Earl Grey
Well, from what I can make out, i´d say they´re going to wade through a deeper river or soemthing like that. If you look closely, there is a bridge in the background. And it would be sensible, too, to keep your boots and trousers dry... Could aslo be a photo of a few reenactors trying make you think what the hell they are doing there...

Sivodsi
Another example of the "Blitz Myth": with the armor speeding ahead, only by traveling light could the infantry hope to keep up.

Guest ExplodingMonkey
I'm not sure you'd want to wade without your boots on. While it makes sense to keep everything dry, I'd want to somehow protect my feet from injury. "Sorry the platoon's arriving under-strength sir. We had three twisted ankles and six feet slashed open back at the river."

Earl Grey
Then try and take those marching boots, wet them thoroughly and march a few dozen miles with them being wet. And the pants, too. Maybe it was rather cold and the soldiers needed dry feet after fording... I just don´t know, but I think I´ll remember having read about similar incidents.

Michael Dorosh
Bridges are very often booby trapped in wartime, or in peacetime wargames/exercises declared by the umpires to be "destroyed" and therefore unusable. So fording a river with a bridge nearby is not unusual.

Sergei
Yes, most likely (IMHO) peacetime maneuvres. The men wouldn't want to bunch up like that on a hill top that can be seen from the opposite bank if there was any risk of death...

Michael Dorosh
There is an oft repeated story from my own regimental history; when on exercise in the UK in WW II, upon finding a bridge with the sign CONSIDER THIS BRIDGE DESTROYED placed upon it by an Umpire, an intrepid Highlander is reported to have written on the sign in chalk "consider I have mended it."
