Well, from what I can make out, i´d say they´re going to wade through a deeper river or soemthing like that. If you look closely, there is a bridge in the background. And it would be sensible, too, to keep your boots and trousers dry...

Could aslo be a photo of a few reenactors trying make you think what the hell they are doing there... :D

I'm not sure you'd want to wade without your boots on. While it makes sense to keep everything dry, I'd want to somehow protect my feet from injury.

Then try and take those marching boots, wet them thoroughly and march a few dozen miles with them being wet. And the pants, too. ;)

Maybe it was rather cold and the soldiers needed dry feet after fording... I just don´t know, but I think I´ll remember having read about similar incidents.
