I finished the campaign now (well "finished"). I played the first 4 historical scenarios, which were excellent. I then started the fifth one with the Italian tanks and then decided to do the historical thing and call off the offensive. My reasons for that:

I started in cramped setup zones under direct observation of two large hills, without any such terrain feature on my side even though we supposedly are coming down the mountains we took earlier.

There was pre planned defender artillery placed in front of those setup zones: NEVER DO THAT, LEAST FUN THING EVER

The only tanks capable of taking out the enemy tanks at reasonably long ranges were north of the river, where I am forced to attack a reverse slope defense at close range

The southern setup zone was basically useless because two Stuarts that I can not take out at range except with a lucky artillery hit cover all exits. I could only advance out of there if I clear the northern bank first. Despite that, big infantry reinforcements come in down there, further cramping everything up for artillery.

When in addition to that an enemy plane showed up, I cease fired and ended the campaign.

If the point of that battle is to show WHY they stopped the offensive historically then well done, I guess, but not very fun and feels like a waste of time. Still got a Total Victory for the complete campaign, so I guess it is part of the plan?

Yeah, you're right. That battle 5 is something of an afterthought I added almost at the last moment, plus quite implausible even for a semi-historical scenario. Although it must be said, again historically, that the mountains around Calavorno were not in the hands of the Axis at that time, the bridge representing the furthest distance they were able to cover in those days.

Pity you stopped there, because then there's a battle 6 which is more (semi-) historically accurate and should quite fun...

Sorry, don't know how to help. The files are in a public folder in my gdrive.

Hopefully @Bootiehas added them to his website... If he hasn't yet, I'll send you the whole package privately.

Anyone else having the same problem, just drop me a line.

Not sure if this is even fixable, but one "Italian" mg crew member glitched into the terrain at the edge of the house and can not be taken out, but is still fired upon by my guys, contesting the objectives. Doesn't surrender either, basically holding up the entire scenario:

Uhg, must be one of the quirks of the game with this kind of terrain. One of my platoons was once stuck for no reason. Wouldn't move up or down. I had to split it in teams to get it going...

Wow. That looks amazing and focusing on such wonderfully off the beaten path units is a fantastic idea.

Thanks! Next on my list is Op. Fourth Term from the Buffalo soldiers side.

Yes this looks great, some of those views are fantastic.  Thanks for the hard work.  Also might be worth loading up at FGM @Bootie will help I'm sure.

Thanks! I felt CMFI was missing some of the forbidding terrain features of the northern Apennines

This looks awesome, might make a video series about it. I took the liberty of "skipping through" the campaign (don't worry, didn't look at the enemy deployment in any kind of detail). Some questions:

    Thanks! Cool idea!

  5. Wintergewitter in Garfagnana, 26 and 27 December 1944

This is a historical / semi-historical battle series nearly three years in the making that includes 6 scenarios aiming to reproduce some of the events that took place along the Gothic Line in the Serchio valley, northern Apennines, on 26 and 27 December 1944, known as Battle of Garfagnana and referred to by the Germans as Unternehmen Wintergewitter, Operation Winter Storm.

    All modules needed.

This is not a campaign in the true sense. You will proceed to the next battle regardless of your performance, but your core force will still suffer losses as it progresses through the operation.

The six battles in order of appearance are:

    1. Sommocolonia

    2. Bebbio

    3. Vergemoli

    5. Ponte di Calavorno

    6. Fornaci di Barga

    eleqQli.png

    IMPORTANT NOTE:

A huge thank you to @kohlenklau and @boygarvin. This battle series MUST be used in conjunction with their mods “Partizani-Buffalo-Alpini” (tagged), included in the zipped file.

The three mods used together change German Panzergrenadiers to Alpini, French free troops to Italian Partisans and regular US white-only troops to segregated black troops (the Buffalo Soldiers). If you don’t use them you will have French soldiers standing in for Italian partisans, and that’s a huge no-no in my world!

    Any comments appreciated. Enjoy!

Dedicated to the memory of my grandfather Euclide Magnanini, who chose the right side, last one on the right portrayed here with some of his partisan pals (well okay, and to my great-uncle Giuseppe, zio Pino, too, who chose the wrong one, not portrayed here).

1 - I am shocked that Italy has done so little compared to its GDP. If they have supplied items, it has either been very little or completely off the radar. There can't be that many pro-Putinites or I will have to scratch it off my bucket list

Italy has had one of the worst Putin problems with its political leadership of probably any nation in Europe.  Italy's far right and far left parties hold enormous power in Italian politics and both are are in Putin's pocket.  If you have the stomach for it, you can read this article:

    https://www.politico.eu/article/italy-russia-love-affair-no-end/

    Steve

    That's a pretty good all-round summary.

