  1. This one isn't too smart and i guess falls under recon but one rule that ive always had in mind since ages back (like since a few CMs ago) is to remember to give units time to spot. Remember that one turn is just one minute and your men are supernaturally able to see everything. Imagine yourself canvasing a whole valley and how long it would/could take you to spot anything. Often i catch myself moving or operating on the assumption ive done my recon and checked what i should have but really im rushing and need to chill out. This is one of the main reasons im often happy to go over the time given for a scenario.
  2. Thanks mate. Didn't know there was a movie on it might give it a look
  3. I want to learn more about the attack on a Russian outpost on the Afghan border in 1993 during the Tajikistan civil war. Im finding it very hard to find a lot of information on it although I remember a few years ago when I looked into I didn't seem to have this problem. So I thought this would be the perfect place to ask if anyone can share some light on the event or send me in the right direction. Maybe someone who is better than me at Russian (a.k.a can actually speak it not just pretend to) will know more or be able to point me to some sources as I expect there would be a wealth of info to be found on it in Russian. All help would be appreciated, thanks.
  4. Just gonna throw a log on the fire here to keep my curious mind warm a little longer. New RAND article on Baltics talking about other ways of deterrence: http://www.rand.org/pubs/perspectives/PE179.html?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=rand_social
  5. I dont know, i had that thought too but then looked a few more times and started to doubt it. I cant see any similar landmarks and these guys seem to be in a less urbanised area. Just my two cents
  6. I spent a decent chunk of time in Wellington NZ. People from there would go on and on about how beautiful and pleasant it is when the wind is down. The wind was never down.
  7. She's a beaut, anyone have an idea of whose/which mod it is?
  8. @kraze Is that a vehicle skin mod you're using?
  9. I don't think so but everything should spot better when unbuttoned. Have you noticed any different?
  10. That would be great to see. Although it would be quite a big ask to have them remodel everything. Maybe a modder will pick the idea up.
  11. said article: http://www.airpower.maxwell.af.mil/airchronicles/aureview/1985/jan-feb/nelson.html
  12. @Bozowans Thanks for that. Damn I would not want to be those guys, just reminds you that talking about war and playing wargames is fun and all but you would never want the real deal. At least with a lot of cover you might have some hope of hiding if everything goes fubar.
  13. Please excuse the double post, for some reason I can't edit my post from just before again. I found this article about Soviet Helicopter tactics in Aghanistan from '85. It mentions the new "nap of the earth" approach.
  14. At the least they help them defend to some extent? Oh and here's the link Duchess was referring to: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/inside-the-air-war-against-isis-60-minutes/
  15. Wow they are flying seriously low: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCuLQ_sc-C4#t=30sec I've seen that Ukrainian video before, I think its quite old. They must have shat themselves in that moment when they start falling I don't envy them. What's interesting in that video is that even though the poster says there were no survivors of the incident if you keep watching after its crashed you'll see the camera move a bit and hear what sound like gunshots. perhaps one of the crew getting away or rebels shooting to ensure no survivors? Edit: Could also just be noises from the wreckage, i have a vivid imagination
  16. Burnt This thread has slowly taken over my evening entertainment programme, who needs TV. Kuweires offensive? http://english.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13940624000469 Edit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuweires_offensive_(September_2015–present) - the wiki page. I know its wiki but still as long as you keep that in mind it can (emphasis on can) be a good source of info.
  17. Really? Its gonna take a lot more than a week mate. Edit: unless we're thinking of different things, just realised maybe you were thinking about a particular situation on the ground not the whole mess
  18. Thanks Steve. My thoughts were along the same lines I suppose the point is its just as beneficial to put little effort keeping it a mess so long as no one is able to completely exert their influence and no great threat is posed further afield then to try the more demanding approach of creating and maintaining friendly, stable, regimes. Russia definitely has more interest in seeing a more stable situation develop given its ME bases and the threat of competing pipelines going through Syria to Europe. I doubt even they would be pushed to commit many more resources unless their proxy hits a terrible losing streak perhaps.
  19. If I may ask, what far greater, more "core", interests does the US have in Ukraine as opposed to Syria/Levant? I'm not saying you're wrong I'm just curious as to what you see as the US interests in the Ukraine situation other than containment of Russia? I don't mean to say I'm oblivious to the US having interests in the whole Ukraine saga just inquiring as to what is it that makes it much more important than the middle east since you likely have better insights I haven't thought of.
  20. Yet another interesting article from you John, keep them coming Here's one back you may find interesting on the "Hind in foreign service" from Air Vectors. It has an interesting mention of Syrian Hinds in use against Israeli operations in Lebanon but doesn't elaborate unfortunately. http://www.airvectors.net/avhind_2.html
  21. @Codename Duchess thanks for the informative response, much appreciated I get the feeling that that is his point really. I doubt Russia would want any serious commitment on the ground either for the same reasons. Its too costly an option for realising their interests in the region when other options seem available. Both Russia and the US do not desperately need a "functioning state" in Syria as both have their interests adequately protected (perhaps Russia a bit less so) in the current state of affairs, so neither will make the huge commitment to resolve the crisis and make one.
  22. I like these videos, reminds you that there's actual people In those tanks who can make a mistake just as easily as you can break your bumper on the driveway fence.
  23. @TAKODA wow thanks for that links, heaps of awesome photos that aren't familiar. Since it seems this video is old, does anyone happen to know where i could find a version to see it? My curiosity kicked in and the link is no OP's longer available.
  24. @BarbaricCo Awesome trailer, feel like there should be a whole film to go with it haha
