1. We will see who has the most chips on their shoulder when Brown and Erikson next meet
 2.
quote:
At least we can hold comfort in the fact we just don't plainly suck like M.Bates. Truly there is no other example of why the selling of organs of living people should be legalized. People like him just can't justify why they should be allowed to breath oxygen and take up space.

Well, at least I have more words in my vocabulary than 'suck'. Look at my signature. Witty, no? While this thread is full of reprobates, I am MASTER bates. ------------------ Great Quotes Maximus: "And what's that Rob? The rest of the world doesn't care? I can assure you that when Boris Yeltsin stepped down in Russia last New Years, the world cared. Oh wait, you live in Canada. That's right, Canada only cares 'aboot' Canada. The whole world could be on the brink of destruction and as long as Canadian soil isn't involved, they could care less. Does the phrase, "Isolationist China" mean anything to ya?" Rob/1: "Lets just say I dont like americans ok... if you have a prolbem with that Minumis is one of the resions." jshandorf: "Suck"
 3. I think that *not* being able to move under bridges is part of the game engine, and not the scenario design
 4.
quote:
I think,M.Bates, that im right in saying that the welsh certainly were conquered,by the English under Edward the first in the late 13th century.Thats why the English monarchs eldest son is always dubbed "Prince Of Wales".Just one of the perils of having an aggressive, covetous, grasping neighbour, just ask The Scots,Irish,French etc, etc.

Aren't you able to enjoy history without descending into a nationalistic mentality? It's probably worth remembering - although this will be lost on you - that England had an essentially Norman French outlook until the mid 1450s, when the crown still had a legitimate claim over parts of France. Also, are you seriously suggesting that even after France rid itself of its monarchy - an institution that you no doubt dislike - that it never had colonial or expansionist aspirations??
 5.
quote:
Hmm, not sure what you would call the stuff that Eddie Longshanks (aka Edward I) did to them in 1281 (or was it 1181?)...

Ah well, back to the history books then!
 6. Aitken, what program do you use? From the quality of work, I am assuming that you use a Macintosh. Are you using Illustrator or Freehand?? ------------------ Great Quotes Maximus: "And what's that Rob? The rest of the world doesn't care? 7. Terence, It was the UK History Channel, but with all these things, I suspect that the UK and US History Channels share a lot of programming between themselves. The programme was modern (late 90s?), with voice overs by actors. So the American commentary has a little stars and stripes in the corner, and the Japanese commentary has a little Japanese flag. The commentary wording was all made up, but was obviously written to be representaive of each side's viewpoint at that time 55 years ago. ------------------ Great Quotes Maximus: "And what's that Rob? 8. Just had a good laugh at the History Channel today. The hour long programme was looking at the build up to the Japanese surrender, and the decisive factor of American air power in that surrender. Every so often a whimpish Japanese voice over would enter, and his typical sayings were, "Hiroshima was full of military installations and much of the civilian population had been evacuated." "Thank you for atom bombing us, with the civilian area which was central to our military effort being obliterated, we are able to produce excellent consumer electronic products." (Okay, I made that one up). Our voice of Japan also had this to say about the incident in Nagasaki: "The bomb landed close to two large aircraft factories." Obviously I am drawing from memory, but the tone of the programme was ridiculous, and it was obviously intended for Western digestion to clear our conscience over the atom bomb attacks following the conference of Truman, Stalin and Churchill. When the programme is repeated I'll endeavour to provide proper transcipts. [This message has been edited by M. Bates (edited 12-04-2000).]
 9. British can also be a geographical term. Of course, the ancient Britons are the ancestors of the Welsh, who are the only people in Western Europe, who have never been conquered (if memory serves me right).
 10. I can now host and join games. This is Combat Missions problem: Your ip number is not necessarily the ip number which CM uses. It can't explain why this is.
 11.
quote:
But anyway, what's the big deal about minimizing CM? I mean do you minimize it when you play a normal game against the AI?

Well, just say I have finished my moves and I want to surf the web while my opponent finishes his move plotting. Will "minimising" or hitting escape effect the game in any way?
quote:
Now Bates, you didn't like my quote there?

That quote made me laugh because it is the sort of thing people say in the heat of the moment. I will add more quotes to the sig, but for the moment you can take all the plaudits
 12. Q: if I minimise CM on my Mac, will it carry on processing moves in the b/ground or does it mess up the game? ------------------ Great Quotes Maximus: "And what's that Rob? The rest of the world doesn't care? I can assure you that when Boris Yeltsin stepped down in Russia last New Years, the world cared. Oh wait, you live in Canada. 13.
quote:
Bates, do you actually know anything about the war in the Pacific? It's not my first choice of theaters to model, but that's just a ridiculous statement.

Well for one I would not refer to the war as "the war in the Pacific". I think it's scope was greater than that. It's just I would much prefer a game set in Russia or North Africa. We have already established that Combat Mission can't or won't simulate beach landings, so why bother with a Pacific game?
 14. Pacific CM would be a Sack Of Crap, whatever gloss anyone puts on it.
 15. Yeah, but I don't think I would have made that kind of error, this failure to connect has happened a few times already. The read me file which came with the patch didn't always make sense either.
 16. I played Sensible Soccer and the original B-17 Flying Fortress a lot.
 17.
quote:
Is this a vision or hallucination?

A combination of both - vision, hallucination, and hard drugs. I wouldn't worry about making life more difficult for yourself when playing Combat Mission. It may be realistic, but it isn't photorealistic - that will have to wait for my mods - and in real life you would have had the smell of war to guide your actions. So you are proposing an enforced realism mode - I am not sure how popular that would be. I would invest in a copy of Quake 4 and leave it at that. ------------------ Great Quotes Maximus: "And what's that Rob? The rest of the world doesn't care? 18. So far I have not had any success in connecting to TCP/IP games. I get this response when submitting an ip address: ERROR: cannot connect to specified ip address This has happened a few times now. I am not using a firewall or anything like that and I use a good isdn connection so does anyone have any ideas on this or shall I just wait for the finished TCP/IP patch?
 19. I just get "enter your ip number" and then there is a blank space - this doesn't seem to be working. The navigation to the left could also do with tidying up a bit.
