  1. ...Something which you persist in repeating, yet you've contributed as much as anyone else
  2. Without getting bogged down in the terminology of Eastern Front - a term which altho I questionned I would still use - my broad, general point is that Westerners empathise with Germans because they are aggressive Europeans. It's not the only factor, and it probably isn't even the major one, but I think that it is something which exists.
  3. Perhaps your interpretation of racism of different to mine, I have no problem with that. And I said empathy with the German soldier, not empathy with the Nazi party. That's just about what I said and I stand by it.
  4. It's not as black and white as that. It's just your opinion. Your "freaking and whining" is someone else's thoughts and ideas. BTS: I'd agree with that. I would include common usage as a factor in the use of "Eastern Front" as well as the empathy which Westerners tend to have for the German soldier.
  5. The Germans were fighting a Racialist War which their troops oft called the Ostfront. I find it queer to study the war from the Russian standpoint and to have "Eastern Front" as a buzzword in my head.
  6. Sorry to nitpick but manoeuvre is an English word as well as a French word, although their meanings may differ.
  7. I agree with you jgdpzr that "Far East" is geocentric, you have a good point there. In my defence, "Middle East" and "Far East" are regularly used. I prefer "Far East" to "Pacific Theater". Maybe "Pacific War" is best As far as the Russian-German conflict is concerned, why not use some imagination. "Eastern Front" means absolutely nothing except that it is the German perspective. "Russo-German War" IMHO is much much better.
  8. When "Eastern Front" is used generally, and not specifically in relation to the German disposition, I consider it to be an unconciously racist piece of terminology. "Pacific" raises confusion in my mind. To me it procludes the Japanese move into and occupation of parts of mainland Asia.
  9. Why are you guys referring to the Far East campaign as "Pacific"? Japan had as much ambition on the Asia continent as in the Pacific. It is akin to saying "Eastern Front" which is also stoopid.
  10. The Allied commanders and politicians often reveal in their correspondence the heavy hearts they had when they ordered the bombing of civilian targets. But sometimes these deeds are necessary. Let's remember the countless civilians and Allied POWs who were EXTERMINATED by the Nazis, a wicked regime if ever there was one.
  11. Um back to topic, European Union law would have precedence over the law of the German states. Maybe an E.U. marketed version of CM2? Just a thought.
  12. Lol. The Germans in SPR just HAD to be SS didn't they? In Hollywood I suppose most Germans are good Nazis. As regards Eastern Front doing better in Europe, well most of the SS Dirlewanger brigade seems to be ageing disgracefully in Manchester... It would be difficult to base a TV series on a subject that (A) most people don't appreciate ir have any knowledge of and ( "Western" audiences will not have any sympathy for 'Nazis' or 'hordes of Soviets'. Perhaps these ideas will happen when the West grows up a bit and is less blinkeredly nationalistic.
  13. Any new WW2 show would be overkill for me, what with Dad's Army and Allo Allo. (!) Seriously, anyone wanting to satisfy their bloodlust can surely just bung a copy of SPR or Anzio in their video player?? Loads of WW2 video games as well.
  14. With regards to one of your inquiries, I would be surprised if Martin Borman did escape to another continent. He was last seen during the Berlin bunker breakout with Stumpfegger. Years later workmen uncovered two bodies side by side, and the were successfully identified by dental records. One of them may have been injured during a duel between the Russian tanks and Tigers of the SS Nordland Division. Apparently they both took cyanide when it looked as if their escape attempt would fail. BTW don't forget it's also the Western viewpoint which is influenced by subsequent WW2 accounts not just the US view. [This message has been edited by M. Bates (edited 02-11-2001).]
  15. Madmatt, can you keep this to the General Discussion Forum please? ------------------ Rugged Defense England Team Website: http://combatmission.portland.co.uk For all our AARs ------------------ "I drive over farmyard animals in my farmyard tractor, then I laugh afterwards."--CavScout [comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.war-historical]

  18. Hofbauer, You don't need to burn your tracks onto CD: some newer CD players can play mp3 files straight from a CD Recordable. Another option is to plug a portable mp3 player into your stereo system: I did this with my Rio 500 and it sounds fantastic. In would say I have purchased more music because of Napster. I definitely think that th way forward is a subscription service, with the artists getting the royalties which they deserve.
  19. Michael, IMHO BTS should combine nationalties like they did in CM 1 (Yanks+Canadians for example). The French and Belgians could share sound files, as could Danes and Norweigians (only if speaking German). Obviously BTS would want to fit the game on one CD and cut out unnecessary work.
  20. Points values for combined arms Axis are still screwed... Will an operation started in 1.1 be transferable to 1.2?. It's not a major issue since CM is already at an advanced state with 1.1, but I would like to know. ------------------ Rugged Defense England Team Website: http://combatmission.portland.co.uk For all our AARs ------------------ "I drive over farmyard animals in my farmyard tractor, then I laugh afterwards."--CavScout [comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.war-historical]
  21. 1) Mostly play as Americans but am slowing going towards Canadians and Brits cause of early Tungsten and other nice gadgets.
  22. 5. Can I also say this: German-only Fallsjschirmer players are SCUM ------------------ Rugged Defense England Team Website: http://combatmission.portland.co.uk For all our AARs ------------------ "I drive over farmyard animals in my farmyard tractor, then I laugh afterwards."--CavScout [comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.war-historical]
  23. I'd like these new mods not to be butchered by having infinite change textures which have different camo or markings. For instance, I have never played as, or fought, the French (as far as I can remember) and so it would be preferable for those mods to be US-only. Also to keep things simpler there should be generic Commonwealth textures. ------------------ Rugged Defense England Team Website: http://combatmission.portland.co.uk For all our AARs ------------------ "I drive over farmyard animals in my farmyard tractor, then I laugh afterwards."--CavScout [comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.war-historical]
