Nice review. Gonna be published somewhere?

Oops, I stand corrected. ------------------ "Don't lie to me, Gustav! You're a stinkin' Mac user!"

If I'm not mistaken, v 1.02 was only released for the Gold Demo, not for the full game. The 1.03 patch will be for the full game. ------------------ "Don't lie to me, Gustav! You're a stinkin' Mac user!"

The graphics cannot model some of the squad facing one way, and some others, but in reality that is modeled. Because of the morale problems that half-squads face, I suspect that it is still better to keep the squad together. But you could try it and see...run several trials (10 or more) with the intact squad and the same number with split squads, and tell us what you find out. ------------------ "Don't lie to me, Gustav! I just wanted to say a public "Thanks" to Wild Bill Wilder. I brought a potential problem with the Elsdorf scenario to his attention, based on a PBEM I'm playing (the full thread is on the Scenarios forum, but be warned, it contains spoiler information). He not only acknowledged my post, but he did some testing, agreed that the problem should be fixed, and created a revised scenario. All on a Sunday afternoon when we both should have been spending time with our families. Now that's dedication. I'd recommend the revised scenario, which you can get from Wild Bill. I think it make for a fairer PBEM game. The scenario is otherwise great fun! ------------------ "Don't lie to me, Gustav! You're a stinkin' Mac user!"

Any Chance of a "Cover Art" Print?
Buckeye replied to Howitzer's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
I'd buy it, but would prefer a smaller size, more like a lithograph than a poster. Easier to frame and hang in the office! ------------------ "Don't lie to me, Gustav! You're a stinkin' Mac user!" -
Elsdorf concern...hey Wild Bill! (SPOILER)

Just more evidence of the dedication that CM brings out in its supporters! ------------------ "Don't lie to me, Gustav! You're a stinkin' Mac user!" -
It's the old Trojan half-track trick!! I'd go ahead and send the file to BTS. Sounds like the "Clown Car" bug, but could be a little different. ------------------ "Don't lie to me, Gustav! You're a stinkin' Mac user!"

Now that's what I call service with a smile! Thanks Bill. Too bad I (and Mike too) had to find out in a PBEM! Well, others will thank us... ------------------ "Don't lie to me, Gustav! You're a stinkin' Mac user!" -
I haven't seen a bridge yet, but based on comments that Charles has made about how LOS around buildings can cut through corners, I'd wonder if the same could happen through bridges. That would explain what you saw (i.e., the shot going through the bridge). The same can happen with buildings, and a bridge is treated the same way. ------------------ "Don't lie to me, Gustav! Hi Bill. I appreciate your response. I've really liked the scenarios of yours that I've played thus far, as well as the one's you've recommended. I just think it makes more sense to bring the reinforcements in further back. I don't mind coming under attack soon afterwards, but it'd be nice to have at least one move to play with... ------------------ "Don't lie to me, Gustav! You're a stinkin' Mac user!" -
I know that there are sound contacts. The odd things about this is that they rapidly flicker all over the board...just momentarily, often simultaneously in multiple locations. Like fireflies on steroids. Is that just part of FOW? ------------------ "Don't lie to me, Gustav! You're a stinkin' Mac user!"

Hope Wild Bill reads this, because I'd like his comments. I'm playing Elsdorf in a PBEM as the Axis. My reinforcements arrived on two consecutive turns, which is fine. The problem is that the second group (all Tigers) arrived on the right side of the map, forward of the town and actually slightly behind the Amis line. As a result, I was a sitting duck, and lost any chance of bringing those forces into play. They were destroyed in less than 10 seconds, by largely unseen forces...I assume Pershings that my opponent had waiting to bring forward. So, I wonder if the entry point of the reinforcements needs to be revised? Or was I just unlucky? Can the entry point vary from one playing to another? I seem to recall it can't, at least not by much. I really like this scenario. It's a challenge to defend as the Axis against such a large force. I was doing okay, but now I feel like I lost one of my main chances at winning because this happened. It doesn't seem realistic to me, and also isn't fair in the context of the game. Although forces arriving as reinforcements might walk into an ambush, I would never have sent all those Tigers forward at once...without overwatch they would be too vulnerable. Am I just being whiny? Wild Bill? Anyone else?? ------------------ "Don't lie to me, Gustav! You're a stinkin' Mac user!"

Thanks, Shugger. Maybe it's just supposed to happen that way. Does look strange, though. ------------------ "Don't lie to me, Gustav! You're a stinkin' Mac user!"

Bump.

What is your favourite scenario so far?
Buckeye replied to Epée's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Yup, I downloaded SPR last night and gave it a go. Great fun, especially if you liked the movie (rather than panning it for not being grognard-ly realistic). I managed to achieve a major victory without the help of the jabos...one zook took out the tigers, and one paratroop squad produced 38 casualties and 2 vehicle kills. Intense battle, just like the movie. But I wanted to see the Jabos!! -
I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this: In a couple PBEM games, using my Mac against PC users, I've seen an odd flickering of ATV sound contacts all over the board...this is differnt from what the game usually does, at least in my experience. And it's very distraction. Unless it's some odd manifestation of "Oh my God, they're everywhere!" But I don't think so. Has anyone else seen this? Charles? I use an iMac DV SE, with OS 9.0.4 and the backside cache disabled, and ver 1.01 of CM. Charles, if you're reading this, I can send you a file where I saw it. ------------------ "Don't lie to me, Gustav! You're a stinkin' Mac user!"

Sharpshooters as recon units -- Gamey or Not?
Buckeye replied to Hakko Ichiu's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
They're also handy on the defense. Get good LOS, and leave them to pick their own targets. They'll often pay you back with the SEAL mantra: One shot, one kill. ------------------ "Don't lie to me, Gustav! You're a stinkin' Mac user!" -
Anyone using flamethrowers consistently well?
Buckeye replied to Shooter's topic in Combat Mission - Tips and Tricks
Well, I can't claim too much expertise, but you need to do at least a couple things: First, don't bring him up to the front lines until you have a target in mind. When you do, he needs lots of buddies around him for support. Second, you need to lay down lots of suppressive fire before you try to bring him to bear on a target. Third, don't waste him on isolated squads, because he only has a few squirts. Go after buildings where troops are hiding/suppressed, pillboxes (from the flank and only when suppressed), and even AFVs (if you can catch them unaware, which isn't easy). Others will probably make additional suggestions. But with some good tactics and a little luck, you may get a chance to toast a few of the enemy. It's great fun to watch, but only if it's you doing the frying. ------------------ "Don't lie to me, Gustav! You're a stinkin' Mac user!" -

Spot him? Hell, most of my men (the few that are left) are cowering in fear from your damn tanks! My city has fallen victim to the SS scorched earth doctrine! ------------------ "Don't lie to me, Gustav! You're a stinkin' Mac user!" -
No, Pillar, you cannot use SPA/SPG for indirect fire or vertical fire. ------------------ "Don't lie to me, Gustav! You're a stinkin' Mac user!"

It's tough when the post has to be delivered via the African Queen. Don't worry, Bogie's on his way. ------------------ "Don't lie to me, Gustav! You're a stinkin' Mac user!"
