1. I've used crews to shore up a weak defense (using circular logic, my defense HAS to be pretty weak if I have enough crews to shore up a weak defense) and I wouldn't have a problem with an PBEM opponent doing the same, but I'd be bugged if someone used crews in any sort of planned offense. Dunno, it would just bug me. Against the AI, hell, do whatever you like. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 2. Poor Andreas. It must be difficult going through life with such a glaring and unfortunate lack of a grade school education. I mean, really. Hague. Feh! Appleton's work has been described as "magisterial" and "the definitive flame war reference" by such eminent historians as Marlin Goldenfish and Greg Birdstuff. Surely you're not prepared to besmirch the venerable Professor Birdstuff? ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 3. It's a French word originally, meaning rifleman. If you're asking if there's a difference in game terms, off the top of my head I don't know.
 4.
quote:
Originally posted by Germanboy: Flamewars were actually outlawed in the first Hague Convention (97th replacement protocol, unfortunately not ratified by the US Senate and therefore useless). So there.

Pfft! Clearly the ordnance at hand is the 1934 Tijuana Accord, which, while it outlawed flame "wars" per se, allowed for the occurance of flame "police actions," a loophole which has since been interpreted by international military tribunals to permit all sorts of de facto flame conflicts. This information is covered in Crabby Appleton's excellent 1946 book " On the Origin of Flame Wars ." I suggest you read it before you make yourself out to be an even bigger Guppy than you are. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super. 5. Another thing CM doesn't note is that in several towns where Volksturm units were garrisoned, townspeople confiscated the soldiers' Panzerschreck bombs and grenades for fear that they'd blow up the town by mistake (from Ian Kershaw, The Hitler Myth , Oxford University Press, 1989). I for one think that this is an egregious oversight on BTS' part and should be remedied immediately! ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super. 6. Germanboy, your failure to understand the importance of flame wars shows your obvious...um...ignorance of the grand history of ill-considered statements! Why, um, in 1778 King George III turned to his Minister of Sewage and proclaimed "Thine opinion on Foul Open Sewers is that of a Three Year Old, thou perfumed French Whore!" Whereupon the Minister of Sewage replied "Thou art a Great Whopping Arsehole, and have clearly missed my Point." So you see, flames have a long history and should be respected as such. Yep. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.

 9.
quote:
Originally posted by BasilD: I was thinking about cavalry and I would imagine the horses would have to be modeled as seperate transport units, since one usually didnt fight from horseback tho I imagine you COULD do so at a penalty, not to mention it wouldn't be too clever if under return fire.

The Russians did mount some attacks on horseback. How common these were, I'm not sure, nor am I sure if they were continued after a certain time frame. I'd imagine that sooner or later cavalry charges became too costly even for Soviet commanders. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 10.
quote:
- graphics, CC is much nicer looking

I disagree, although that's a matter of personal choice. CC has the advantage of painted maps, but CM's 3D engine blows CC's graphics all to hell, IMO.
quote:
- real time... this is debatable as the detail of CMBO would be hard to be effective with in real time, however real time is a lot of fun

I don't think this is even an option for CM. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super. 11. I played all 4 CC games heavily, and now can't really see going back. If CC5 is relatively inexpensive I might pick it up, but it's not a priority buy. CC's engine was good in its time, but compared to CM, it doesn't feel right. And of course, CM blows CC away in the realism department. Before CC, I was interested in WW2, but not in wargames per se, and CC (2 especially)more than anything else proved to me that wargames (whether or not you consider CC a "real" wargame is another matter) didn't have to be clunky tabletop things with reams of statistics. CC got me into wargames, and for that, I'll always be fond of the series, but in terms of what I'll play in the future, it doesn't hold anything for me. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 12. This thread reminds me of the grid discussion. The issues were largely the same: the pro side argued that it would speed up gameplay, the con side argued that it would change the way the game is played. I didn't see a definitive answer to that question, and I don't foresee one coming here. Arguing about it isn't going to make a difference. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 13. This has come up a number of times. While I agree that the Axis bases can be hard to spot, IMO this isn't a high-priority fix. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 14. Why not just stick an arty spotter on a jeep or HT? Wouldn't this be basically what you're looking for? ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super. [This message has been edited by Chupacabra (edited 08-08-2000).]
 15. It'd be great if they implemented dogs with mines strapped to their backs Probably not very useful in the context of a single battle, but it'd be pretty damn funny to watch the first couple of times. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 16. I'll amend my earlier post- If it could be easily added as a toggleable feature, sure, why not. I just personally don't like clutter. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 17. I'd say no. I don't really like stuff cluttering up my screen. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 18.
quote:
Originally posted by Olle Petersson: More like AMRAAM vs BF-109 ... In a dogfight the outcome would be pretty random, since the BF-109 has superior turning radius and slow flying characteristics, and enough firepower to blow up the F-16. Cheers Olle

