1. I don't see MEs as particularly gamey, actually. Unless for some reason the map is just completely devoid of any sort of cover outside of the town, I often find it better to hang back a bit and see what the other guy does before comitting my troops. It's been pointed out (possibly in the manual) that MEs were the rarest type of engagements to take place in the war, so to be perfectly historical, you probably shouldn't be playing MEs anyway. I like 'em because they're the only type of fight where neither side starts with an advantage. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.

3.
quote:
Originally posted by Fox: Indeed the AI does have advantages Chupacabra..the AI in say, Shermans, when spotted by the enemy (us), has the ability to fire shots, launch smoke and retreat. U can't tell me that the AI just happened to guess when i was gonna come outta the woods and luckily launched some smoke..

This exact issue has come up before. Charles has stated that the AI HAS ABSOLUTELY NO ADVANTAGES OVER A HUMAN PLAYER. Personally, I've seen Shermans under my control behave exactly as you describe. Usually they were veteran or better. So unless you have some conclusive proof that in fact the designer of the game is wrong and the AI does cheat, let it go. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.

5. Funny, I'm running CM on a Dell Inspiron 3700. Celeron 433 processor, same video card, very similar system in general. Runs beautfully in 1024x768. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.

Second, what does voting for Al Gore have to do with any of this? ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
7. I'm now completely unable to open pbem files at all. Old files from games I've already completed now freeze my computer. I've tried downloading files via AOL and Hotmail, both zipped and unzipped, and nothing's working. Could this be a problem with either my computer or my copy of CM? It seems increasingly unlikely that the files are getting corrupted since, as I've said, I'm now unable to load files that I've previously played. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
8. AI doesn't get any advantages over human players. None. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
9. Dr. Brian - I'm not really interested in rehashing the arguments of your previous posts, so I'm going to try to avoid them as much as possible. However, I may bring up specific points you've made to illustrate my own. First - Strong opinions are fine. I have lots of 'em. But you need to realize that this is an international forum. As many of the German players here have noted, when you say that all Germans from 1933-1945 were pure evil, no ifs, ands or buts, you're talking smack about people's grandaddies. I assume you'd be miffed if someone did the same to you. Second - it absolutely is simplistic to assert that - as I believe you have - all Germans supported the Nazis and were therefore evil. I note that you've never said what your doctorate's in, but I'll slang a little bit of academic bull atcha now. BA and MA in history, principally German, if you're interested. Without writing an article here: yes, many Germans either explicitly or implicitly supported Nazism. However, many Germans either explicitly or implicitly rejected and fought against it as well. Hitler had several assassination attempts made against him, both before and after 1933. The General's plot is the best known of course, but is by no means the only. That these attempts failed speaks more to Hitler's paranoia than to any lack of trying on the would-be assassin's parts. That these attempts were made at all, given that failure meant (for sure) death, (most likely) torture, (and quite probably) the torture and deaths of family and associates as well, speaks to the enormous courage of the people making the attempts. Also - the German Army was NOT a volunteer army. Conscription was the rule. Even the SS was using conscript soldiers by the end of the war. Ignoring for a moment duty, nationalism, the desire to not be thought of as a coward, and all of that stuff, picture this: you're sitting at home drinking your beer and listening to your Volksemfaenger, when *knock knock*, "Oh look, dear, it's the Gestapo. They say you have to report for the army tomorrow or they'll kill all of us." Simple choice, really. Towards the end of the war, with Germany's adult male population mostly either dead or fighting, units of the HJ took military and civic control in many German towns. Again, simple choice. Either join the Volkssturm, or you get killed, and to make things worse, you'd get killed by a bunch of pimply 13-year olds with guns bigger than they were. Not my idea of fun. Finally - I believe that part of the problem is that every time you make an apology, you go on to qualify it. No one is asking you to apologize for being anti-Nazi. I guarantee, there is no one here who is pro-Nazi. If there was, I wouldn't be here. I've studied Nazis for most of my adult life, and believe me, I hate them worse than the plague. I do not, however, hate Germans. And I do not make blanket statements about such a complex and emotionally charged subject. Edited for spelling and grammar. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super. 10. Going back to the original point - I don't think you can make comparisons between two such radically different events. As you yourself point out, the differences are much greater than the similarities. To me, it's like saying that the First Punic War and World War One are similar because Romans fought in both. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
11. So Crumply, what's your rationalization? I guess if I'm a war-loving sociopath for playing a computer game, that makes you one too. Hell, I used to play Sierra's Leisure Suit Larry games back in the day, so apparently I'm not only a warmonger, but I'm a balding, polyster-wearing lech. Sheesh. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.

