2.
quote:
Originally posted by infohawk: "I'm sorry, but that's just silly." was an unecessary statement.

Not to me, it wasn't. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 3.
quote:
Originally posted by Master Bates: As a multi-player gaming experience, until TCP/IP arrives, CM is not good value.

Your opinion.
quote:
Especially since once yer tanks are blown, it's Game Over.

If only all my opponents thought that way. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super. 4.
quote:
Originally posted by infohawk: I respect a lot of the arguments made, just not the ones that involve insulting me. Again, insulting the person and not their argument does nothing. Why resort to it?

Why, then, should Steve and Charles respect arguments which involve insulting or being rude to them? Because they're in business? I'm sorry, but that's just silly. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 5.
quote:
Originally posted by Master Bates: It's just easy to get pissed off when you spend 25 minutes carefully buying and then placing units, only for the game to petter out because your opponent is basically lazy. Why should I have to bloody well remind them every 3 turns that there is a game going on?? As regards the other ladders, it seems that they all want "de-briefings" or "reports". So after waiting 12 hours for 60 measly seconds of action, I have to write a journal on it. Grrrreat!!

First, let me ask you a few questions, and don't take them as personal attacks, I'm just trying to figure out where you're coming from. Question 1: what's the maximum number of PBEM games you have played at the same time? Question 2: are you currently employed full-time? Question 3: what ladders are you referring to, exactly? The point of my first two questions was to say that if you are playing 5 or 6 (or more) games of CM simultaneously with different opponents, and you are trying to fit these games in around an 8-hour workday, it is in fact very easy to lose track of which files you need to send to whom. This is not an issue of rudeness or laziness, as you say it is, but rather one of too much to do and too little time in which to do it. Again, I don't know what ladder you're talking about, but the one I'm a member of certainly doesn't require any kind of detailed debriefing or AAR, just an email sent to the moderator saying who won and who lost. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 6.
quote:
Originally posted by infohawk: Attacking the person and ignoring their arguments doesn't really prove anything. This topic seems to be annoying a lot of people, what if they just stay away instead of posting, then it would die out?

You are ignoring our arguments, you know. It's a two way street. Oh, and you also say that it's not the same people answering every question. Well, I'd be willing to bet that 99% of the questions asked on this board are answered by 5% of the board's members. With the exception of a few posts announcing patches, since the game was released, I haven't seen a single message from either Steve or Charles that wasn't in response to a player's post. So yes, I think my comparison was fairly accurate. The same few people always do wind up answering the questions. And when those questions don't get answered, those people get accused of being rude to newbies. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 7.
quote:
Originally posted by infohawk: I never expected a response from them, I was just expecting a response from fellow gamers. Forums are different in that I don't think it's wrong to bring up the same topics. If people don't want to hear it, they can skip the topic.

I suspect you'd think differently if you posted a question which you thought was the most super-important thing ever, and no one answered you. And very few people bother to post with issues they don't think are important. If BTS didn't answer people's questions, they'd get accused of not caring about the players. When they do, they get accused of being rude. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 8. I think Steve just said pretty much everything that needed to be said, but I'll throw this out: infohawk, Lortie, think of this: I come up to you and ask you a question. You answer it. A little while later, my friend, who overheard that first conversation, comes back and asks you the same question. You answer it. After that, I come back and tell you that, in fact, you're wrong. So does my friend. You explain to both of us why, in fact, you are right. We get mad, and start yelling at you. After we yell at you for a while, we go away. In another minute or two, a stranger who overheard this whole thing comes over and asks you the question that started the argument in the first place. Now, are you going to tell me that you're going to be meek and subservient to this guy? If so, go collect your degree in Advanced Footstool. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 9.
quote:
Originally posted by Master Bates: Perhaps bad manners/forgetfulness are more prevelant in the CM community than in others.

