  1. Another thing I'm surprised no one has mentioned is the difference in the efficiency between leather and wooden sabots. Sure, the wooden ones pack more punch, but they're much less comfortable. On the other hand, they're both fairly likely to break up when shot out of a tank gun. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
  2. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by jshandorf: On the other hand... If you want to say that when you see the actual grafic of the sharpshooter shooting that he is letting loose 2 or 3 rounds at that moment than I can see your point, BUT when does a sniper ever open up on a target like that? Usually after that first shot all the targets take cover and there are no other immediate targets. Plus a bolt action rifle just can't do what you are saying. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Again, you have to realize that this is all abstracted. Whether or not you like it, and whether or not it's perfectly realistic, ammo points don't correspond to an equal number of small arms bullets. That sharpshooter isn't shooting one bullet at a time, he's shooting one ammo point at a time, which may represent more than one bullet. Second, CM's sharpshooters aren't snipers in the sense of the word I believe you're thinking. They're not the "one-shot-to-the-head-from-a-mile-out" guys. As for the squads taking cover, this, again, is abstracted. CM doesn't represent cover as "okay, every guy's behind a rock now, so no one can see them" but as "this squad is more or less in cover to some degree." It seems to me that to change any of this would require a pretty huge overhaul of the CM engine. I'm not a programmer, so I won't stake my life to it, but...there it is. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
  3. I don't think the Allies applied winter camo to vehicles in the same way that the Germans did. I believe they mostly made do with a coat of whitewash, if anything. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
  4. CavScout - I think the point is, why would you go to a forum dedicated to a game and say that you thought the game was boring and uninteresting? Since, logically, the people on the board actually like the game, you're not going to do much good except to get people annoyed. It's not as if Steve and Charles will suddenly say, "Good god, he's right! We'll get cracking on that RTS patch right away!" Put it this way - would you go to, for example, an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting and start telling them how liquor rocks and sobreity is boring? Well, maybe that was a bad example since some of them would probably agree with you, but you get the idea. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
  5. The truth is, with CM as with most games, if someone really wants to cheat, they'll figure out ways to do it. If you're worried about it, only play people you know. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
  6. Another thing you might try: I'm pretty sure that some installation programs WILL allow you to install an older version of DirectX over a more recent one. For example, I recently reinstalled CC2 to see how it stood up (it does and it doesn't, imho. It's still fun, but I couldn't play it seriously again) and somehow managed to install DirectX-whatever they were using back then over DirectX 7. So, this might be a hassle, but you might try reinstalling some older games to see if they'll allow you to reinstall an older version of DirectX. From there it should be pretty easy to update back to 7. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
  7. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Dr. Brian: For example, you are in a squad of 10 elite soldiers... all elite. Now, 8 or 9 of them are dead. Are you going to be Elite? Well, I think at that point, I'm a conscript, just trying to save my butt. Nine guys just got whacked, run awayyyyyyyyyyy. I think an abstract system, based on perhaps %loss of squad, can be represented, w/o any major change in the source code. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Absolutely right, this can be represented with positively no change in the source code, since it's already represented Elite or otherwise, if a unit's taking terrible losses, it'll lose cohesion and effectiveness. So, I'm not entirely sure what you're suggesting. Are you asking for units to break faster when they've taken losses? I'm a bit confused here. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
  8. Idiots are plentiful in this world, and unfortunately the anonymity of the internet gives them excessively free reign to say whatever idiot thing comes into their idiot heads. It'd be a shame if the non-idiot people went away because of the idiots. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
  9. No offense? My God, are you really that stupid? Do you really think you can put something like that up and get away with "no offense?" Man, y'know, a lot of people here were willing to give you the benefit of the doubt, but you just blew that all to hell. Well, "no offense," you malajusted moron, but the sooner you're banned the better. Now go away. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
  10. ... It's really not worth it. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
  11. It's my understanding that, during the Normandy landings, many German bunkers did in fact survive direct hits from ship's guns. I believe that indirect fire proved surprisingly ineffective against reinforced concrete. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super. 12. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by swamp: thats why most people are dismissing it or ignoring it or saying be quiet it's not an issue <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Um, where are you getting this from? I looked at the thread in which this issue came up, and I didn't see anyone dismissing it, or ignoring it, or saying be quiet. Charles is looking into it, what more do you want? Fanfare? A big banner? ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super. [This message has been edited by Chupacabra (edited 09-03-2000).]
