  1. Hawkeye, Many have already made good points. No single unit type can single-handledly win a battle, not even today. Making them work well together takes a lot of understanding what they can do, what they do not (or its weakness). Planning, terrian condition, scenario objectives should be taken in account for. Take for example. I test-played a scenario (just to keep it anonymous to avoid possible spoiler) and tried both sides. One big VL is is located in a scattered tree zone. It was very natural for the defender to hide infantry in the area. The attacker had a 75mm FO. I had a platoon supported by an AFV + HMG. After 2 platoons of attackers were been driven off, the mortars started falling over the defender, the effect were minimal since I had the assets to fire at anything within LOS and the FO, id as generic infantry, was fired upon. When I played as the attacker, the defending side also placed a platoon in that area but I had 2 platoons shooting at it from two different directions with concentrated fire. And the FO directed mortar fire to that location. Most of the defender are either routed or wipped with one final charge of a platoon and losses to my side was light. This may be what they called "synchonization". Anyway, sorry for my long-winded post. Hawkeye, I think we can start a MIME (mechanized infantry meeting engagement) PBEM QB to test it out. Mind you, I may not be that good nor I am trying to be a tutor of any kind. but . I believe we can exchange our ideas better this way. I would try my best. 2. That would be good, Lorak. But I suppose if you make a game too large, there would be very steep for low-end computers to run. Bear in mind cause I can't help but imaging how grand it could be when I see hundreds of men and tens of tanks rumbling acrossing the field which shells of all calibres falling in front of them as fire curtains. Impressive! May be later. Griffin. ------------------ "When you find your PBEM opportents too hard to beat, there is always the AI." "Can't get enough Tank?" 3. Mike, *Sigh* I really appreciate if you don't say that in "public". (Below is the "behind-the-scene" of the Chinese sound mod) I have to suppress my voice during the recording for I am afriad my neighbours may think I am funny -- Hong Kong is a crowded place you know. My Putungwa is damn horrible. I am sure you can make CDIC ROFLAO if you send a copy to him (spare me!). I think I am able to fool most non-speakers. (End of behind-the-scene stuff) Can't wait to see your DFDR mod coming out. Oh, sorry, I would like to thank you for all the data files about DFDR some days ago. 4. Lorak, Most issues covered but Well, if you think deeper, there is simply no way to prevent moves from being changed, accidentally or deliberately. Let's say when a team has 2 members, member Alice sends her file to member Bob. There is not way to crosscheck if the moves made by Alice are the same ones send to the opposing team. Let imagine this case: a FO is targeting an area which helps Alice and when Bob wants the assets instead, Bob, receivng the move file after Alice, can change (or rip if you want to use the word) the targeting order without acknowledging Alice. This is raised to avoid unnecssary arguments and possible cheats. This is likely when the team gets large and the game is complex (i.e. a lot of fire and movements). I suggest you really need a refree or coordinator which handles ALL the file traffic and keeps all the file exchanges as a proof so such arguments can be minimized. Disclaminer: though I have NO interests in joining your game for the time being, cause I am quite busy. I wish to see such kind of game being play in a fair and fun. Good hunting people. 6. My history of playing CMBO all involves with nVida GeForce chips. Both GeForce DDR and GeForce 2GTS are very good for CMBO. Even though they are not exactly GeForce 2MX, I think they are close. 7. Rune, thanks for the hard work, your scenarioes are really "evil". Griffin. ------------------ "When you find your PBEM opportents too hard to beat, there is always the AI." "Can't get enough Tank?" Come to my Combat Missing Command Post (CMCP) at http://www.angelfire.com/games3/CMCP/
  8. Tiger, I know your frustration. The "Combat Mission Beyond Overload" syndrome is not a new incident here. One way to cure this is to try other games or do other things, put it aside for the moment. BTW, how about a game of PBEM? 9. Okay people, just when I though CM forum is getting quiet and boring, I am glad to see that the board is getting lively again. However, first off, I have no interested in joining the game right now. Also, it seems not no one has yet to address my issues posted. So please stop sending me e-mail about the game. I still read the thread and it is okay for me right now. Thank you very much. Griffin. ------------------ "When you find your PBEM opportents too hard to beat, there is always the AI." 10. Sounds very interesting Seahawk. However, I have the following issues: 1. How can the other member of the same team see the movie? 2. If the latter member of the team messed up the plots of the first member, is there a mechanism to avoid it? It could easily happend if there is no definite "phase line" between the two. 3. I think member dropping out is not a big problem so long as the other members are willing to "take up the job". It may sound a little unfair to the team with less member, just like playing soccer ball. 4. If the game is a QB, how do players pick the troops? Shopped by compter? 