1. Major Tom, I have had that happen in single player against the AI. Not quite the assault you had, but I have had lots of vehicles and some troops do the total opposite of what they were told to do...(this after getting down to their level to scope out everything before giving the orders). I figured it was the AI taking over and exploiting something that I had missed or a bug.
2. Whoops! In my haste I missed the last sentence of Black Sabot's post. Well that saves me the time I was just about to spend driving over to where it used to be and asking about it. Meanwhile, I guess someone will have to re-read ABTF.
3. Lads, I think you will find that the weapon in question was "Nebelwurfer". There used to be one at a store here in the DC area. IT is, in effect, a six barreled electically fired mortar. I don't recall the cal/mm. It was good sized tho. It is mounted on wheels and has six barrels about four feet long. It is loaded then fired from a distance by the crew. I recall that it had quite a backblast.
4. Too add to the list... "THOSE DEVIL'S IN BAGGY PANTS" by Ross J. Carter. This book traces the combat journey of a squad/platoon/company in the 504th parachute Infanrty regt. (PIR) of the US 82d Airborne Division in WWII from North Africa to Germany. Ross Carter wrote it from his own experiences...it is HIS squad (etc). For my money as a later Airborne Veteran, this is well done. It is available in paperback.
5. A partial answer might be in that the Russians were willing to accept much higher casualties. They had the population to sustain it too. I was involved in a "combat-in-the-cities" program for the US Army in the seventies...the research indicated many examples of the Russian's loosing most of a given battalion on a given block or complex...they would just bring up another battalion to replace the one with heavy losses for the next block. I remember one instance where all but a very few survived an assault on a "factory". The Germans had mastered trading "space for time"...it was called the "archipelago" defense when I learned to do it, tho I can't saw what the German Army called it.
6. JK, Really good question. Might I suggest the addition of naval gunfire as well to at least cover the fan for D-Day thru the time a given unit moves far enough inland to no longer be using the five thru sixteen inch guns.(Tho I haven't checked to see if naval fire support is modelled in CM...I remember it being discussed tho) Of course, by that time they would be covered by the fan of organic guns (as you know). BUllethead was a "lanyard yanking Red Leg", we'll see what he knows... [This message has been edited by ARCHANGEL (edited 03-07-2000).]
7. I must agree with Los, arty should be used only when necessary, not wasted. I have noted that the number of rounds that are far off target seems to be just a bit high for reality. Also: When I was taught the call for fire (granted, not during or for WW2 )the MOST important aspect for the FO was MAP reading. Accurate coordinates made it easier for the FDC (either mortar or Arty), to get the shots on target. So, IF you have accurate maps and an accurate map reader and a decent FDC, you should be able to get rounds on the target reasonably quickly and pretty accurately...even when they aren't all observed rounds.
8.
quote:
Originally posted by Gen. Sosaboski: Same problem here! Good thing it's only in Beta! Archangel, where did you find that program so I might be able to get it?

General, You will find END IT ALL at the Ziff Davis site...WWW.ZDNET.COM... END IT ALL is easy to install and easy to use...just read the "read me" with it. I originally began using it with a few flight sims last year and it works wonderfully...recently I have had to use it with CM, as I said. Works wonderfully there as well. Let me know how you do with it...
9. Somewhat akin and posted elsewhere, last week I had a US rifle Squad attack a Stug. They ran up to it, messed around the tube, and ran off. The next thing I knew the Stug tube was unusable. This was all the AI... (I was fighting LD as the Germans)...I assumed they had poured a grenade or two down the tube and disabled it. Whatever they did, it was good to see...
10. Simply put, I have had some hero's as well. Reigburg..60mm squad (forgot the name)..left side...as soon as the 88mm at the rear opens up, this mortar squad takes him out in about ten shots..(good shooting!) ...I move them forward in the trees..later he sights the German 81mm squad and takes them out too...in about ten shots again. This mortar squad made ingress down the left side safer and easier..in both cases HE chose the targeting time and location, I didn't...(being busy on the right side each time) In CE...US rifle squad..left side...forward building facing the woods that the Germans hold. I have a whole platoon in there...from about turn 12 thru turn 35 the German Infantry throw themselves at that house. One US Squad in that platoon in particular does well...when the fight is over and the Germans are in total surrender I check the stats. Now, I KNOW the fighting at that house is severe...some of my squads have only three survivors...but the one squad at the left front of the top floor has had three casualties and has accounted for 36 German Infantry casualties. Again, ALL of this done by the AI, I never "aimed" them once.
11. I had a rather cool little event in LD while back. Playing as the Germans, about turn 25...a Stug was next to the buildings on the left side as you enter the village (from the German view point)...The Stug was putting some heavy fire on a few US MG's nearby when a rifle squad attacked the Stug all by themselves. They ran up to the side, around to the front and stood at the end of the tube. They made some motions at the tube then scurried away. Shortly later the tube was un-usable.(no explosions or other event's were seen) Having been an Infantryman in combat, I assumed that they put a grenade or two down the tube which is something the US Infantry (at least use to be) is taught to do when the situation is somewhere between difficult and desperate. I cheered for the effort this squad made and for the AI that had such programming. [This message has been edited by ARCHANGEL (edited 03-05-2000).]
12. Jeez!! Whenever I run Reisburg as the Germans, the Sharpshooter never fires a shot, even when I pick out his targets for him... Maybe they couldn't get to the driver to pull him out, being under fire...
13. When I first downloaded CM it was fine. In fact, it ran nicely for months. Lately it has begun to lock up about one out of three times. I had END IT ALL on my rig and use it to prevent these lock-ups. Thus far (over the past few weeks) it has fixed the problem.

