Tiny battle QBs

Recommended Posts

Still getting poor unit selection in these, particularly 'mixed'. This produces, predominantly, vehicle or AT-gun based forces with just a few infantry. The ratios seem off.

Happy to have the occasional AFV heavy force, as above, but more often than not should be getting mainly infantry with one or two vehicles or AT guns with one or two specialist units at most.

In the most recent had two assault guns, an AC and a single HMG team in a HT.

Also, still no overall force leader, usually two or three seperate platoons. This flies in the face of the engines' emhasis on C2.

Yep, same problem here. With the first series I enjoyed playing small battles (500-700 points) against the AI as practice and pastime, and part of that was "making do with what you're given" instead of picking the units myself. But the current automatic unit purchasing code seems to prefer odd mixes like four stugs thrown together with a mortar platoon all the time, and I find that annoying.

I forgot they were supposed to have fixed this, so picked (well, ran through a couple of suggestions for til I got something that looked sane at first glance, deleted an FO cos they didn't have any Arty and replaced it with an HMG) Germans. But then it gave me a Medium map even though I asked for a Tiny one. Perhaps it's just that there aren't any tiny village maps.

Happens in medium-sized battles as well. All tanks+artillery or all TD or all infantry with no tanks. Think I even saw the Ai having no artillery once.

Also the maps sometimes are totally different from what you picked. Like a heavy mass-bocage in a huge map when I chose OPEN :D

Actually you asked for a "tiny" battle, not a tiny map. Map sizes are Small-Medium-Large. A random choice map setting requires the QB AI to select a map that generally fits the battle size you requested. A smallish Medium map of say 825 X 800 is the same as a largish Small map size. The QB AI is just doing it's best to suit you needs. Come to think of it isn't that Kinda like picking out an anniversary present for another man's wife :D

This is certainly not true of my install. I have a selection box for battle size that offers Tiny-Small-Medium-Large-Huge-Random, that I expect to affect the points I have available, and I also have a selection box for map size that offers exactly the same options. I selected Tiny. With automatic map selection. I just went and checked.

Why the devil is it offering me the option of a Tiny map if there's no such beastie?

Now, having looked at the 'human selection' of maps for meeting engagements, the only 'huge' one is a download from the Repository and there aren't any Tiny, but it doesn't seem unreasonable for the selector to only go as many sizes up from the chosen option as it needs to find a valid map, and there are two small ME village maps which it has overlooked.

Even better, if the game doesn't include the descriptor 'tiny' for any map, wheresoever designed why is it one of the options?

I fired up a Small QB on Mixed the other day and ended up with a platoon of Marders, which constituted the bulk of my force. On an Open map. Wonky, yes, but also challenging. I had to dismount crews* to spot.

*- The scout detachment for squads is a great addition to the game. How about, in future versions, something similar for AFVs? Like an option to send out the commander to reconnoiter, leaving the rest of them in the vehicle.

I just ran through a bunch of different suggestions on a tiny mixed force and they seemed fine to me. Sure, they seem to like armour and mortar teams but most of the time I did actually get a "mixed" force.

I actually like the unpredictability of it, compare it with ToW for example, where you know almost exactly what units the enemy will pick because the guidelines are so strict.

This is actually realistic. It was very common for tanks in unfamiliar areas to stop on the reverse slope of a hill and the TC to dismount, crawl to the crest, and scope out the terrain with binoculars before bringing the tank up.

Most recon was done in a similar manner, with the armored car hidden on a reverse slope and the dismounted crew conducting the actual recon out of the vehicle (usually quite concealed).

Of course, you may have used your crews more aggressively than described above. But I do often wish you could dismount a one man vehicle scout.

Getting that sort of mix sometimes is OK; trouble is it seems to be the norm.

I would be expecting to get a random mix of, sometimes mainly infantry with a tank or two; sometimes infantry and tanks, half and half; somtimes more tanks and only some infantry. In my experience I am only getting the last one, pretty much everytime.

A couple of weeks go I mentioned three QBs Ii got in succession, with the following mixes

1; no troops at all, only foxholes

2: 20 PSWs

3 16 Marders