First of all, you've gotta be kidding me. I dunno what kind of cyberspace nirvana you've been hanging out in, but this is by far, by far the most adult, polite online community I've ever been a part of. Okay, now to answer your points. Point 1) If you don't like the people you're playing with, play other people. And as Joe said, some of us don't have the time to play more than a turn a day. When you're working, and trying to play 5 or 6 PBEM games at once, time becomes a luxury. If you want to restrict your opponents to those who can handle more than 1 turn/day, that is of course your perogative. Do not, however, expect others to have the same schedule as you. As for your issue with force selection - some people have preferences as to which side they play. And since you've gotta choose sides somehow, I don't see what the problem is. Also remember that CM, like many wargames, has a far more international player base than most mainstream games. Many CM players don't speak English as their first language. What you see as rudeness might just be someone trying to be as clear as possible in a language they don't speak very well. Point 2) At this time, there are four CM ladders: the CMHQ ladder, the Rugged Defense ladder, the Grognard's ladder, and the Tournament House ladder. The first 3 are on the CM webring. I'm not sure of Tournament House's address, but it won't be difficult to find. If you can't find, out of four potential CM ladders, one that suits you, may I submit that you're being too picky? In addition, I have never experienced long load times with any of the ladders, and this is with AOL, which tends to be synonymous with long load times. You mentioned Myth in your post. Keep in mind that BTS is not Bungie. Bungie can hire web designers and online guys and all that stuff, and that's fine. BTS is two guys, and I would much rather see them work on patches and CM2 than put together some fancy ladder with all the bells and whistles. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super. 10. Hah, that's all small stuff. Imagine my surprise when the AI was able to buy an entire Panzer Armee, the thermonuclear arsenal of the Soviet Union c. 1980, and Y-HW-H, all in the same 1000 pt. QB! Now that's cheating! ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 11. Pfft, the beavers were a PR device put together by the USO. Everyone knows that. Send some beavers over, take some pictures of them looking good, paste 'em on the front page of Life and everybody's just so freakin' happy. Meanwhile, the voles in the ditches got no pictures, no women, no sneaker deals, nothin'! Makes me mad. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 12. I run CM on a Dell Inspiron 3700 notebook. Celeron 433, 96mb ram, 8mb ATI Mobility video card. The game runs fine on small to medium-size battles in 1024x768, and hiccups some on the big stuff. Where you're really going to miss out is on translucence and texture detail. If I had my druthers, I'd get a nice fast desktop with a spiffy new GeForce2 and oodles of ram, but yes, to answer your question, the game does run satisfactorarily on a laptop. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 13.
quote:
Originally posted by Elijah Meeks: Better I should call them specious and unconvincing rather than bogus and silly?

I see a difference in both tone and meaning. I'm sorry if you don't. You've put your arguments forward, and they've been rebutted. You've ceased to respond to those arguments and moved into "if you don't see it my way, you're an idiot" mode. You are absolutely correct in that actual war was a much more confused and disorienting experience than playing a game of CM. But during the creation of CM, or any game, compromises have to be made between playability and realism. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 14. To be blunt, all of the arguments saying that BTS should represent every soldier seperately are specious and unconvincing. BTS has stated on numerous occasions (for examples, check out the threads that David linked to, or the quotes tom_w linked to) that for the conceivable future, infantry squads will be represented as 3 man counters. They, and people in this thread, have pointed out exactly why this is so. Elijah - it does you no credit to advance a controversial opinion, and then to dismiss counterarguments as "bogus" or "silly." No one has doubted the merit of your opinions because they are just that, opinions. To you, clutter doesn't matter. To many others, including me, it does. You say the current representation isn't realistic, I say it is as realistic as your proposal is. The ultimate arbiter here is going to be BTS. They've heard all the arguments, pro and con, many times before. Why keep beating a dead horse? ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 15. P. 78 in the manual -
quote:
Regular Properly trained, have likely seen combat, though not extensively. Some German units with a mix of seasoned veterans (often from the Russian front) and fresh replacements (the typical way the Germans refitted units in Europe) can also be considered regular.

Italics added. Seems a pretty good abstraction to me. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 16. My stock response to people who complain about the AI - You think you can do better? ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 17. I'm really more of a Dadaist than anything else. Purple urinal monkey spaceship. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 18. I've never heard of a set-in-stone length that QBs must be. Most of my PBEMs are between 1000-2000 pts, and 30 turns is a pretty good length, I've found. Bigger maps are probably going to call for more time, but it's really up to you. For an attack against a well dug-in enemy, 50 turns may well be what it takes. Before I chatter on - your gut feeling is probably right. If you think a parameter severely favors one side over the other, say something. Unless you *want* one side to have the advantage, which can be fun in its own way... ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 19. A) You spelled Volksgrenadier correctly Airborne/Fallschirmjaegers.
 20. I'm pretty sure you can pay by check. Send an email to support@battlefront.com, and they should be able to set you up. As for TCP/IP play, it'll be enabled when it's done ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 21. How about CM: Berlin Airlift? Call in strikes from Rosinenbombers, ward off mind-numbing boredom as you watch Checkpoint Charlie for yet another freaking hour... ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 22.
quote:
Originally posted by Elijah Meeks: That's not nearly as important as whether or not there will be a sequel to CM. BTS, will there be a sequel??? I think there should be as CM is a great game (Really l33t). It should be in Russia, as lots of people love the Eastern Front (Snow!!! You should update CM and put snow in it, it would be cool.) Please post and let me know if there will be a sequel. Because, a sequel would be cool. Will there be a sequel? To CM? In Russia? I'll take Finland, but I'd prefer Russia, BTS. Please, somebody tell me if there will be a sequel!!!

If this isn't a joke, go and do a search on CM2. And sheesh, if it's not a joke, where've you been? ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 23. And my point remains that Charles has stated that the AI receives no advantage whatsoever. Given that he programmed the game, I tend to listen to what he says on programming issues ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 24. BTS isn't going to release sales numbers. But they've run through their stock two or three times now, so it's doing just fine. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 25. The plain old Sherman suits me. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
