  1. I've been pleased with the few maps that I've seen so far. Resolution is high enough to zoom in a couple of times and read detailed text and symbols. They are in PDF format, IIRC.
  2. Just got mine in the mail today! I havn't looked at them yet. Yes, please let us know about the other 7 volumes!!!
  3. I'm the guilty one. I mistakenly said that there were 5 men per squad. I knew that there was some sort change to the infantry graphics, but the change is only in the animation sync and the weapons carried.
  4. So, does this mean that it will be harder for a 20mm to take out tanks? It doesn't seem likely that a 20mm could easily disable a Priest by penetrating the upper hull from the front. The 20mm would be ablt to kill the machine gunner through the upper hull, but to consistantly destroy Priests with a first shot kill seems a little unlikely.
  5. Will distance to the target be a factor in the "Death Clock" or determining if the vehicle is dead? It would seem that closer ranges make it easier to determine if the tank is knocked out even if the crew has not bailed yet. In fact, there will be many obvious close range knock-outs where your tanker should be able to fire-and-forget. For instance, we all know that a Sherman will penetrate a MKIV at point blank range. But if that MKIV doesn't "brew up", do we still have to wait for the crew to bail???
  6. Would you mind if I stopped by in mid August? I will be on vacation in Houston and Dallas areas at that time.
  7. OK, I just found it online and ordered it. The web site is horrible for finding something unless you know the exact title. Here's how to find it easily: On the main page, click on advanced search. Put this stock number in with the quotes: "008-029-00376-7" If you dont put the quotes then you will get hundreds of WWII books, which is also interesting to browse through.
  8. and the whole thing is just $23 ??? That's almost too good to believe. What is the scan quality of the maps? If I were to print them out on a large format printer would they come out to their normal size and quality? IIRC some of the maps were large fold out type maps. 9. But there is still a line extending from an HQ unit to a nearby spotter, which kind of implies that something is gained (as opposed to two HQ units, where there is no line). This is why I think the moral and stealth bonuses apply to spotters.</font>
  10. Well, since I have thoroughly tested this over a year ago, I can say that a Command unit has absolutely no influence on the time it takes for the rounds to come in OR how tight the rounds fall. Being in LOS effects how tight the rounds fall and how fast the rounds come in. A FO in LOS of the target spot will have his time tick off in a normal rate, i.e. 1 timer second = 1 real second. A FO out of LOS will have his time tick off twice a slow, i.e. 1 timer second = 2 real seconds. The qualilty of the FO and the nationality will also dictate the amount of time the rounds take to come in although there is still some randomness. Finally, and my most important point: The vast majority of FOs(if not all) are officers themselves. Therefore, FOs in CM are, in a way, command units themselves although they dont actually command any other units. CM does not model having officers in C&C by other officers. What's the point in having a lt. command another lt. or captain?
  11. Yes, the Geforce 4 MX line is really aimed at the 2D mainstream or business market. These are slower cards with limited 3D performance. IIRC, their speed is somewhat comparable to a Geforce 2, possibly slower. Gamers should not be fooled by the GeForce 4 logo on the MX cards. Check this out: Comp U Plus has a great deal on the card that I bought, the PNY Verto GeForce3 Ti 200 AGP - Your Cost ONLY $69 After $30 Rebate! Expires 7/30/02. 99.00. I have been very impressed with this card. It has been rock solid and smooth at 1024x768. I'm running NWN with high graphics detail and anti-aliasing, and I get very smooth graphics. I have yet to test a higher resolution in NWN, but DOD was very smooth at 1280x1024. I think this is the best deal for any video card out there. It is extremely affordable yet Powerful card.
  12. OK, why couldn't you do this last month when I was in Park City?
  13. First off, nobody buys a video card just for Combat Mission. If he were, then a TNT2 card is all he would need. What happens when this guy buys future games like CM 3, GI Combat, and the host of other 3D WWII games that are coming out in the next year? His crappy TNT2 or Geforce 2 wont cut it. He will have wasted money, now he's got to go and buy another card. Plan ahead, you never know what games you'll want within a year's time. Secondly Redwolf, I provided links that prove that the GeForce 3 is not a re-labled GeForce 2. If you refuse to believe it then that's you're problem but don't go giving bad advice to a fellow CM player. GeForce 3DMark 2001 Test Results for the Elsa line of cards(all done with Quincunx Anti-Aliasing and no overclocking): Geforce 3 Ti 500 - 5450 Geforce 3 - 4899 Geforce 3 Ti 200 - 4394 Geforce 2 Ti - 2882 The interesting thing is that the bottom of the line GeForce 3 (ti 200) has a much slower clock speed than the GeForce 2 yet still outperforms the GeForce 2 by 52%. How could the Geforce 3 possibly be a re-labeled Geforce 2??? Again, for those interested, here is the site with these bench mark tests. Redwolf, don't tell me I'm spewing bull**** when I know I've got my facts straight.
