  1. Not necessarily. The game could have a built in SMTP server & IMAP client. A servlet could send and recieve game files automatically. Enter the opponents email address & the game could check your inbox, assemble the files & signal turn waiting. You could then open the game proper & play it. The game would then chunk the emails & send them behind the scenes. Suit me.
  2. Who's got time to play TCP/IP? Also, I play against people from Singapore to the east cost USA. How could you do that without some form of asynchronous play? And who plays solo? It'll never match playing a person because dancing on the AI's grave just doesn't have the appeal. Like FPS games, you play against the AI until you're good enough to play against friends. Dropping PBEM play would be a huge mistake, regardless of file size.
  3. I killed 4 FO's with a sniper, one of whom was 210mm. I reckon he won me the fight.
  4. I think in the CW it was Firing Officer? paging JonS....could JonS come to the thread please.
  5. Are you sure? I've used it with *great* success against troops in trees. I assumed the wavelength would be too long to get a consistent return off the foliage and with the shell guaranteed to blow at altitude it's assured a treeburst. Willing to be proved wrong but that's the way it seemed to me.
  6. IL2's (air support) make great kitty killers. Apart from that, buy CMAK.
  7. The info about the 76 *is* interesting. By tactical fix, do you mean flanking, ambush or hail fire? Ambush would be difficult on the offense, hail fire suicidal for a large portion of your force and at least in CM, if you see a way to a Panthers side you know your opfor has an AT gun in those trees. My book budget is booked for now but good luck with it. What was the response in the GF BTW?
  8. For those unable to get Tarkus's masterpiece as CMMODS is down I've taken the liberty of copying it to my share. It'll be on for the next few days. main mod 1.0 patch 1.1 patch
  9. Is it possible to have the scenario designers home addresses to send them a "thank you"? At night. In the rain. With large arty.
  10. She'll be fine. My friends lad had a touch & has no ill effects. So don't worry...ok that's imposible but do your best.
  11. TBH, I feel a drier name might help. Something like "Tactical simulator - WWII". I was looking for a game like CM for years but only knew to buy it from a review. If it had a more descriptive name it would stand out of the mire of RTS's out there. It is a unique product, it needs a unique name. We're all going to buy it anyway - lets give some other people out there a chance.
  12. Mate don't bother - have you seen this? BTW - I owe you a setup - I'll get it to you soonest. And if you really need your original BMP's back, install the game to somewhere else then copy the BMP folder into your {whatever}/run/bmp folder.
  13. I always tell the absolute truth to my PBEM opponents. The ABSOLUTE TRUTH.
  14. That's brilliant. I wish I could get our designers to work so fast. MrUltraUIPicky would still say that the on state of the "infantry/support/armour/arty" buttons should be olive. But not me, I think it does a good job. I have seen a dual drum MG34 but I'm not sure how it'd work unless 1 drum was just storage, like taping your mags together. Cheers Tarkus - you've added a lot to the community.
  15. Brilliant. Thanks for this, I've been cancelling a lot of arty strikes. I play British mainly & the 2" mortar, while I love it dearly, has a terrible tendency to block my own spotters LOS - cue much curses from me. At least now I can check if I really need to. This is also a brilliant tip. Cheers Wicky.
  16. Tarkus - I'm tired & going to bed. I'll give your points proper responses tomorrow. First though, can I point out one of the things I love about it? The gun details really do it for me. You can notice & read it so much better than the original. It's already given me more insight into my units. Oh yeah and the unit portraits. OK that's 2 but I said I was tired.
