  1. This is an idea I posted a year ago re having groups of units that have seen battle and can be purchased as a whole to be used in subsequent fighting. Seems like a good time to dig it up, I liken it to the traditional 'campaigning' concept..... Paste> Having core forces to carry thru lots of fights in a 'campaign' is something discussed alot here. I'm not really that hung up on the idea and don't mind to much not having it. However I was reading a thread WRT CM2 and I had this idea (my one for the year, now I can sit back and relax, hehe). Basically the idea was to be able to save your units after a battle which can then be used in any other battle as long as it's after the date of the last battle. So say you start with a force and play a quick battle. At the end you're prompted to "Save the survivors". It saves the remnants of the force for you and calculates it's point value rounding up to the smallest unit denomination of that type (ie it fleshes out a squad of men as opposed to counting say just 3 survivors). Prolly wanna exclude fortifications. So next time your ready to fight and you have the option to purchase units you can purchase this force as part of your point total and then the remaining points as per normal. Then at the end of that fight you can save the force again with what ever is left and so on and so on. Restrictions could be the force becomes available the month after it's last fight and obviously if you don't have enough points for this particular battle then you can't use it. SO, as an example: June 44, 1000 point US force has a battle and win/lose ends up as a 500 point force. I next play a QB dated July 44 that lets me have 1500 points. I spend part of those points buying my saved force with the same guys for 500 points and the other 1000 on new stuff. At the end of this fight I've got a force of 1200 points worth left which I save and can use again later in a QB dated August 44 or later and that lets me use at least 1200 points. Etc, etc every month (or however often you want to field the force) until May 45. The force could grow huge if you chose successively bigger fights or be allowed to stay small depending on the size/point totals of the engagements you choose to participate in. Draw backs I can think of off the top of my head would be you can only use the forces in battles that allow you to purchase units. So best might be to play thru an Operation and then use those survivors as a core for lots of subsequent QB's or self created ops. You could combine two (or more) smaller forces into one by buying them both at force selection and then saving them at the end of the battle thus combining this force into one. Dunno about the traditional upping a unit's ratings between fights, maybe after 6 months or whatever seems reasonable. Also would need to keep leader names and be nice to keep the kill totals of course. Doable? I have no idea but thought I'd share with the group. 2. Check it from Counter Strike page...bring on the virtual gladiators. "The CPL -- Thursday, December 6, 2001 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The CPL World Championship has kicked off today and runs until the 9th at the Hyatt Regency in Dallas Texas. The event boasts $150,000 in cash prizes and over 900 competitors. Myself, Barney (Mr Fraggle), Pink from FLF, and a couple Valve and Gearbox guys will be present and it really should be a fun time for everyone. Don't hesitate to stop by if you're in the Dallas or surrounding areas."
  3. I only know the key combo for ü as I have 2 ü's in my surname. Anyway combo is hold down ALT and type 0252 or basically ALT+0252 This works with just about any windows app. Other vowels are similar, just mess about with the number while holding down ALT, does caps versions too. Regards, Fenris
  4. Sorry for caps but I think Sightreader's idea of using diagonal setup zones is excellent. See his thread on the main board entitled "Edge hugging is obselete! WooHoo!" for more details. Am hoping scenerio builders will start using this method where appropriate. Regards, Fenris
  5. Suggest this excellent idea be brought to the attention of BTS for use in future developments of CM. Really need to make the scenerio building peeps aware of this method too. Well done. Fenris
  6. Was out buying some clothes today (stuff to wear clubbing - so no the shop ain't into military stuff) and I found a T-shirt made buy a Japanese company called Syke with a detailed isometric cut away drawing of a Tiger on it. Couple of different colours, some Japanese text and the company logo with the panzer across the chest. Nothing to id the tank actually on the shirt. Was in Glue in Pitt street if any Sydney siders wish to check it out. Fen
  7. The best book I have is called "Small Unit Actions During the German Campaign in Russia" It's a Department of the Army (US) Pamphlet No20-269 dated July 1953 reprinted in 1995 but Eastern Front/Warfield books. It was produced, as the Preface states, to be a guide and incite into the conditions of the Russian front based on the experience of the German army during WW2. It has detailed descriptions of small actions by all branches of the German army during the campaign including maps. Very interesting. 8. Good idea. Simple solution, very appropriate We're already using minatures at the platoon level. Alot of the tools in the game would help with rule determination. Arty can be represented for working out possiblities of fire support during an fight. Self propelled guns or mortars used in an off the map bombardment role because they're within range of a battle. "Then the type of random map used for the tactical fight is the type represented by that terrain" Maps can be generated as required and saved. This would add up to be a detailed version of the contested parts of the whole mud map. Detailed maps can be reused (in editted form if need be) as the fight moves across old battle fields. A Mod could be made that actually simplifies the look of the units and the terrain. This modded version of CM could be used solely for the campaign mud map representation. Well they're the first things that I thought of - idea has good potential. Regards, Fenris
  9. Mortars are great weapons, I try to get them all the time. Fen
  10. Please ponit me at the CMMC home page. Thanks, Fen
  11. OK, well I guess Corn that you've been "told" and you get the picture. Now back to the game which you will soon have...If you have any questions you should try finding an answer via the search function on the top right of this page. Also after the initial fun of all those new toys download some of the community produced mods that greatly enhance the look and feel of the game. There are also heaps of scenrios to get too. Then once you've got the hang of it vs the AI start playing against the rest of us via email or online. Let us know if how it goes. Regards, Fenris
  12. I would pay money to have new CM2 features retro fitted to CMBO if possible. How many other people would be prepared to pay? After all BTS is a business, making money is the idea, $15 or $20 patch CD or download wouldn't cause me any grief. Reg's Fen [ 06-06-2001: Message edited by: Fenris ]
  13. Haaa, this discussion of 'Steve' sounds exactly the same as one about ROF or armour penetration values. The guy's another human - get some perspective, he can say and do what he feels. The thinkness of his skin is as immaterial as the length of a piece of string - he's another person and he'll react how he reacts, so deal with it. Also, if the fact that CMBO is such a huge success is not creditials enough to have faith in BTS's ability to make/market a winning product in CMBB then WTF is? Cliche - All things come to those who wait...Would people agree that this was true with CMBO? So the moral here is...
  14. Looking very nice, well done all round. Regards, Fen
  15. Pretty sure the Australian army also fields a handful of Leopard I's. [ 04-12-2001: Message edited by: Fenris ]

  17. Just mailed you Seahawk. Look forward to joining in if possible. A large historic scenerio would be interesting Thanks Fen
  18. I'll have a go, email me: kaos_war_monk@hotmail.com Also really like Seahawk's method...That is something I've wanted to try, team multiplayer, each player is a platoon commander just like you said. Even better if each player had a company, good/interesting for a large engagements. Also you could have higher level player commanders who indicate their orders for the company players below them by selecting the Co HQ unit (ie your character in the game) and set up a general order that indicates basically what's required for this turn, move over here, shoot here etc. This could include some brief written instructions relating to the order in the email for the file. The company commander gets the file sees the CO wants him to move his company into those woods and then he plots the moves and fire orders for the units he commands. Image it'd make for a slow game though Anyway, let me know, thanks Fen