In WW2-era dogfights, speed was life. Which is why lighter, more maneuverable, but slow Japanese planes got knocked out of the sky like gnats once the American pilots figured out that they shouldn't try to turn with them. The Me-262 wallowed around like a quadraplegic sow compared to planes like the Mustang or Thunderbolt, but it was nearly 100 mph faster than anything else in the sky, which made it dangerous. Basically, this is all a long-winded way of saying that having a tight turning radius is nice, but faster will win almost every time. Of course, guided missiles have leveled the playing field a bit... ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 19. Played a small QB last night, making things as random as possible. Wound up with a foggy night battle with me playing Volkssturm against Free French. Both sides were green (although I guess mine were greener). The amount of friendly fire due to misidentification was pretty funny ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 20.
quote:
Originally posted by windstarz: Has anyone seen the infomercial on Asseenontv.com. 700 mhz , 30meg HD, and lots of accessories for $999 with the rebates. Any opinion on this setup?

Uh, I assume that's supposed to be a 30 gig HD? Personally I'm a little skeptical of computers that claim high performance for that kind of money. Quite a few computer manufacturers save money by either using cheap components, or by severely limiting the computer's upgradability, or both. I don't know the specific model you're talking about, but I'd be careful. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 21. No offense, but if you want a game that looks like CC, go play CC. All of CC's maps were drawn by Atomic's artists, as opposed to being built with a set of building tools. I suspect if CC ever went fully 3D the way CM is, it wouldn't have any of that eye candy you speak of. Better graphics would be fine, but I think if you're expecting exact, spot-on representations of every location in Europe, you're likely to be disappointed a lot. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 22. I was playing around with the editor last night, and one of the things I tried to do was a fairly narrow but very deep canyon crossed by a bridge. However, the canyon was wider than one tile, and instead of crossing the gap, the bridge sat down on the bottom. Is there any way I can get the bridge to span the gap rather than plopping down in the middle of it? ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 23. Dragoon - My point is, and by all means feel free to disagree that MBTs are much more expensive by far than the missiles used to kill them. Example - During the Gulf War, the USAF spent a fair amount of time going "tank plinking." Send up a plane, tell it to loiter over the battlefield, and if it sees an enemy tank, shoot it. It was simple, and it was cost effective. As far as I'm told, the next generation of missiles are going to be able to perform the tank plinking missions that the fighters carried out in the Gulf. That is, the missiles will be launched, they will be able to loiter over a battlefield for a certain length of time, and they will be smart enough to recognize and defeat enemy armor. Even if these next generation missiles are a million bucks a pop, that's still cheaper than an MBT. I don't doubt that tanks have a place on the battlefield, but it's my guess, and if I'm wrong I'm wrong, that the future will tend more towards infantry and light AFVs like the Bradley.
 24. Robo- Ambush markers are unit-specific. There should be a bright orange line running from an ambush market to the unit that set the marker. As far as I know, there's no way to have a unit use another unit's ambush marker. You'd have to use two overlapping markers. Are you maybe thinking of Target Reference Points? The symbol for TRPs is quite a bit like ambush markers, and those can be targeted by multiple units. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
 25. No offense, but I think this is a subject best left alone. Everyone has their own opinion, nobody's opinion is going to change as a result of what gets posted, so why bring it up? This is just going to turn into a flame war. And in case you're wondering, no, I don't support piracy or pirates.
