WW2 simulation on a monthly basis... ... and WWII Online is already shaping up to be a "twitch shooter". Mark my words, there will be 70% pilots, 20% tanks, 10% as infantry and a lot of bored, unco-ordinated players.