Make your attacks (or defense) in ways that you haven't done before...test other tactical approaches that you haven't yet used. I also have tried not to use reinforcements when they arrive (in CE in particular), just to have a difference. LIke I said, I know it isn't much help, but it is what I have used so far, and it DID help me...
16. I'm with you Mark IV and PanzerShark, I would love to go to the chats, but their being on YAHOO makes me leery.
17. Bull, Mike and Harold have it 100% correct. Combat is loud..it wasn't until the seventies that the US ARMY got seriously interested in hearing protection (If my aged memory serves) A firefight with just small arms is loud as hell, add Arty, jets, choppers, mortars, rockets etc. and it is deafening.(or, for WW2, remove jets and choppers and add fighter-bombers) I was Infantry but spent a brief time assigned to Armor (M60A1 tanks) after Vietnam. Mike wasn't kidding when he said being near a firing tank could be tough on the ears. Also, on several occasions I was near Arty, up to and including 175mm's when they fired...the concussion around them will beat you up, much less the noise. Flash suppressors are to reduce muzzle flash...same idea on anything from a pistol to a cannon, and everything in between. Muzzle brakes diffuse the gasses...as you already knew.

The German Airborne units were thereafter used as elite Infantry in hard places like Monte Cassino and in France. I have a book about them in specific but I can't get it out of storage just now.
20. OK!! Wouldn't you consider COVERED jeeps and trucks not to be very tactical with those roofs, side curtians, etc. on them. Since CM is a tactical simulation, it would seem to me that covered jeeps and trucks would be left out and only uncovered tactical ones would be included. Maybe supply vehicles would be covered, I don't know. Somebody here must be up to speed on the Supply/Admin side of the war. No doubt there are/were/will be exceptions to the covered/uncovered bit. The Winter of 44 was one of the coldest on record... I'd love to see a White Scout car...

23.
quote:
Originally posted by John Kettler: Back in the 1980s the U.S. Army did a major study on the cause of losses to line infantry units. The major finding was that at this level, the main cause was fire from small arms, which inflicted 80% of the casualties. Believe this was published in INFANTRY magazine. Hope this helps. John Kettler

I am not looking for trouble here, but I recall the study differently. Maybe someone needs to call the Infantry Center to check, but my memory (and personal experience) is that most casualties were caused by arty, mortars, grenades etc., and fewer were from small arms. I THINK the study done in the post-RVN period was for RVN specifically. There were other studies from earlier times with other results. It has been a while and I may not be remembering correctly in my old age. On another part of the debate, I DO recall that DuPuys stats were not necessarily widely accepted as appropriate. That may have changed over the years tho...maybe a call to the CMH would help there. 24. How do you take screenshots in CM??? I was looking at the other Cm site and saw some great ones. Tonite I had one in LD that was pretty good. The Three TD's, a Tiger and a Stug all face-to-face with each other at the very top of the ridgeline. Two TD's were alight and the other TD and the Tiger and Stug were all dead. The closness was point blank for the Tiger and two TD's..the Stug and other TD were about three TD lengths apart. IT was a heck of a good (tho short) fight on that ridgeline. (sigh!) A screenshot would have made the day. Thanks....
