Dittohead replied to Triggerhappy's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
Nope, count me out on this one, I don't live anywhere near the Pacific ocean. Pacifist no need to pray for my forgiveness. -
Would the shatter gap save this tank?
-
I was reading a book on the 2nd AD and some tanker was talking about how he fired 4 rds from 200m at the side of a panther and did no damage. but the 5th one finally penetrated. Must have been shatter gap.

The last in service: Brazillian Stuarts

I recently acquired Squadron/Signal publications "US Tank Destroyers in Action" Armor Number 36. Its interesting to note that the UN captured a Serbian M-18 following the Dayton Peace accords. They even have a picture of it. It says Slobodon only drove it on Sundays to execute prisoners. Now thats a classic. Looks like all original equipment, except for flames painted on the fenders. The supporting infantry have Nokia Cell phones and call the tankers and let them know what direction the the AT teams are approaching. -
6 tungsten rounds in June for a Firefly?
Dittohead replied to Tiger's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
Don't know any more references on the availability of tungsten for the British. I'll keep looking. Maybe Rexford knows a few more. -
Range of the British 3 Inch Mortar
Dittohead replied to Kanonier Reichmann's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
WO 291/491 Notes on R & A trials of British 3-in and German 8cm mortars. This paper was published in 1943. Times of flight, on targets about 2600 yards away, are typically around 24 seconds. "It is safe to conclude that the difference in maximum range using top service charge is small." "It is safe to conclude that both German bombs are more accurate in range than our own, and that the m.d. in range of either German bomb is probably more than half the m.d. in range of our own." -
6 tungsten rounds in June for a Firefly?

Ellis et al, 1962 "Victory in the West, Volume I: The Battle of Normandy", Maj. L F Ellis with Capt G R G Allen, Lt-Col A E Warhurst and ACM Sir James Robb, HMSO, 1962 This is the first volume of the British official history of the NW Europe campaign. Elsewhere in the text it is stated that "a small quantity" of 6-pdr DS ammunition was available for the landings, and that "it was late in August before there was any for the 17-pdr Hogg, 1978 "British & American Artillery of World War 2", Ian V. Hogg, A&AP, 1978 In this book, Hogg states that 6pdr APDS was issued in June 1944, although in "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Ammunition", Apple Press, 1985, he says on p. 58 that it "appeared" in 1944, and on p. 151 that it was "first introduced for the 6-pdr" in 1943. Hogg, 1997 Source: "Tank Killers", Ian Hogg, Pan, 1997. Hogg gives the introduction dates for APDS as June 1944 for the 6-pdr and August 1944 for the 17-pdr, Hunnicut, 1978 "Sherman, A History of the American Medium Tank", R. P. Hunnicutt, Presidio Press, 1978, pages 559-570. Hunnicutt says "a few" 17 pdr APDS became available in Aug 44, but that the early rounds were "somewhat erratic", and less accurate than APCBC From Penetration Tables on: http://www.britwar.co.uk/salts/salt5.htm -
Can't always look at averages. In my example some AT guns had up to 5 rds! But the average was 2+. Not sure on the priority for tungsten in AT gun units. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Another item that is being overlooked is the availability of tungsten to US 76mm towed ATguns. I saw a thread the other day questioning if the AT gun shot tungsten as quickly as the tanks. Just did a quick sample of Aug 44, Sept and Oct 44.Using 9 guns. Aug - No tungsten Sept - anywhere from 5 to 0 rds. total 20 rds Oct. - same 5-0 rds but 23 total. It would seem odd that AT guns would have priority on the tungsten. But sounds like 5 rds would be excessive. I would think 1 max.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Under system properties Go into performance and try specifiying a max and min on your virtual memory. Try min max of 512 or something. I'm not exactly sure what the best range is, but I think it is multiples of your ram. And the other old standby is go to file system and set hard drive for use as a network server. Not sure if this speeds up the newer computers. [This message has been edited by Dittohead (edited 01-18-2001).]

Looks Good, you would think Sept. would be somewhat lean with supplies still catching up to the front lines. How about the British? -

From http://www.britwar.co.uk/salts/salt6.htm Lots and lots of good info on this site. WO 291/1263, "Firing Trials, 17pdr Sherman." "Table VI has been constructed which shows the probability of a hit on a target 5' wide by 2' high (representing a Panther turret) at various ranges using both types of round." Range(yds)APC% AP/DS % 400/ 90.5/ 56.6 600/ 73.0/ 34.2 800/ 57.3/ 21.9 1000/ 45.3/ 14.9 1500/ 25.4/ 7.1 Comments and corrections These assume that the MPI is placed centrally on the target. The trace from the AP/DS round was not seen in 73% of cases by a flank observer, and in no case from inside the tank.