  17. Tarkus, I've got to warn you - I'm an Information Architect. I deal with UI designers all day. We design websites and as websites have no universally agreed rules you've got to establish a style & make it consistent all the way through to make an intuitive experience. So - I'm going to note a few things I saw but it's all my opinion & you've actually done a brilliant job. All these are very minor: From the initial menu screen. It has the "The Hitler line" panel. However the panel stays on the next screen which makes no sense. Perhaps overlay the panel on the center picture which gets replaced? You develop a nice button scheme. This seems to be Grey - not selected Olive - selected Yellow - rollover Red - click this is all good and works as the yellow brings the eye to the mouse & the red has a nice drama. However there's a few places where the convention is broken. One that comes to mind is choosing "single player" etc where the non-selected buttons are yellow. This doesn't work as the eye is drawn to what isn't selected. Another instance is when you're choosing your units the non-selected buttons are yellow. Also, on the QB map choice page the "load from file" button is yellow. This not only breaks the convention but the button is *too* different from the yes/no buttons. I know what you were trying to do but the functionality is still related. IMHO it would be better with a button obeying the style convention but being a different shape. This suggests a similar but different function. On the map screen the map move/height change buttons have yellow when clicked. Also, the quit button has a yellow background. If you've going to use yellow as the rollover you shouldn't use the same to imply a warning. The background of the panels where leadership abilities would display are red. So when there are no abilities it looks like a warning. Most troops of course don't have leadership to fill them. I can't take a screenshot which includes the mod, how odd is that? But the LED for fog is a definite orange. The rest of the things I noted are personal preferences & as such should be ignored. The border to the windows was too thick for me. The background colour of the "loading" window was a maroon which doesn't go with the rest - not sure it can be changed? The scenario selection screen scenario separators was too thick, which makes the window too crowded. Please don't take this critique as negative - I love the mod & I'm never going back. Cheers.
  18. I love it Tarkus - thanks a lot. If I can offer suggestions without sounding ungrateful...? Could you please tone down the "theatre" colour for Italy in the summer? It kind of overpowers the rest of the interface. The other thing is when you roll over the ground & sky thumbnail the panel shown overwrites the LED's which is a bit jarring. Not sure if you can change that. I'm also getting a red LED for clear sky - is that right? Anyway the main point is thanks - this has redefined what I thought a mod could do.
  19. You obviously know the people on this forum better than I do. But I do find that if you demonstrate what you mean to people by change for the better 90% of them will grasp it with open arms. The 10% will be vocal maybe but nontheless will be a very small minority. If you're going to ask people to think, in any field, it's best to give them a seed of change & let them build it rather than just saying "think of something great." If you feel that you have some revolutionary ideas for CMX2, and I bet you do, I for one would love to hear them. Here's my Big Idea. Not well thought through as it's off the cuff but in order to demonstrate some original ideas on the subject. No god views. Each view of the battlefield is a real view through the commanders eyes. You can access menus specific to the eye's you're occupying. Therefore if all your command team gets wiped out - tough. You can't change the plan except in increments & can't call arty etc unless you get a radio man back into command.
  20. And the car designer thinks..."Wait, maybe if i showed the guy what I mean he'd get a better understanding of the scale of answers I'm looking for". So the car designer says to Grog "No - here, this is what I'm talking about". And with that spreads out some designs for the New Hovercars. Well, Grog is taken aback. "Here's me" he thought "using this car and liking it but this guy who is paid to come up with new ideas has DONE IT. This is brilliant." So the designer and Grog sit back and look at each other. "Phew" says Grog. "You've really moved the goalposts here". "Well yeah. I love designing cars and I know what the tech can do now so I'm doing the best I can think of." "Brilliant...but see this engine outlet which makes it corner, if you backed that up with a wheel you could drop you could corner quicker at speed. And this Double windshield...I guess it's a good idea but wouldn't it weigh too much? You could get more legroom without it..." Grog and the designer whiled away many hours in useful discussion. Both kicking off ideas in each other. Both getting what they really wanted from the New Hovercar.
  21. Thanks for the post but I belive this is not the case in CMAK. I think the spotter needs LOS *throughout the delay period*. If smoke or dust obscure the view throughout that period the strike is treated as being out of LOS. I'd really like this to be tested, or if anyone has done it in the past could they post here. I'll test it myself over the weekend if no one has any hard data.
  22. Brilliant work. It looks like it'll change the whole feel of the game - thanks.
  23. I'm sorry mate. A sad day, surely.
