Great show on History Channel!(US)

Recommended Posts

I just watched an episode of Dangerous Missions on the Sherman and I must say it was outstanding! Much of the footage was new to me (and believe me I have seen LOTS of WWII documentary stuff, just ask my wife...) and the accompanying narration was not beset by the customary gross misstatements and such. There was even some good footage of the Pershing. Really good stuff!!!

If you happened to miss it, stay up late or set your VCRs to tape it at the later showing (12:00 Eastern US), you won't be disappointed.

Same here!! It was excellent and contained alot of unseen footage for me. Good stuff. Makes one wonder how much footage out there has never been shown. I like it colorized too way better. Then they did WWII in color, that was amazing.

TeAcH,

Believe it or not, that film wasn't colorized. It was real period color film. Watch the U.S.

History Channel for the inevitable repeat of "World War II in Color." It'll blow your mind and reframe your whole visual model of what the war looked like. Getting the gray out changes everything in terms of fleshing things out and making them immediate.

You can probably buy the video directly at the History Channel site.

Speaking of color, I was watching the making of Band of Brothers on HBO last night. They desaturated the colors to make the film look more "authentic." I think they used the same effect in SPR. It was explained that people expect to see WWII in B&W, so the desaturated colors appear to increase historical accuracy. Maybe that's why some of us prefer the subdued CM graphics (on topic post smile.gif). Those WWII in Color episodes are really cool. There was a recent documentary about a P-47 squadron that was all in color. It was really amazing.

Although the camo version of german tanks in CMBO are awesome they always seem strange to me because I have rarely ever seen them in anything but black & white. So for kicks I did a screenshot of a couple of vehicles and converted it to B/W.

I think it looks kind of historical & would like to see how it would play. So, is there a way to play CM in b/w on Windows?

I caught most of it. It was interesting to see the Panther in Cologne get hit three times and that you could see the glow of the hot metal where it was penetrated and then when it caught fire the glow came from inside the tank.

Seeing the guy getting out of the sherman without a foot and roll of the back deck was gruesome.

Showing again Sunday August 19, 2:00-3:00pm. Here's the teaser:

Tank Crews

During WWII, American tank crews duked it out with Nazi Panzers in a high-explosive duel to the death. The German tanks had thicker armor and better guns than the mainstay of the U.S. armored forces, the M-4 Sherman. For many crewmen, the Sherman lived up to its nickname as a steel coffin. But what the tanks lacked in firepower and protection, the crews made up for in guts and good old-fashioned Yankee ingenuity. We'll meet some of these armored warriors from WWII. TV PG

There is also a series running on the Hitler Youth. A five part series that chronicles how a whole generation was molded into an instrument of war by a madman and his equally insane cronies.

Hitler's Youth -

Deployment

The Nazis viewed the younger generation as a willing workforce. Under Hitler, young people were deployed wherever necessary--whether to bring in the harvest, gather raw materials, work with the Emergency Services, or denounce those who failed to toe the party line. The fate of young men was to become soldiers, that of young women to bear children for the Fuehrer. Moving statements from those who experienced this indicate how many of them regarded this destiny as totally natural. TV PG

Seduction

In a sweeping series on the history of young people under the Nazis, we learn why, as Hitler said in 1938, "...they will never again be free for the rest of their lives." Part 1 looks at the Hitler Youth, the official state youth organization that became obligatory in 1940. It all seemed harmless at first. Any adventurous young person who wanted to have fun found that the Hitler Youth offered a great deal, including a sense of belonging to a group. Learn how Nazis used it to seduce German youth. TV PG

Molded

Permanent indoctrination of an entire nation had to begin with the young. Nazi leaders acted accordingly with the goal of establishing Nazi ideology as the norm for a whole generation. Many former members of Nazi youth organizations now realize that, although they were not aware of it at the time, compassion and all humanitarian attitudes towards life were systematically driven out of them. We show how they were brought to the stage where they would follow the Fuehrer without question. TV PG

Delusion

Hitler secured virtually complete control over a generation by mandating that boys and girls join Hitler Youth organizations, where the state gained total power over their daily lives, development, and future. Only those who had proven themselves and had fully internalized Nazi delusions could join the Elite, who would one day occupy leading positions in the Greater German Reich. We provide evidence of the pressure the youth organizations exerted and what it meant to be excluded from them. TV PG

Sacrifice

In an insane belief in ultimate victory, Hitler Youth members were sacrificed as cannon fodder. As the war drew to a close, child soldiers were sent into battles that could only end in slaughter. Even in the last days, some youth still took part in crimes against humanity. Unconditional surrender meant survival, but it brought disillusionment and the realization that they had been utterly deceived. Many former Hitler Youth have yet to come to terms with the fact that they are thought to be guilty. TV PG

Saw it last night and recorded it. That footage of the Pershing battling the Panther in Cologne was priceless. And to put the icing on the cake, they interviewed the commander of that Pershing to explain the entire situation.

To Paraphrase

"The nation secured virtually complete control over a generation by mandating that boys and girls join child care organizations, where the corporate state gained total power over their daily lives, development, and future. Only those who had proven themselves and had fully internalized socialist delusions could join the Elite, who would one day occupy leading positions in the Federal Governmanet or Corporate board. We provide evidence of the pressure the youth organizations exerted and what it meant to be excluded from them (for not being PC)."