I.e. there's definitely a pretty varied group of pro-Putinites among the political elites in Italy, who are are posing as pacifists for their electorate but are probably secretly pro-Russia as they fear financial support (always denied) would probably suffer (or their personal interests) if they opposed the war actively.

But I don't think there are many among the population at large supporting the Russian invasion in this country on moral grounds. Maybe there's a small cluster on the far left who are nostalgic of a strong (Communist) Russia. Don't forget that the Italian Communist party had 40% of the votes in this country in the '70s. Maybe 2% now.

Russofiles, yes. Maybe a few on cultural grounds and a lot more due to economic / business ties. The tourist industry is perhaps the 3rd or 4th largest in Italy. There are many restaurants / hotels / supply chain operators that are crying out loud for the government to do something because they will have to cancel orders for large amounts of champagne this year. I've seen Russian-speaking customers regularly pay €2000 in cash for a meal. They were good business for many a sad restaurateur...

Since I am also curious about the state of play of the slo-mo "Potemkin" offensive against Slovyansk, I went back over the last 90 pages of this thread (only 15 April!) and pulled out some of the key assessments made by our esteemed experts. All hail and praise unto them!

    1. @The_Capt scans the terrain for the Izyum axis (page 532)

    2. @Combatintman maps out the potential axes for a 'pincer' attack (page 548)

    3.  @Haiduk confirms the attack (page 553)

    4. @Kinophile shows us vividly how exposed are the northern approaches to Slovyansk (page 556)

    5. @Combatintman revises the axes in light of the actual Russian advances (p557)

    6. @Combatintman estimates RA force strength around Izyum at 16 BTGs not the 22 advertised

    7. @The_Capt floats the interesting hypothesis that this is a 'look busy but don't bleed too much' offensive.

    8. @Haiduk updates the actions around Izyum as of 23 Apr (p593)

    10.  @The_Capt assesses the state of play: "using BTGs to try and find a hole in the UA defence instead of a recon screen"

    11. @Haiduk's latest update, noting RA gains in contested Zarichne village and a flanking operation at Yampi (which has netted them some UA prisoners)(p.610)

    12.  This....

Outstanding. This post should be made into a separate forum thread and "pinned"! Thanks!!!

  8. In the scenario editor, I'd like to have an "Unrestricted" option in the field for date and region (and any other restricting option), so that all services, nations, formations, specialist teams, vehicles and whatnot appear and can be selected in the main screen when choosing units for a fictional scenario.

In this way you don't have to go back and forth a million times to get French troops to fight in Northern Italy, for example, or that special vehicle, or airborne or Kriegsmarine unit you want for your scenario. Not everyone of us is a TOE expert.

(Sorry if this has been mentioned already. Repetita iuvant, we say)

According to the info posted by Steve earlier in the thread, Battlefront will still release CMCW in April. The Slitherine release, which includes Steam has been delayed to June, as Slitherine want to test their MP system. So if you buy it from Battlefront you get the game earlier and you can get to test out the Slitherine multiplayer service before it is officially released. As I understand it the game is otherwise finished for release (or very, very close to release).

Ah, didn't know about that. Another good reason for purchasing directly from BFC.

... And after release we've fixed thousands of bugs, ranging from typos in text ...

And some of the "typos" are quite endearing. I love the quirky wording on some Italian tombstones in CMFI. I always get a good laugh when I find one :)

If you need an "Italian tombstone betatester", I'm here!

The Italian audios, on the other hand, have always been spot-on in all of your games. Good job

To expand on the $$$ aspect.  Our customers have the freedom to NOT buy something made by Battlefront.  What they want is to be happy with their purchase.  If they don't think something will make them happy, they don't purchase.  Therefore, if Battlefront wants to stay in business it has to keep people happy.  Which is why we make decisions based on how many people we can make happy.  A nice side effect of making people happy is we make money :)  It's a win-win for everybody.

The tricky bit for us is balancing customer happiness with profitability.  Sometimes we make games that we know won't sell as well, but the cost and risk is lower so profitability is still acceptable.  On the other hand, sometimes we avoid making games we think will sell well because the cost or risk is too high.

The reason Battlefront has survived for 20+ years is we refuse to risk more than we can afford to lose in any one release. We are wargame developers, not gamblers.  So when we look at making a game that will take 2 years to do, we had better be assured of making enough people happy to pay us back for our time.  Otherwise no more Battlefront.  Our confidence that an early war game can do that is low.  We've got plenty of better "bets" to make with that amount of time.

    Steve

I've read somewhere that TW Three Kingdoms, which is set in China, sold one million copies in its first week on Steam. That's approx. U$70 million in five working days!

CM Korean War would be a clever choice. ;)
