Reassessment of Italian Combat Prowess
fatehunter replied to John Kettler's topic in Combat Mission Fortress Italy
Historiography naturally tends to shift in perspective over time. We called Alexander 'the great'. The same individual today would be regarded as the most evil, genocidal dictator ever experienced. The unfortunate reality of WW2 is not that the Italians were trounced every time, but that they were on the losing side. The Dutch, and Belgians were trounced too, but being smaller and less relevant countries, and eventually on the winning side, they are little discussed by historians. Frankly the Dutch and Belgians consider themselves to have heroically stood up to Nazi aggression when the invasion finally happened. -

http://www.i-am-bored.com/bored_link.cfm?link_id=83828 reptilian shapeshifter. It's true, I saw it on the internet. At the end of the day courage is irrelevant. Yes, I understand the desire to undo a stigma, but the fact is the victor writes the books. -
A great WW2 photo repository

This is great. Notice how many of the afv barrels have covers on them? Interesting bit of realism there. -
Hello you grognards out there. I recently had an encounter between a US M8 armoured car and a pz 4 (first scenario KG Engel). The M8 got three shots off with its 37 mm M3 gun into the side of the pz 4. The angle of the shots, measured from a straight on side shot, was at about 30 degrees for the first shot, increasing to about 60 degrees for the last one as the pz 4 turned towards the m8. Interestingly all 3 shots penetrated but caused no lasting damage. The encounter ended with the pz 4 taking out the m8. I don't have any concerns around the reality of this situation, more I was just very surprized that the side armour of the pz 4 was that weak. I would love for some observations from any of you more informed persons than me about the pz 4. How weak was the side armour really? I am starting to find that the pz 4 cannot handle any real shots, and consequently I play them very carefully, treating them like a glass knife. I

Why can't I see those guns?

noob, is a 7.5 cm a medium? or are we talking 5 cm or less. -
Hello, I was curious about the 7.5 cm pak 40 disassemble time. It currently takes a little over tow minutes to set-up the pak, but over 4 minutes to limber it again. Is this correct? I watched the following video and it seems 2 minutes is correct. [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Humt7tWvRc] Any one with towed AT gun experience?

Now here is a realistic description of what is being simulated. Soviet tanks fired on the move for the 'scare' factor. If they hit something, great. My father spent time in Indochina with the 2e REP, (strangely enough, willingly) and he recounted the volume of fired laid down just to keep enemy heads down with little likelihood of actually hitting something. But it keeps their head down while your outfit moves. Thanks JasonC

Help: I need to figure out the compass
fatehunter replied to A Canadian Cat's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
consider it a directional orientation device, not a compass. I work with magnetic and gyro compasses all day. They can be very confusing. -
City fighting, what are the isssues??

It looks to me like a lot of the arguments for commands etc are to create management of the tac AI, because players do not like the tac AI behaviour or consider it less than desireable. I think the way to go is to make a smarter tac AI, not micro-manage it. With improvement the tac AI can become more intuitive so that it satisfies your requests. The last think I want to do it become more bogged down by individual commands. The best would be if I could simply send a squad in a certain direction and they would always do the right thing. That would perhaps take away some of the fun of a well played action but it would definitely become more of a tactical game, as opposed to a 'did I put the orders in the right order and did I give sufficient pause' game. -
Vanir, Big question here in that we need to isolate exactly when this happens and if it is only related to the indefinite pause command or if it is also with the timed pause command. Did you test it with a movement order and then a pause? I.E. if the tank has a movement order, then a 30 sec pause and then another movement order, does the firing that occurs during the 30 sec pause suffer the same consequence? i guess the way to test this would be to give a long times pause followed by a move command.

I've never seen the bow MG fire in any of the tanks I use. The co-ax fires, the main gun fires, the .50 fires when unbuttoned. Is this similar to the aft MG on the M3 half-track that does not fire? just too difficult to model? I noticed someone comment that they thought BF was probably happy that the M# Lee tank is not modeled. Imagine a T-35!
