1. I agree about the newer one looking better...as was previously stated, it has more "flow"...might I also add that the buildings are super as well. Really great.
 2. Great story. Good old CCB !!! Thanks, Archangel
 3. I have seen that happen with the tankers as well. I was confounded by it...and the situation exists with rifle squads (also) that stop movement to engage an enemy SMG squad that is 400 meters away... OTOH I have had some butt-kicking mortar crews that have smoked the 88's at Reisburg beautifully. Lemme know when you find the "sierra" list...I have some tankers with the same names who need re-training. [This message has been edited by ARCHANGEL (edited 02-24-2000).]
 4. Bratch, Hmm! I wasn't watching...makes sense tho, I have seen backblast from other AT weapons in the real world start fires... Did you see it happen when you had the same situ ?? I am not totally positive that I had the bazooka's firing at the time since all the German armor was gone and no Infantry was target-worthy just then...my bazooka teams may have been "hiding" at the time...hmm! But you bring up the only plausable explanation.. Great point...I will pay more attention next time... Thank You...
 5. I'll bet it would be one heck of a great fight to try a part of Kursk. [This message has been edited by ARCHANGEL (edited 02-19-2000).]
 6. There is a nice set called THE WEST POINT ATLAS OF AMERICAN WARS...naturally it includes WW2 as well. It used to be sold in a two volume slipcased set. Now it is sold in several smaller volumes. It has great maps that fold out at the back. It may still be at a higher level than you seek, but it is a good set. Now that it is in smaller volumes you might find WW2 as a separate one. One of the members of this site is a WP instructor...maybe he can add some suggestions...
 7. I(usually) use the technique described above...plus, as someone already posted, keep your troops fluid. However, there ARE exceptions... the other day playing CE (US), I had a rifle squad, two bazooka's and a surviving tank crew in one of the little stone bldgs to the left of the road (from the US view)...they were doing a great job for several turns, even bagged a Stug and ran off another with the bazooka's...while I was looking over another part of the battle THAT building caught on fire and only three of them got out...no Stug's were left and there wasn't any incoming mortar or arty fire, so I am assuming the fire was started by a German Pz S team... (I don't know CM's modelling well enough to know how often this sort of fire happens). Once I lost most of a German platoon in that church when the M4's levelled it...so I sympathize with your plight...(and I knew better! ) [This message has been edited by ARCHANGEL (edited 02-19-2000).]
 8. I looked thru the screenshots...the buildings were interesting but there didn't seem to be an actual DROP ZONE for all those Airborne troops. Tree landings are something one avoids when in a parachute. <g> Kiddie game isn't it??
 9.
quote:
Originally posted by Moriarty: Isn't it amazing how fire discipline goes to hell when somebody's shooting back at you?

Yes it is !! But it is exactly the time that is shouldn't go to hell. From personal experience there, some units adhered to it, others didn't. [This message has been edited by ARCHANGEL (edited 02-12-2000).]
 10. 21:04 hrs...I just tried and access was denied since I am not a member...I don't use Yahoo...oh well!!! Thanks Anyway...
 11.
quote:
Originally posted by iggi: So what Big Time can do is supply a unit's base with say 5(whatever) different texture codes each depending on state. All those texture codes have identical textures. Then the player goes in his own BMP file and adjusts them to his liking. Now the other player will not see any new info cause he sees the same identical textures based on state that shipped with the game. Only I see the new textures I added to each texture code included with each state

IGGI, Tell these good folks who you are and what you have done...then they'll know why you are playing around with this stuff... Good to see you again.. Archangel (RB2Beta)
 12. Goodwood, Hang on...you'll get there...and your WO2 was correct... The way I was told: If it works, it was right... if it didnt work, it was wrong...and what works today may not work tomorrow... (I found this to be extordinarily accurate.)
 13.
quote:
Originally posted by EScurlock: That much I know, and that nature of the weapon will not be modeled, but was it commonly used as a smoke generator and was it the standard smoke generating round for the U.S. or were there other chemical types used for battlefield smoke? The reason I ask this is because tanks and artillary have WP. The WP I was introduced to as an artillary troop was especialy packaged to be placed in the breach of the gun in order to make it unusable by the enemy, but that doesn't explain why it was used by tanks and such. Just trying to clear some in my own head on this one. Thanks Eric