  14. Sorry, but you couldn't be more wrong. All reviews/comparisons of Geforce 2 and 3 cards have the Geforce 3 well out-performing the Geforce 2 cards. Check out the results of these Elsa cards: Elsa Geforce Comparison Also, besides just plain better performance, the Geforce 3 cards have the nFiniteFX technology which allows allows programers to create an infinite number of custom effects. In other words, some really cool 3D ****. Read here for more on the nFiniteFX Engine. True, but one shouldn't buy a video card so that his current games run OK, he should buy the card because his future games will run smooth and in high resolution. Planning for the future is the most important thing when choosing a video card. Considering I bought(online) my GeForce 3 ti200 at $120 several months ago, the price has probably dropped a few more dollars. It is more than affordable and still an excellent card for the future.
  15. I have the Geforce 3 Ti200 from PNY. I think it's got only 64 megs of DDR. I love the card. Everything I have is super smooth, Even Neverwinter Nights. I bought it a few months ago for $120, it should be a bit cheaper now. At this point however, if I had to buy a new card I would get teh Geforce 4ti 200. At $140 it's a great deal.
  16. Diel, There is only one Combat Mission game on the market at this point. It's titled Combat Mission Beyond Overlord. The second Combat Mission will be out by the end of the summer or beginning of fall, it's titled Combat Mission: Barbarosa to Berlin. It Seems that CMBO is on some store shelves in parts of Europe, maybe somebody else can give you more information about the retail version. Click on "Purchase" above, then click on the link "ordering options and sales policy page". The mail charges are listed there. Have fun with your new game
  17. Wow, good idea. I can almost see it. Hundreds of guys sitting around wipping out military reference books and discussing the penetration capabilities of the 76mm AP round against a the Panther's lower hull at an oblique angle of 20.5 degrees from a range of 250m. I've got two questions: 1. Where do I sign up for this? 2. How much? 3. When & where? okay, three questions.
  18. You can actually see the welding work on the Ferdinand. Good texture work, guys!
  19. Here's a good idea: Since this was a PBEM game, reload the turn and recompute it. Do this about 50 times. See if you even once get the same results. Better yet, give the turn to me and I'll run it a few times. I'll need your passwords also. [ July 01, 2002, 07:06 PM: Message edited by: Pak40 ]
  20. why dont you create a big map and have the single squad test on one side of the map and put the rest of the platoon on the other side of the map. Block the LOS between the test area and the platoon.
  21. I think there are several misconceptions happening with your expectations, which most new CM players make (myself included, when CM first came out): 1. You're correct in saying that you should have played hotseat. Only in that mode can you fully see the true damage to the enemy infantry. 2. Machineguns, although more effective than other small arms, are not very effective at ranges of 300m or greater. Take an infantry .30 mg and look at the firepower stats for those ranges and you'll see that the firepower is greatly reduced. 3. This is probably the most important misconception that new CM players make - OPEN GROUND does not mean that the land is completely flat or featureless. Combat Mission abstracts each terrain type's cover & concealment values. For OPEN GROUND this means that little things like undulations, mounds and sparse vegetation are taken into account. Although CM visibly portrays an infantry squad as one unit, we must remember that CM abstracts the squad into a 20-40 meter space and that each man would be finding the best cover available. This means that soldiers will lay down in that small ditch or undulation which could theoretically be out of line of sight of the tanks. If you truely want to test a flat & featureless terrain, I think pavement would be a better choice.
  22. If the only problem with your ISP is the email then why don't you use a hotmail or yahoo email account? I use yahoo for emailing CM PBEM files and it works fine. You might want to make two accounts. Have one opponent mail to one account and your other opponent can mail to the other. Each account can hold up to 5 or 6 megs. So long as your ISP connection is consistent, you shouldn't have a problem with downloading from yahoo or hotmail email. [ June 23, 2002, 02:57 PM: Message edited by: Pak40 ]
  23. If you're looking for a true first person narrative with increadible detail, then you have to get Donald Burgett's books: Currahee: A Screaming Eagle in Normandy! Seven Roads to Hell The Road to Arnhem Beyond the Rhine (I havn't read this one yet)
  24. Hmm, look at the disk surface for scratches or dirt. Try copying all the files from the disk onto your hard drive instead of doing an install. This might work so long as you keep the correct folder structure.
  25. But, if your men are behind a wall and in a foxhole, then they will stay put because the AI recognizes the foxhole as good cover.
