Window Access??

Recommended Posts

It's a good question. I'd imagine the answer is "Because it's too complicated to program." It would need "climbing through window" animations, for starters.

Mmm it's quite annoying having to go to back doors or front doors to sneak up on the boche. It would be pretty cool to be able to climb through windows too. That's if you haven't got any charges to blow a hole in the gable ends.

While lobbing a grenade through a window seems completely feasible, its harder to envisage a kitted out team or squad choosing to clamber through a window if there was a perfectly good door.

There might be different policy followed by special forces to gain surprise or savvy engineers following up dealing with potentially booby trapped buildings.

Modern admittedly but I'm sure based on hard learnt lessons

MOVING PAST WINDOWS

8-3. Windows present another hazard to the Soldier. The most common mistakes are exposing the head in a first‑floor window and not being aware of basement windows. When using the correct technique for passing a first‑floor window, you must stay below the window level and near the side of the building (Figure 8-1). Ensure you do not silhouette yourself in the window. An enemy gunner inside the building would have to expose himself to covering fires if he tries to engage you.

8-4. The same techniques used in passing first‑floor windows are used when passing basement windows. You should not walk or run pass a basement window, as this will present a good target for an enemy gunner inside the building. Ensure you stay close to the wall of the building and step or jump pass the window without exposing your legs

DOORS AND WINDOWS

8-8. Avoid silhouetting yourself in doors and windows

HASTY FIGHTING POSITION

WINDOWS

8-25. In an urban area, windows provide convenient firing ports. Avoid firing from the standing position, which would expose most of your body to return fire from the enemy, and which could silhouette you against a light‑colored interior background. This is an obvious sign of your position, especially at night when the muzzle flash can be easily observed. To fire from a window properly, remain well back in the room to hide the flash, and kneel to limit exposure and avoid silhouetting yourself.

There's certainly no good reason to blanket prevent truppen leaving a building via the windows. When a tank rolls into view with obvious HE intent, and the back wall of the building has no doors, but plentiful windows, the troops getting out of Dodge wouldn't want to use the door...

It's only a blanket ban because including all the factors introduced by permitting it in a plausible fashion would be a lot of work.

I recall someone once relating a story from MOUT training over on the CMSF board. Roughly, the guy said his instructor told them "Today I am going to teach you the proper methods fo entering a building through a window. After today I want to see you NEVER do this in combat!" ...or words to that effect. Apparently, its a great way to accidentally shoot yourself or shoot a comrade, get a grenade hung up on a nail as you're climbing through, get shot by an enemy as you're halfway through a window, any one of a dozen unfortunate scenarios. :)
