  1. Plus, a couple of guys could be runners. One would definately be humpin the radio. ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
  2. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Ellros: As for "A Bridge A Too Far", I'd love to know where they got the numbers of Shermans they used for 30 Corp. (As a side note, the destroyed tanks they bulldoze off the road bear no resemblance to Shermans. Guess they didn't want to destroy any of the rare tanks).<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> I remember watching the "Making of" a BTF in the late 70s on HBO. If I recall correctly, they actually made vehicles for that film. That and the huge cast must have pushed it way over budget. ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
  3. Also have a Voodoo 3, 2000 pci. Works great even on my p266mhz with 94m RAM. ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
  4. I had a mouse problem but it was because I was using a custom mouse cursor. After I switched back to the windows default, it worked fine. Some video problems I had were solved by downloading the latest drivers. ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
  5. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by IRONSIDES: I have a voodoo3 2000PCI, will the full version give me problems? <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> I have a Voodoo 3 2000pci. Had some problems with full smoke effects until I d/l the latest voodoo drivers--problem solved--great game..Even on my lowly P266mhz with 94m RAM the game is awesome. ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
  6. Yeah, this one definately makes the "worst war movie of all times" top ten list easily. ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
  7. Man, you are screwed. But, I love it. God help me I do love it so. ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
  8. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by hakujin: We may have crappy beer but we make a pretty good computer game and it only costs half what it would cost in your country. That's a trade off I can live with. PS Beer's inexpensive here too.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> And we have plenty of beer choices here, too. Personally, I don't drink Bud. But, I love Old Peculiar, Spaten Viesen, Fosters, McKewens (sp?) and others. Pretty international huh? For an American. ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
  9. I'll throw in a couple more from the Allied side: "Paratrooper" by Devlin--definative study of US Airborne troops. "On to Berlin"-by "Jumpin Jim" Gavin himself. "Eisenhower's Lieutenants" by Russell Weigley-- this is an in depth study of 44 and 45 from the allied side, somewhat dry but very good. "There's a War to Be Won"--by Geoffrey Perret-- another excellent book about the US Army. I second Doubler's book "Closing with the Enemy" , in fact I'm reading it now. Also second "Company Commander" by Macdonald Read it 3 times. "Brazen Chariots" by Robert Crisp is very good-about British Armour in N. Africa. Many of these are hard to find/out of print but well worth it. I found some online through second hand stores. Enjoy. ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
  10. Panzer commander and Panzer Battles are very good. I know you've got a lot of reading ahead, but sometime you should also try "Steel Inferno" or anything by Michael Reynolds. Enjoy your reads.... ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
  11. One other thing you forgot to mention that you DO get--the best tactical wargame going--period. I'll bet many of the non-US folks that play (and live) this game would easily pay double the cost. I know I would, but then again, I'm U.S. I don't worry about a CD box--it hasn't left my computer's drive since I got it. ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
  12. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Kingfish: I may be wrong on this, but I always thought the 6th ss Pz army wasn't anywhere near Bastonge during the battle of the bulge. All the stories I've read put them in the Elsenborn-Stavelot-Manhay area. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> You are correct sir. The 5th Panzer Army had the Bastogne area. Hasso von Mantueffel (sp)commanding. Ambrose makes this same error in "Band of Brothers". On one of the photo captions. ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
  13. Here's a couple: World War II Order of Battle by Shelby Stanton. Excellent source on the US Army. Covers all divisons and regiments. Breaks down divisions through battalions. Covers, inf, armor, engineers, AT , everything. Maybe out of print, I got it online. See if Hooked on History as it. histor1@attglobal.net. Mine is the 1984 edition. Battle of the Bulge by Danny Parker. Excellent work on all forces involved. B&N has it in their stores in a softback version now--well worth it. US Army Handbook by George Forty. Pretty good material here, too. Hope this helps.. ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
  14. Usually play the Allies, although I like the Germans too. Just that most of my current opponents like the Germans more I guess. ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
  15. You will definately find a variety of officer quality in any unit. You can also assume that great officers were sometimes sent to not-so-great outfits to (hopefully) inspire them. I was in the 82nd and we had plenty of dud officers (and privates and NCOs, etc.) I had one West Pointer who would have had negative attributes and one Rotsy (ROTC) who would have had a good many pluses. Just my opinion, of course, I never saw combat. Once the lead flies, you never know who's gonna shine and who's gonna break.....Just my .02. ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
  16. Reading Doubler's "Closing with the Enemy" right now (excellent). During one battle (around Metz) I think, the US used British Crocodiles to assist in reducing a position. Said that the Sherman flame was not used in Europe in great numbers although portable FF units were more prevalent. This would probably be a great scenario (if not already out there.) Edit: Don't forget about Market-Garden where the 82nd Abn fought with British Armor at Nijmegan. ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet [This message has been edited by Airborne (edited 09-11-2000).]
  17. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by IntelWeenie: As for them being amphibious landing specialists, yes, that's mainly what they did, but there were several Army divisions that did that job just as well. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> And, actually, the US Army made more amph assaults than the USMC. Plus, the doctrines were different. The Marines would typically assault an island and engage in fierce combat for relatively short periods of time. Then they would be withdrawn for sometimes up to a year to refit, and retrain. The US Army infantry divisions were not afforded this time off. Many were kept in combat continuously. Of course, both suffered heavy losses and the Army replacement system was pathetic.. ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
  18. Sorry about that, Reaper. Well, not really. That's what you get for spending the points on a Jag. (I thought it was a Tiger). Wasn't that TOT barrage a thing of beauty, though. Hint: 2 batteries dead on the money... ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
  19. I agree that it would be pretty neat eye-candy to see tracks. Also, dust from vehicles and lingering smoke from heavy weapons fire would be good.. However, the game is great the way it is...... ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
  20. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Jeff Heidman: Can someone tell me who I should enlist with if I want to fly one of the black UN helicopters that are insidiously taking over America? Jeff Heidman<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> I think the "Black" helicopters are still OD green, they just happened to look that way at night. I also think they are part of the US Special Ops forces training for real world operations in urban environments. These folks trained in my hometown a couple of years ago and caused quite a stir from paranoid, misinformed citizens who had no clue..I say the more (realistic) training these guys can get, the better. And MJ, I pretty much went down the same road as you. DEP 6 months prior to graduation. Went in at 17 , combat arms. I wanted and got specific things: 11H (TOW) crewman, 82nd Airborne, Ft Bragg, NC. Although, its true, there was not much of a call for anti-tank infantryman in civilian life, it certainly prepared me for college--and I sure grew up alot. I don't regret serving in combat arms at all. After jump school, I got to my unit to find out that the battalion I supported (1/505) had deployed to the Sinai for 6 months as part of a peacekeeping mission. You do have to put up with a lot of crap and may get stuck were you don't want to be..Make the best of it, and mostly, good luck..Thanks for answering the call.. ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
  21. Welcome aboard, enjoy the ride...... ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
  22. Yes, liked it a lot.. Been a while, though. ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
  23. I'm with you, then. Right.....Charge!!!! ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
  24. A real world experience: My unit was having desert training at Ft. Huachuca (sp) Arizona. I was in an AT company (TOW Abn) and we were training in the same area as some M-60A3s. Somehow or another, the brush caught on fire and we were task at putting it out. We weren't really making any headway with shovels when the armor came to our support. One of the M-60s drove into the middle of the fire and after a couple of 360s -poof, no more fire.. As I recall, this was maybe knee-high grass/brush. OTOH, these treadheads were Nat'l Guard troops ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
  25. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Teamski: That's what I thought Seal Team from EA was for. Very suspenseful at times.... ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
