1.
quote:
Originally posted by Spook: For example, in one of the footnotes: 25. See Peter Shrijvers, The Crash of Ruin, pg. 67; Joseph Balkoski, Beyond the Beachhead, pg. 95. A standard German company was allotted 12 mortars. EACH German infantry company had twelve (81mm?) mortars as a standard allotment in '44? HHMMMMMMM. I'd agree on battalion-level, but on company level? Someone here got a TO&E handy to affirm one way or the other? [This message has been edited by Spook (edited 08-10-2000).]

I just finished Balkoski's book.. He is referring to a German Heavy Weapons company--not an infantry co.. He says that they typically had 4 120mm and 6 81mm mortars , but sometimes substituted in another 6 81mms instead of the 4 120s.. ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
2. SCUMBAG!!!! And PhD--c'mon, this a-hole is probably not out of grade school....... Now where'd I put that .50-cal with scope.. ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
3. Interesting post.. One of the first things I did after seeing the film (the first time) was to pull out my copy of Das Reich. I, too, didn't buy the attack by a division that was nowhere near the combat zone. I also admired but scrutinized the "Tiger" tanks. I thought that the P-51 scene was complete Hollywood bunk--very Spielbergish.... Finally, I wasn't quite convinced that 2 captains (Hanks and Danson) would have likely knew much about what the higher ups were accomplishing/not accomplishing...at that time.. just some thoughts..... ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
4. The same thing has happened to me. I don't remember making any changes that would have affected this. I have to change the preferences every time I log into the forum. Never had to do that before....Chris ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
5. Check out siteonsound.com. Rob has put together a pretty impressive list of books that folks here have recommended. YOu could also do a search. The 'books' topic has come up many times. As for Ambrose. I like him but am not crazy about him. Not one of my favorite WWII historians. I loved Undaunted Courage--Lewis and Clark. For small unit tactics I would recommend: Company Commander by Charles Macdonald Infantry Attack by Irwin Rommel The Devils Adjutant by Michael Reynolds There are sooo many others...... Hope this helps-------Chris ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
6. Hi Jammer--Welcome aboard. I don't know about making CM available for download, but I do know what a pain it is to wait for something this good. As far as the cost--it might be high but this is one game I had no problem shelling out fifty + bucks (american) for..... I've played too many games (computer and board) where I regret spending the money. Not with this one.. --------Chris ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
7.
quote:
Originally posted by Dragoon44: Airborne, Heh Heh sorry man, you paratrooper types are usually too smart to be a loader anyway,,,,hmmmm how about being a gunner?

Actually, I was. TOW ammo bearer, Assistant Gunner, GUNNER, and finally Squad leader and Section Leader (2squads)......Chris ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
8. From a former infantryman (11H2P)-offense taken Not really, just wanted to check out the smilies.......Chris ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
9. Just picked up Stalingrad at B&N--yes they do have it. What I found interesting is that they now have Danny Parker's book "Battle of the Bulge" in softback for around 25 dollars (US)..this is an excellent sourcebook for 'Bulge' afficionados (sp?). Also picked up a book about the 743 tank battalion called "A View from the Turret" by William Folkestad. --------Chris ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
10. You lucky SOB. I was in Germany 4 weeks in 82 courtesy of the US Army but didn't have the chance to tour like you are. I agree, though, the people and countryside are amazing.. enjoy...........Chris ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
11. This has been talked about quite a bit. Personally, I feel that it is 'gamey'. Vehicle crews should be preserved so they can be fitted out with a new vehicle--the job they are trained to do. I guess this is why the designers have updated crews to be less effective. Infantry crews--ie, AT and mortar crews were infantryman. So they should be able to fight. Vehicle crews, although probably bettered armed than just with pistols, should not be allowed to fight as infantry. Heck, they already cause enough heartache by drawing fire . "Hey, idiot! Engage the tank. The tank, stupid! Not that crew over there!!" ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
12. Barnes & Nobles has "Stalingrad" by Beevor--at least online. Great reviews. Looks like the latest -paperback- edition came out in April 99. --------Chris ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
13. I've been searching a while for this--yikes!, some of you guys have been around a long time. Anyhow; Wouldn't it be a nice feature to be able to see a line-of-sight from a map point?--not just from a unit. There are times when I would like to see what my tank/squad will be able to see when they get "around that building, or over that hilltop". You can now do it 'manually' by going to ground level. Would this be too 'gamey' (I hate that word). Any thoughts, comments. -------Chris ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
14. I couldn't open it either. Says "there is a temporary network error preventing the download". I have a PC using Netscape Navigator 4.08. -------Chris ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet

16. Immediately stop what your doing and order the game.. You won't regret it...... Chris ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
17. Yeah the "accordion effect" previously mentioned also applies to infantry grunts on road marches.. Unfortunately, it is a lot worse when you're walking, lugging a pack and rifle on a long road march.....Uh the good ole days.......Chris ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
18. Welcome to our world.... I too, immediately ordered the game after playing the demo... ------Chris ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
19. I don't think these games should even be compared to each other. Obviously, they span the same time period and are tactical but that's about it. I have CC1 and 2. I really tried to like them, but wasn't happy with the interface. I haven't played them in a long while, and now, I definately won't. CM blows them away......I love armour, but this game really lets you play infantry --as infantry were used. Just my thoughts---------Chris ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
20. I had to find the book online and order it. It's been so long I don't remember with whom. I remember there were a couple of copies, mine came in mint condition. Sorry I can't be more specific. Search for it and you will find it--highly recommended. Shelby Stanton also did Vietnam Order of Battle. By book (WWII) is isbn number: 0-88365-775-9 by Galahad Books As I recall there were a couple of versions: Mine is copywrited 1984 and is a large, hardback with a bright red cover. As for the AT rifles--I agree, I wouldn't want to lug those things. Never remember reading where they were actually used. -----Chris ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
21. Company Commander by Charles Macdonald Battle: The Story of the Bulge by John Toland Beyond the Beachhead: 29th ID in Normandy by Joseph Balkoski A Time for Trumpets by Charles Macdonald Eisenhower's Lieutenants by Russell Weigley- Very involved but a definative work on the allies in the West. Six Armies in Normandy by John Keegan Just some of my favorites. Chris ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet

25. Just my two cents. From "Panzergrenadiers in Action" squadron/signal Pubs.. " Panzergrenadiers were originally intended to fight from their vehicles. It soon became obvious that this would not be possible in most conditions, and the standard practice was to reach the best positon for an assault and then dismount and attack as infantry, with the vehicles providing fire support with machine guns, or light cannon, which were issued to platoon leaders' vehicles." I think you should be able to fire from a vehicle but at reduced firepower--esp when moving.. oh well, Chris ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