5. Would there be a moderator/coordinator/refree? Griffin. ------------------ "When you find your PBEM opportents too hard to beat, there is always the AI." "Can't get enough Tank?" 11. Not exactly a competitor to Rommel22, you may also be sending over to me also, and I am setting up a files section over my site next week. Also, it is a great help to everyone if you fill up the scenario database form too. Griffin. ------------------ "When you find your PBEM opportents too hard to beat, there is always the AI." 15. I was just trying to be humorous The MacOS 9 Finder is okay to me -- I am not a person who is used to Windows File Manager/Windows Explorer. I use "My Computer" most of the time. I think Steve Job is gambling here by creating an entire new engine under the hood. I would like to see a native CM series on OS X too. But from the philosphy of Steve & Charles Co., they are not likely to jump immediately into a new bandwagon, they have to cater for most of the (potential) customers out there. Griffin. P.S. Should I uninstall LinuxPPC on my PB when OS X comes? ------------------ "When you find your PBEM opportents too hard to beat, there is always the AI." "Can't get enough Tank?" 16. Personally, I hold a wait-n-see attitude towards OS X cuase the initial version lacks some nice features such as DVD support. I am waiting for subsequent incranations. Sure the micro kernel and unix-like architecture is very attractive -- call me a techno-geek. 18. Apache, I stand corrected. I have checked the Manual and that you can move your mortar units witin the "O" units to achieve indirect fire missions without LOS. This was different from the Gold Demo. Griffin. ------------------ "When you find your PBEM opportents too hard to beat, there is always the AI." "Can't get enough Tank?" 19. Hurricane, sorry but I am not entirely sure about your question, I still attempt a try... Normally, you don't spot enemy FO right away, unless your opfor does something funny letting the FO targets somewhere less than 100m before him so you can id the FO and the kind of gun he is directing. One way to know is about the sound of the incoming rounds: mortars/artillery and rockets sound very differently when they are in flight. Different calibur of rounds sounds and create diffent size of impact craters, you can give a good guess about what hits you. I suggest you may wish to set up deliberately differnet FOs using the scenario editor and observer how the rounds make. However, in larger points situation, your opfor may have more than 1 FOs or the opfor may deceive you with on-board artillery pieces. Remember "military never stops deceiving". 22. Hello Met, welcome aboard. The use of on-board mortars and FO are very different. On-board mortars can be used in 3 ways: 1. Direct fire. You need a clear, direct LOS to your target area. This unit can fire from almost any position, possible except within buildings. It is hard to get them into pos , especially in advnaces and meeting engagements. 2. Indirect fire. You can fire mortars without direct LOS. But there are 2 conditions: A. The motar must not move after the Setup Pnase. B. The mortar unit must be wihtin the command radius (red line) of a HQ unit (aka "0" unit). So long as the above 2 conditions are met, the mortars can drop on any targets within the LOS of the HQ unit and the HQ unit can move freely. 3. Target Marker. If you have purchase a Target Marker (or the scenario provides one), your mortar does not need LOS to the Marker, iirc, to fire. The accurracy and the time delay is shorter than Direct mode. It also works with the Indirect Fire mode as described above. For FO, the way to use is different. You can move your FO around, such unit can work independently or be attached to a "0" unit. No LOS is needed to target an area. When attached to a "0" unit with combat modifier, the accurracy and effectiveness of the OBA increases. The delay depends on the "experience level" of the unit, LOS, suppression level, whether it is attached and whether the unit is moved before or after target is set. It is an art to use artillery effectively. Play more and learn to use them. They are very powerful if used right. Hope it helps. 23. Shadow, thanks for the encouragement. The spelling mistake is going to fix within today. shame shame shame. I think I could use a spell checker. Michael and PL, I think a online database would be a great idea. But it is pretty difficult to show all the detailed information all in one page. A spread sheet is a pretty good media to present where the viewer can easily manipulate the way the scenarioes are shown. However, an online scenario/operation database would be a very challenging project for me. Still, the CMDB form is still the highest -- for my web site. 25. JPS, thanks for your comments. About the Axis force type, I don't have the game with me when I prepare the form --I was in office by the time and don't have the CD with me. I am going to fill them up later tonight. I am going to add the filename entry asap. I still want to hear more from all designers.
