Building Destruction damage to units.
Chupacabra replied to Mother Theresa's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
It's an abstraction. Would you feel better if the squad was wiped out by the tank shell instead of by having a building dropped on it? And yeah, putting infantry in buildings which can be fired upon by direct HE is a bad idea. If you're sticking your troops up there for every freaking gun in France to shoot at, may I suggest that you try something different? Like, say, the second row of buildings? ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super. -
How did you guys first hear of CM?

Even if you're on the bottom floor, would you like to have several tons of bricks, beams, or plaster dumped on you? Doubt I would, and I'm a masochist. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super. -

Do a search on 'rosters'. This has been talked to death. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super. -
Beaten to the punch -- Yeah, sounds like a Gammon bomb. They work well against tanks, I've found, but of course you have to get close enough to use them. Never seen them used in the satchel charge role. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.

The Pershings were, AFAIK, developed specifically to destroy the German heavies. So it doesn't really seem too surprising that they do When you say "It seems the Tiger and the late Tiger should be a lot tougher," are you basing that on actual historical data, or on the "Tigers are cool" factor? snipers or sharpshooters in CM2?
Chupacabra replied to Waxx_IK's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Like David said, I think the question isn't whether snipers played a part in the war, but whether their part would fit into the time scale of an average CM battle. Your average sniper would take a few hours to find a suitable hidey hole, take another few hours to wait for a suitable target, take the shot, and then move. Having never been a sniper, I'll admit that my knowledge of this subject comes completely from second-hand sources and may be hearsay, but I can't picture this being much fun to simulate. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super. -
Vasiliy Zaitsev & Heinz Thorwald (sp?)
Chupacabra replied to mg's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Check both Anthony Beevor's 'Stalingrad' and John Keegan's 'World War Two.' Neither has a lot of information on Zaitsev per se, but both devote a few pages to the Soviet concept of 'sniperism.' As for Thorvald, I'm not sure if he actually existed. I think he may have been an invention of 'The War of the Rats' author. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super. -

quote:
Originally posted by Slapdragon: Gamey means that stupid actions will not effect you in the frame of the game

Eh? I've heard a lot of definitions of 'gameyness,' and that's the first time I've heard that one. Hell, I've made lots of stupid decisions that don't effect me in the frame of the game. I guess that time I forgot that I'd bought artillery spotters was gamey, then. Ditto the time I parked a platoon of Shermans smack on top of a big hill. Neither action affected the end result of the game in either way, but both were stupid decisions.
quote:
And yes, US commanders tried very hard to keep towns rather than let their men freeze, even to the point of not shelling the towns if possible. The US has always been concerned with soldier comfort -- an oddity but a long running thread in almost every history you read.

Tell that to the folks in Aachen. Soldier comfort is fine, but I doubt that American commanders were much worried about it when they wanted to shell the living piss out of a town. Also, consider Frost's paras in Arnhem, who, AFAIK, did use flamethrowers to deny houses to German troops.
quote:
I should add: would you light the trees around the foxholes of your men on fire? Troops are scared by flame, and it would, in real life, be a bad idea to light the very building they are defending on fire.

I don't think anyone is suggesting burning up houses which are currently being occupied by friendly soldiers. But setting something on fire is a pretty good way of denying it to the enemy, no? Sorry, but I don't see this as gameyness at all. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.

Get a ratty little dog, too. The resident beggar in Blackfriars Station, which I have to walk through every day, has this nappy looking terrier - the kind English ladies keep as lapdogs, but nastier - and he gets the most amazing handouts I've ever seen. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.

Ideas for CM patch or update- enhancements!
Chupacabra replied to Burnin' Ern's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
About the first two issues, these have both been discussed heavily. You'll find your answers and a whole lot of pro and con wrangling if you perform searches on 'roster' and, er, dunno, probably 'squad representation' or something like that. As for the rest- I don't really have an opinion on the ambush thing, might be nice but not a high priority change imho. Ditto the defensive arcs thing. AFAIK the type of extensive trench systems you seem to be asking for didn't really exist on the Western Front. Dollars to donuts there'll be trenches in CM2, though. I'd disagree about the recovering vehicles thing. It's already modeled abstractly in operations, which I think works nicely, and I don't think that the limited time frame of battles would allow recovery of seriously damaged/immobilized tank. Maybe some of the tankers can correct me, but I'd imagine that replacing a tread or an engine would take quite a bit longer than the time alotted to most CM battles. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super. -
Er, don't quote me, and certainly don't take this as the official answer, but I think that the reasoning was, 'well, we've got to represent houses falling down somehow, and we've got this nifty explosion to use, so...' I know I've heard that explanation somewhere before, but when and from whom I have no idea.

Panthers vs. Tigers?

Please recall that when you purchased CM, you were told that TCP/IP support would be included when it's ready. As BTS has stuck to their end of the bargain (ie, TCP/IP support is not ready, so it is not yet in the game), there's really nothing to complain about, is there? ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
