Best War Movies (re-revisited)....
gaffertape replied to Maximus's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
Well, Maximus, I'm forced to agree with you here. I remember seeing an episode of Young Indiana Jones many years ago (Trenches of Hell most likely) and it was as good as you described. Extremely well put together and acted. It had the 'serial-flavour' of Indiana Jones, but the military background was just exceptional. GAFF -
OT: More SPR questions for grogs
gaffertape replied to Mr. Clark's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
I think the balloons were that simple: It was to deter low-flying planes from running into them or their wires. Not sure about the bangalores... I'd never seen or heard of them until SPR. -
Fighting breaks out in the desert!

I hadn't been all that interested in the desert war modifications, but these pictures have changed my mind. Most impressive. GAFF -

Why no Commonwealth snipers in CM?
gaffertape replied to M. Bates's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
MAXIMUS Chances are there's a locked up alternate thread with your quote there regarding Canadians being an isolationist country that only cares about what happens within its own borders, but I'm going to retort here as politely as possible. Keep your uneducated opinions to yourself. Just keep on reading that Readers Digest For Kids and spare us your ignorance. Oh, and have a nice light beer. GAFF -
Hetzer for me. I've had crappy luck with the L/70s for some reason. Aesthetically, though, the Jagdpanther is the hands-down winner. GAFF

In a recent game, my King Tiger was KO'd by an M18 before it fired a shot, but my lowly Hetzer accounted for the majority of enemy casualties. It even managed to kill a Greyhound at about 10 metres that went for a flank shot. Consider me a big fan of the little Hetzer. GAFF

Cheating, anything going to be done about it?

Cheating, anything going to be done about it?
gaffertape replied to Apoc's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Maybe I've been lucky, but every opponent I've PBEMed (each found on this forum) has been entirely honourable. I like to think (and perhaps I'm naive) that the cheaters are in a small minority. GAFF -
Ah, the demo is but a taste. The final game will likely take over any free time that you have. The option to build your own scenarios or have the computer do it for you make for endless gaming. The additional graphic mods will also spruce up the look of the game as well. PBEM games (and the newly patched TCP/IP option) add a whole new dimention to the game. Playing versus a live opponent is the real test. Welcome to the game. As far as I'm concerned it's the best wargame ever made, for computers or otherwise. GAFF

OK, so I'm an old fart - Is anybody else? (O/T)

Turned 30 in the summer, and clearly have tons left to learn about how to win at wargames. GAFF -
Due to hardware limitations, BTS chose to model only every 4th soldier or so, even in your infantry squads. Check it out - Some US Squads have 12 men, but you will only ever see 3 represented. In the case of crews, you only ever see one soldier by default. When the average gamer has a 1Ghz computer, you might see every single man in a later version of CM (much later) GAFF

"Abandon" hotkey needed, Please :)
gaffertape replied to therontmoore's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Yes, was it 'Eddie' Slovak? Can't remember for sure. He was shot for desertion during the Battle of the Bulge. Due to the somewhat desperate situation for the Americans there, the execution was almost certainly intended as a warning to the troops. I only saw the end of the film with Martin Sheen, and it was quite moving. GAFF -
Yep, its a Sturmtiger, not the somewhat more common Brummbar. My 2 cents? I would recommend toning down the german figure OR using a parallel allied figure on the other side. Am I offended by it? No. But certainly others will be; and your site, which is dedicated to wargaming, will become a haven of flaming. You'll be saving yourself some grief if you do some tweaking. GAFF

I always choose the Firefly over the Challenger, but the Challenger is cheaper and if used well can be as effective. A 'shot trap' is armour on the vehicle that can deflect a shell back into a weak spot on the tank. In the case of the Wolverine (and US M10) I imagine that its the sharply angled gun mantlet that could send a shot into the weak top armour near the drivers' hatch. - Shaun GAFFERTAPE

Crazy Canadian Badger Tank
gaffertape replied to Col Deadmarsh's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
(written on a seal pelt from within my igloo) I find that all of the flame vehicles have somewhat spotty aim, but on occasion I've seen some Wasp crews nail everything as ordered. - Shaun GAFFERTAPE -
In the briefing in one of the CD scenarios (not mentioned for fear of a spolier) they mention that a vehicle will be available should you need to move the 88. However, as stated above, it can't be limbered during battle. GAFF

BTS - Allied vehicle access and new variants
gaffertape replied to a topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
I'd be happy to pay $25 US for some additional units ($35 or so CDN after shipping), but I do understand the problems with compatibility: People who don't want or can't afford the add-on will feel somewhat cheated - they can't play some newer scenarios, and may be left out of PBEMs with people who insist on using any of the new units. Bit of a double-edged sword (though being the greddy swine, I do want that glorious Brummbar). GAFF -

Thanks for the response, Steve. Its good to know that there's at least a smidgen of a possibility. As always, (and I hpoe I'm speaking for most of the forum), we respect whatever decision you come to. GAFF -