  13. Okay, since I seem to be drawing some fire for a comment I thought pretty innocuous, I'll be more clear. Be honest, how often are you going to notice moving roadwheels, or wisps of smoke rising out of craters? I personally think I'd look at them once or twice, go "ooh, ah," and then go back to playing the game. My point was that I believe they'd add very little to the overall looks of the game. However, I believe that making infantry look less blocky and lego man-like would be a huge increase in the overall looks of the game. My use of the word "niggly" was not intended as an insult, and I'm not really sure how it was taken as such. If I thought that your ideas were stupid, I'd probably say that I thought they were stupid. Moving wheels or smoking craters are not stupid ideas per se, and in fact I'd love to see them in the game at some point. However, it is my opinion that improvements such as these are not very important, and should be back burner sorts of things. If people are going to be insulted by posts like that one I wrote, I might as well give up. I really don't get where y'all are coming from on this one. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super. [This message has been edited by Chupacabra (edited 09-03-2000).]
  14. I'd much rather see improvements like a larger polygon count for infantry units or more terrain tiles than really niggly eye-candy like smoking craters or moving wheels. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
  15. The "gassing" incident is also not the first questionable remark he's made. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
  16. It's my understanding that weapon data are hard-coded into the executable. So, I don't think what you're asking is possible. You could change the appearance or sounds of the squad members, but they'd still be shooting Garands and Mausers at each other. Bear in mind that I'm not a programmer, and I could very well be wrong ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super. 17. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Los: And whoever thinks Vietnam wouldn't make for interesting battles because there werent very many bn level actions or the CM engine is not suited is woefully lacking in an understanding of history, combat and CM. Los <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Gee, thanks very much. I see now that I am a complete idiot, with no understanding of any of these three. My professors will be so ashamed. Excuse me while I go burn my degree. Moreover, I will never again state my opinion on this forum, for fear that I will demonstrate my own inate stupidity and sully the entire CM community. If I'm wrong about something, I'd like to be told, and I'm often wrong about many things. But you really don't have to be a jerk about it. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super. 18. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Gunslinger: >I'm going to University in two weeks and I >think there is nothing more noble than hard >work for reward. You better hit the English books then. It should be: I'm going to a University And "there is nothing more" is a double negative. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> First: Going to University is correct. It's not a common usage in American English, but it is correct. Second: It's not a double negative. A double negative would be something like "There ain't nothing more." ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
  19. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Jager 7: By the way....the term "graze burst" means it detonates on the ground. Out here.... <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Er, are you sure? Everything I've ever read on artillery (which is admittedly limited) led me to believe that a graze burst was a shell which detonated upon grazing something light, like wire or a tree, hence the term. This is obviously not a burning issue, but I'm curious ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
  20. Depends on how the fuse is set on the shell, I'd imagine. By the end of WW1 artillerists had figured out how to set fuses to explode on "graze" against razor wire. I'd think a tree would offer at least that much resistance to a falling shell. Don't take this for the official grog's answer, though ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
  21. I don't think the CM engine would be suited to simulating combat in Vietnam. Straight-up battles of the type CM simulates were fairly rare. In fact, Hue and some of the other Tet battles are the only full-scale military engagements I can think of. Mmm, maybe Khe Sahn. There were a lot of patrols, and a lot of ambushes, but very few battalion-sized battles. Also, to be honest, I'm not sure a game based on Vietnam-era combat would be much fun. Just my opinion, of course. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
  22. You're all missing the joys of very, very cheap liquor. A good ground rule is, if it comes in a plastic bottle, good. If it comes in a plastic bottle with a handle, even better. If it comes in a plastic bottle with a handle and an easy-pour spout, you've got yourself a winner. However, I will make some specific recomendations: Vodkas: Ivan the Terrible Mr. Popov's Kamchatka All of these are pretty close to being straight ethyl. Da, Gospodin! Gin: Canadian Club Seagrams. Not Seagram's 7, which unfortunately doesn't come in plastic bottles, but the stuff they keep behind the Seagram's 7. You need a looooot of tonic with these bad boys. Don't even think about using these for martinis. Speaking of martinis, straight vermouth makes a nice after-dinner pick-me-up. Tequila: Really the only choice here is Montezuma. Warning!!! Do NOT attempt to substitute sugar for salt, no matter how phenomenally hammered you are. You will regret it! Trust me on this one. And, my personal favorite, Whiskey/Bourbon Old Crow Rebel Yell Jim Beam Southern Lady (No, not Southern Comfort. Southern Comfort only comes in glass bottles, with no handle) Break out your hip flask and fillerup! Any of these will get you sloshed very, very quickly, and seeing who can take shots of this stuff without wincing is a fun party game. The whiskeys are also perfect for boilermakers. Ideally, boilermakers should be made with a nice light beer, like Busch, Genny Cream Ale, Meisterbrau, or Old Milwaukee. Any of these fine spirits are guaranteed to leave you with an incredibly massive hangover, which will provide a convenient justification to skip your early classes or be late for work. Come on, you know you want to anyway. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
