Schrullenhaft Posted May 22, 2020 Share Posted May 22, 2020 I'm not seeing anything that sticks out as being something that could interfere. What USB devices do you have plugged in ? It turns out that Defender Anti-virus DOES have active protection (compared to previous versions of Windows Defender that only performed scans), so adding an exception within that might be helpful. Supposedly you should get notified when it blocks something, but that doesn't always seem to happen with a number of security programs. You can also temporarily disable it with these instructions. There is an instance of 'msiexec.exe' running, which suggest that something is installing. Does this still appear after a reboot ? There was also an executable/service that was running that involves 'app virtualization' (AppVshNotify.exe), but it appears that it is associated with MS Office. 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I recommend creating a folder within your chosen program drive (D: for me), named something like CM Installs, then install everything to that location and create an exception for the whole folder in Windows Defender (it's what I've done and everything works for me). You may need to make a similar exception in any other AV software you are running. PS - @Schrullenhaft Would you have any idea how to minimise 'Out Of Memory Errors' in CM:A or CM:SF1 with Win10? Sgt.Squarehead Posted May 23, 2020 Share Posted May 23, 2020 (edited) Set up an exclusion for that whole folder.....Open defender, navigate to 'Virus & threat protection settings', scroll down and select 'Exclusions'. That's the only extra thing I've done and all the games work fine for me (barring irritating out of memory errors in CM:A). PS - If you have a subfolder within C:\SIMS for CM, you could set up the exclusion for that instead. The games still won’t run. Also, the Apps were not seen running in Task manager. The same games run fine on my Win 10 laptop that I have had for about 3 years. So, not sure if there is something different in the Win version(s) I have in this 2020 machine. Would a Network on the new machine be problem? If they were corrupt, then they would either not run, crash during installation or possibly give you an error about the files being copied/installed. Reinstalling with the Antivirus off may help, though I'm not sure what would get blocked during installation. Some security programs interfere so much that you need to turn them off or the installs don't go right. I wouldn't have suspected that of the MS Defender, but maybe that is an issue now. I wouldn't assume that a 'network' would be an issue. What kind of video card do you have? I'd like to see screenshots of the contents of the game's Data folder to see if everything that should be in there is in there. Regarding the Activate New Products utility having a desktop shortcut. Only CMFI and CMSF2 have them....going forward I hope they all will at some point. It was a special request of mine when we were working on Rome to Victory. I also have two disks, on is fast SSD with windows and some games on it. Other is large SATA disk. I guess the main difference is that I'm an 'IT guy' myself One question: why do you install the games in on C:\sims\? I used to do that as well long time ago, but programs are supposed to be installed in the \program files directory and since windows has been more active with security and permissions, that could be one explanation: some sort of under the hood permission violation. Howler Posted May 29, 2020 Share Posted May 29, 2020 FWIW, I was able to install on a new Win10 (v1909) three month ago in a non-default location (C:/Games/Battlefront/CM*). @Erwinhas mentioned in the past that one of his CM gaming systems was Win10. There remains the remote possibility that his newer version of Win10 (2004 - May Update) somehow breaks the install. I haven't been following too closely so I may have missed where this was already confirmed to be a non-issue... But, my IT guy and Shrullenhaft didn't think that would be an issue. May try it if all else fails. The question is how "new" is the latest version of windows and its associated security? Yeah it shouldn't be a big problem in theory. But don't know under which user windows is installed, who created the folder, what permissions Erwins user has, etc. With Vista (iirc) I walked into strange problems with the 'virtual store' about similar reasons. Not sure if that's still a thing. Just checked, the '2004 May update' is actually very new. Windows says my device isn't quite ready for it yet, so I guess MS is still working on drivers etc. Could be a thing, but almost everything could be a thing ;-). Best would be if some logfile somehwere would point in the right direction, but those aren't always in the most obvious places in windows. Anyway, Schrullenhaft and Elvis will get you sorted probably; they are at least in the best position to do so. My point was more that in general I would advise to just install things where the OS likes it. That guarantees the most compatibility with OS features, securities, permissions, etc. When you know what you are doing, you can do it of course do all kinds of stuff but in general I'd say just stick to the script. The v. 2004 update is out and this is the "known issues" list, which is dominated with driver problems. I don't think any of them apply here to Erwin's situation; the closest being the Nvidia driver problem, but he can't be using the v. 358 Nvidia driver with his GeForce 2070 Super (too old to recognize/work with that new of a videocard). He isn't using a laptop to my knowledge, so the Intel video driver issue of v. 2004 also shouldn't be an issue (if he were using a laptop with both integrated Intel and dedicated video). I did an install to a 'non-standard' directory like Erwin and everything worked fine on the system I tried it out with (in addition to using one of the Start Menu replacement programs he's using). I did have Avast anti-virus installed rather than Windows Defender Anti-virus on this particular computer. As far as I know he is logging in with an 'administrator-level' account and he's added exceptions and/or temporarily disabled the Windows Defender Anti-virus. He's able to activate the license keys, but CMFB (the initial game we were testing) didn't show up in the Task Manager, which would suggest it is either crashing or it is actively being shut down by something (security software). Since this issue doesn't seem to want to solve easily, going with the default installation location would probably be a good idea. 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Howler Posted May 30, 2020 Share Posted May 30, 2020 When I *first* start any CM title - I get a black screen for ~30-40s before the main menu shows. From that point everything is fast (load/play). I put this down to a combination of SSD and Win10. BTW, Task Manager will show the exe to be not responding during that time. Only CMFI will log a 1000 error to Events. Interestingly enough... quitting and than starting the *same* CM title will have the main menu reappear instantaneously. FWIW, it takes less than 10s for windows to start once the big red button is flipped (aka powered off). Choosing CMBS, while writing this, shows on first start 25s (of black screen) and exit/restart shows 3s. CMBN tends to be consistently the slowest at closer to 40s. Again, once it's in the cache - all titles are under 5s. I'm not sure if this can be corrected/improved. I'd posted in the support forum and received no takers which I didn't take personally before moving on to actually playing the games. Perhaps @Erwinis struck by the same thing? It's disturbing that the games won't run on a brand new vanilla Win 10 machine that has had nothing else loaded except for the latest Win 1O S, MS Office, and CCleaner. Normally I load free versions of AVG (and Spybot for cookies), but was told that Defender was as good and maybe better re antivirus and firewall so have not (yet) loaded those.