E, I have called in WP fire...specifically for the purpose of lighting the ass of the occupying enemy on fire so they would no longer deny us the use of the terrain...it frequently started fires. You might be thinking of the THERMITE grenade that was used to melt breeches and engine blocks and so forth. Willie Pete was a fire starter and had a high intensity burn rate that would nearly melt humans. I can't say for sure about WW2, but I suspect tanks/FA had them for the same purpose...hard to remove enemies in cellars or bunkers etc. would be my guess. Cheers,
 14.
quote:
Originally posted by EScurlock: Ther's been quite a bit of discusion about white phosphorous rounds. I understand that the distict effects WP had on enemy units will not be modeled. That's cool. My question is: was the WP grenade, tank, and howitzer rounds a special type of smoke round, or were they the standard smoke round for the Americans?

E, WP isn't plain old smoke...it burns MUCH hotter and is used to make fires or melt things...
 15. I would add to Eric's thought about basements...sewers are also an intregal part of the Urban Combat enviroment. OK! So modeling them might not be nice... Just a thought.
 16.
quote:
Originally posted by Kurtz: A funny thing happened yesterday. I was playing CE as US, took a German squad prisoner and suddenly they started firing at my troops and ran away!!! Needless to say, they didnĀ“t get far. I did a search on the topic and found out that POW:s can run away when there is own troops nearbay (which it was) but that they shuld be unarmed. Well, this is probably taken care of already but I felt I had to vent my frustration.

I understand your frustration. I captured most of a green US rifle squad. They surrendered nicely and behaved well. Then there was an American counterattack, not even close to where I had moved them under guard, and they all of a sudden had weapons and were firing at my guys. I had moved them to a tree line to get them out of the incoming arty their own side was putting down on top of them(which you are supposed to do in the real world)...I sent a Halftrack to get them and it ended only when they were all dead. I also had a few German POW's do something like that. This is an interesting bit of modelling and, now that I know to expect it, I keep POW's under closer watch and don't move them around too much.
 17.
quote:
Originally posted by Moon: Steve, I've read some very interesting analysis once about firing effectiveness during war. IIRC, statistically only 1 out of every 100,000 small arms rounds during WWII was recorded as a hit. Funny enough, during the Vietnam war, the number went up to something like 1 to 1 million rounds - partly because of the wider use of automatic weapons, I guess, but partly because of the terrain features...

Moon, There was a study done after RVN, that concluded that normal troops would blow thru thier basic load ( 200-odd rounds), VERY quickly. This was attributed to the lack of fire disciplne afforded by having a selector switch on every rifle. That is why the doctrine went back to having an "automatic rifleman" in each fire team...like the BAR man in CM...and removing the "rock n' roll" switch like on the M16A1. My observation, which I think might be borne out by the facts, is that MOST combat injuries are caused by fragments, from actual shells, grenades etc., as well as from chuncks of tree's or rocks etc. that are propelled by explosions and made dangerous from the force behind them.
 18.
quote:
Originally posted by Sarge: AS I RECALL: grazing ( as in a bovine grazing the grass ) taking off the surface at an even trim.... what Archangel refers to i think is called PLUNGING fire...actually at great distance rounds impact in a cone similar to hosing your garden at the furthest reach of the water. you would be firing over medium distance targets if there were any. make sense? sometimes words are so difficult....

Right you are Sarge...thanks for the correction...and no !! words aren't difficult.
 19.
quote:
Originally posted by Goanna: Babs, I beleive this is called grazing fire and it is already in the final game from info posted by Steve a few weeks ago. So start practicing NOT lining up your units for target practice now. All part of the unlearning some of us will have to do from too much beta-demoing. Please understand, I am not looking for trouble, but I thought "grazing fire" was not LOS firing. My memory of it is that it is(for example), firing over a small hill hitting on the other side, but with an MG not a mortar. Of course, it has been a while since I was at Benning or Levenworth et al., so I may be remembering badly and my manuals are in storage. Thanks....
