VOTE: the best improvements over CMx1

now that we have had CMSF for a while, lets vote for the best improvements over CMx1, all in the degenerate spirit of Eurovision Song Contest.

give 10 euro points to what you consider the best improvements in CMSF.

my euro points go to:

3 points - reduced borg spotting

3 points - improved editor

3 points - improved waypoints

1 points - improved artillery model

1 - 1, with all it's teething troubles.

When LOS/LOF and squad behaviour is fixed it will be brilliant.

I feel a terrible commander when I see all those bodies leading nowhere. It makes me think of the CM1 battles I've fought where I pressed on with 40% casualties, or took a short cut I knew would get 10% killed.

I can't imagine doing that now I can see their accusatory corpses.

I'd love an abstracted soldier to be shown as an icon when the squad is out of viewing range, just to give me an idea what's going on though.

Putting aside the 'only if it would work properly' question.

I like the way guys enter buildings via doorways.

I like the 1-1 look.

I like the way the vehicles move.

I like the graphical improvement overall.

I even like the RTS bit although the controls are very unweildy, I know there are hot keys but I'm a Mouse Man.

My wife happily gives 10 points to the overall suckiness of the game as I had warned her before it came out that I would be spending all of my free time with it (based on my addiction to CMx1). Silly me. Because I "don't get it", I spend my time doing honey-do chores instead (more fun than CMSF). I'm in the process of preparing her for Black Shark and Spore. I just hope I'm not jinxing those games like I did this one.

POSITIVE 10 POINTS

+3 Improved Editor

(the added complexity is awesome for design)

+2 1-1 Representation

(a huge step forward in realistic simulation)

+3 Infantry Aquire Ammo/Weapons System

(ability to resupply was much needed

for those longer battles and when you

just gotta have that hand cannon)

+1 Specialist Infantry

(Love how infantry are better or worse at

different tasks, much more realistic)

+1 Improved Artillery System

(The artillery system has much more variety

and options, much more flexible)

NEGATIVE 10 POINTS

-1 No on-map artillery

(I miss running my mortar teams around,

it would also be nice to have on-map SP

artillery and static for scenario design)

-3 Inadequate Infantry Model

(-tactics,-cover,-concealment, an insanley

important concept for warfare/game

enjoyment)

-2 Lack of Infantry/Vehicle/Weapons Variety

(the unit variety was awesome in CM1)

-3 LOS/LOF Issues/Limitations

(I would have never dreamed this would

be an issue in CMx2, LOS/LOF is one of

most key concepts in warfare)

-1 Lack of detailed individual unit setup

(ammo,weapons,special gear,unit remaining

strenght/casualties, really enjoyed

customizing CM1 units)

The scenario design possibilities, tactics and total AI control a skilled and veteran scenario designer has in the scenario editor are an order of magnitude superior to what was offered in CMBO! REALLY

Anyone who has taken the time to try to design a scenario and plot and lay out AI moves and tactics in the AI editor knows this.

At this point I would say that concept of "anyone" is only about %1 -%5 of ALL users and purchasers of the gamen (currently). The AI editor and scenario editor were not designed for the casual FPS gamer for sure, but instead they were intended for the disciple of tactics and student of the grand strategy (OK the strategy thing might be "reaching" a bit but you know what I mean).

If you are bored with the game and think it SUCKS waiting for the v.05 patch, play in the editor and set up a scenario then play the scenario and see if the AI can beat you. Seriously! the AI editor and the map builder and scenario editor are not likely to change in any substanial way any time soon (in ANY patch) so why not build a new scenario and post it for free on cmmods.com???

What are you waiting for?!!!

I only play on Elite as I also only play CMx1 in Full FOW. This may skew my answers.

Improved

3 - Improved graphics (though I do hate the washed out look) it does have great potential

3 - Much improved editor (including more building heights)

2 - No Borg Spotting

1 - Editable waypoints

1 - Improved Arty

Degraded

-3 - Lack of info. This may seem silly and it may be that I know my CMx1 better but I am having a hard time knowing what is happening to my units. How many have been put out of action? If there are 2 men left, how many did I start with? I do not want to hunt around for little red circles. This also includes hit information on vehicles and end of game unit accomplishments.

-2 - I do not like the 1:1 representation. I like to deal with my units in squads and this complicates matters if they are strung out all over the board. Where are they really located? I have no idea as the info bar does not tell me in what terrain they are located (see above)

-1 - No On board arty

-1 - Point picks for QBs

-0.5 - The music. I hate that guitar riff when the scenario is loading and it gets on my nerves very quickly. I liked the classical music much better. I do not know what I hate it so much, it is just annoying.

As you can see the positive for me still outweigh the negatives. I think by the WWII version (or whatever is next) this should be a solid, fun game just as the mechanics of CMBB were more solid than in CMBO (and again improved in CMAK). Getting more info to the player (within the confines of no-borg spotting) would make this an immensely more enjoyable game. I am hoping this will all come in time when Charles codes it in.

Hope springs eternal as I am still hoping for a Korean War game.
