  1. It's just a disc in a plain case, not really worth it. I was expecting the same sort of fancy box as CMBN (with slots for future modules) and felt just a bit tricked since there was no mention anywhere that it wouldn't come in the same sort of case (while costing just as much, if I'm not mis-remembering). I guess there wasn't any mention that it would be a nice box either, so meh. Regardless, just burn it onto a disc or something and save yourself the cash.
  2. I think the Achtung Panzer guys are doing a Khalkhin Gol game in the near future. So, not quite CM, but could certainly be interesting to see that theater brought to life.
  3. I've had it on my Kindle Fire for a long time, works just fine.
  4. Cool, I got an SIII a few weeks ago and never even thought to try. Will have to give it a whirl.
  5. He also said they would never ever go back to the Mediterranean, and then boom CMFI. I absolutely loved playing as all the various minor nations in CMBB. It's entirely understandable that we won't see that kind of variety of choices again, simply due to the higher level of detail in CMx2, but it would be great to see a few thrown in at some point. Even if in a somewhat limited amount like the Poles and Canadians in CMCW. Having a few basic formations for Romanians/Hungarians can open up a lot of room for mods/scenarios down the road.
  6. Time to toot my own horn. Search my name on the repository for a pack with quite a few good ones. Some were a bit lower resolution but too cool to pass up.
  7. I've only played a few "big" scenarios and it tended to peak once most of the units were in action, then steadily declined as units were knocked off and less orders given. It's been while though so I might be mistaken.
  8. Give it a try, you might be surprised like I was. For single player I go RT, but for multiplayer it's far too hectic. It's quite enjoyable to come home from work/school and relax by loading up a big scenario and spending 30 minutes plotting out moves and thinking about your strategy. Different strokes and all, but give it a try. With H2HH and dropbox there's very little effort required beyond setting up the match.
  9. I would of course love to have fire units, but only if the fire (plus the smoke and what not) doesn't bog the framerates down. The game already chugs a bit when it comes to urban and other dense terrain where you would see flamethrowers in action.
  10. I definitely like a good story to go along with any scenario, it adds a lot of flavor to things. I think that explains why campaigns like Devil's Descent or the German one in the CW module are so popular. You actually see your units as unique entities with their own little stories, instead of just "Infantry Company #2 attacks generic enemy position."
  11. My #1 pet peeve in campaign mission briefings is when the briefing doesn't make it clear whether artillery assets for this mission will carry over to other missions or not.
  12. Bridger15, are you the same Bridger from the Tales of Tyria podcast? If so, it's pretty cool to see you popping in here. I listened to a lot of your stuff for Guild Wars 2 when it first came out.
  13. I think I remember this one as well. My favorite scenarios are always the smallish ones with oddball forces like that. Often (for me anyway), having a whole platoon of tanks can be much less interesting than having just one.
  14. 25 here. Got into CM when I stumbled upon the CMBB special edition in some gaming store a long time ago. Getting that game along with 1000+ mods (with easy to use mod installer software) and seemingly unlimited scenarios all packed into one little box for $25 (I think) really spoiled me.
  15. Project Reality is what you are looking for. It's a mod for Battlefield 2 that can take a bit of work to set up, but is entirely focused on realistic tactics and communication. You will quickly get the boot if you don't play along by the rules. Another option is ArmA 2, which plays a bit differently but same basic idea. I believe there is also a Project Reality mod for ArmA 2, which I haven't tried. Also check out Red Orchestra 1&2 for realistic-ish WW2 action.
  16. Even if the game doesn't calculate the shot until the gun fires, the AI should still register that "Hey, we're aiming this gun right at that hill, I don't think this is going to work." I know mortars won't fire if they are right up against a building (and maybe trees?), so there is some sort of system in place for this, just needs to work better.
  17. I don't think CMSF had this feature ever. They put in back in for CMBN after much wailing and gnashing of teeth (maybe, I don't really remember).
  18. I just play on Warrior as the gameplay is essentially the same as higher difficulties. I don't see how making the UI more annoying adds anything to the experience. Having generic infantry icons is pointless since you can click on any enemy unit and see exactly what it is. The spotting of friendly units thing is silly as well since there isn't friendly fire or anything, plus you always know where they all are anyway.
  19. I'm so excited about all the games coming out next year, but sad that I will have little to no time available to play them. I'm wrapping up pharmacy school, which means one more semester of brutal classes, then I'm off for 9 months of rotations. It will probably be well into 2014 before I get a chance to really dive in. I also managed to get someone to fall in love with me recently, which I've discovered eats up what little free time I had available before. I guess on the plus side, once I finally have time to play, I'll be able to afford picking up every single game and module available. So much CM goodness all at once might overload my brain though.
  20. I will tempt the forum gods and save others the inconvenience. http://www.redorchestragame.com/downloads/manuals/Reading_Sources_Nov_06.pdf Nice find by the way.
  21. It's fun and very challenging, but almost feels like a puzzle game more than a wargame due to the large scale/short number of turns. There is some room for flexibility, but it seems that for most scenarios there are only so many "correct" moves to make if you want to capture all the objectives on time. I guess it just depends on what sort of game you are looking for.
  22. Thought some of you guys might really enjoy this article over at Rock, Paper, Shotgun. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/11/16/interview-james-sterrett-professional-wargamer/
  23. Only getting one side of the story here. Amazon may be at fault, or they may totally justified in their actions. Still, it is worrying to think of how little control we have over our purchases from digital sources like Steam and Amazon, etc.
  24. It's not really dumbing down, it's just a different system. It takes away some of the flexibility but at the same time forces you to commit to a decision. You can't just creep across the map one step at a time. This creates a constant flow of hard choices, especially late-game when you have all sorts of synergistic abilities that you have to use effectively or get slaughtered.
  25. I'm loving it, but I can see where you're coming from. The first time it drops to $30-35 I would snatch it up regardless, it's one of those games that's pure fun as well as really challenging. In regards to multiplayer: There is no campaign or anything, but a skirmish mode where you can use human as well as alien units. You get X number of points and then spend them on various gear, upgrades, and experience. I haven't tried it but you could spend a lot of time coming up with different teams of units and strategies.