YOU'RE GONNA HAVTA SPEAK UP! What does this say for those of us who work in nightclubs, I wonder? Besides that we're inherently super-cool and we get to meet lots of hipster musicians. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super. 14. Another thing to keep in mind is that many wargamers tend to have older systems. Similarly, many people, including me, don't have the money to upgrade fequently. I get the best computer I can buy with the money I've got, but that's not close to state of the art. Of course the technical requirements for CM2 should be higher. But if future CM games turn out to be real beasts, I'm afraid that I, and quite a few others, would be unable to keep up. Food for thought. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
15. I'd originally posted this to the general board since it gets more traffic, but I'll repost it here... Fairly often, loading PBEM files hangs my computer. I'll enter my password and then...nothing. The mouse still works, but the HD isn't spinning. I can't ESC, alt-tab, or ctrl-alt-del out of the password screen. Eventually I just have to restart my computer. A couple of tech specifics - It's a PII 266, 64 mb ram, Riva 128 AGP, SB Live, MS Intellimouse. All drivers are up to date. I'm receiving my PBEM files as attachments via AOL. The funny thing is, I'm pretty sure the problem isn't that the files are being corrupted in transit. The first few times this happened, I was able to fix the problem by uninstalling and reinstalling CM. However, this doesn't work anymore. Also, I don't think it's a driver issue, as the game runs like an absolute champ when I'm playing the AI. No lockups, barely any slowdown, no jitters, nothing. I only have this problem when I'm loading PBEM files. Does anyone have any ideas? This is getting seriously frustrating for me, and no doubt for my opponents as well. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.

17. I think that part of the apparent superiority of the Stuart is that CM models engagements on a scale small enough that the Stuart's good points really shine; ie speed, maneuverability. I sure as hell wouldn't want to go toe-to-toe with a Tiger at 2km in one, though. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
18. Oh, btw, PeterNZer - The Lusitania was sunk in 1916 The Americans entered WWII after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941. Germany declared war two days later. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
19. This is ridiculous. I've spent a pretty fair chunk of my adult life studying Nazism. I have a couple of pieces of paper which say I'm fairly knowledgable about it. And in every discussion I've ever had about Nazism, this happens sooner or later. People start screaming at each other, and eventually it gets personal. This is such an emotionally charged topic that any such discussion is bound to degrade into a slanging match. I note with some dismay that that's exactly what happened here. YOU ARE DOING NO GOOD BY CONTINUING THIS FIGHT. No one is about to change their views on this. Just drop it. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
20. I've had this problem, to greater or lesser degrees with all of my opponents. It may well be AOL. Yet another reason to hate the silly thing. Luckily, I'll shortly be moving back to the land of university T1 lines... Thanks for the response, Kwazy. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super. 21. Oh, and one quick question: Nothing was mentioned in the readme about PBEM incompatibility between 1.04 and 1.05. Is it therefore safe to upgrade mid-game? ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
22. Wow, speedy. And might I tender a hearty 'right on'? I know you guys hear this a lot, but thanks. It's really nice to see a software company do things right. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super. 23. This has happened enough times to be seriously annoying, and I have no idea what's causing it, so I thought I'd see if anyone here has any idea. Fairly often, when I load a PBEM turn, immediately after I enter my password, my computer hangs. Usually I've been able to fix the problem by reinstalling CM, however, lately that's stopped working as well. CM runs beautifully normally, it's just when I'm loading PBEM turns that it gets funky. Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions/voodoo cures? Oh, incidentally, stupid me, I tried to do a search on *pet head, rub tummy* "PBEM" before posting this. My ISP timed me out before the search completed. ------------------ Soy super bien, soy super super bien, soy bien bien super bien bien bien super super.
