  1. In CMX1 I played scenarios that represented japan and some of the battles. I recall mods being made to make the game look correct.

    So, if someone gets creative, there might be some Scenarios made of battles in the front

    That was a kickass mod for CMBO. Loved it. They also had a voice mod in Japanese, the maps were terrific. Most of them tropical island scenarios with beach landings, fantastic.

    I too feel this cmx2 engine would be perfect. I'm very sceptical of it being suitable for Bagration 44 with the vast open spaces and huge tank battles of the Eastern front.

  2. Are there *any* "two-level" games out there in which tactical combat is set in a broader context?

    WeBandofBrothers are about to start one by using RobO's great Quick Campaign generator in a team event (unimaginatively) called Mechanized Operations. (Dieseltaylor mentioned it earlier and helped with the testing)

    The player is a tank company commander on the east front in Russia, South, June 1944. His company fights over several battles under the command of a fictional regiment commander who assigns him tasks. Favor points are gained by winning a game, or performing certain missions as described in ROQC.

    No campaign map is used but the event is set in a broader context in that losses in one battle are accounted for in the next, team spirit is encouraged (as you belong to a battalion within the regiment) and some sort of narrative is followed.

    ROQC cleverly uses the QB generator in CMBB to cut through all the tedious accounting performed by GMs between one round and the next.

    ...but when we get to WW2 I want to have HUGE epic 5000 point battles like back in the CMBB days.

    Is that what we should expect for CM:N? I guess you have info on this, just asking. Will we really be able to play full regimental battles on huge maps with CM:N, just as we did (well, I still do) wit CMBB and CMAK?

    If CMSF is anything to go by, I'm afraid we'll have to cut down the scale a bit. Am I right?

  4. I was wondering if this system has ever been used for a team event or a tournament. We're thinking of doing it at the WeBoB, but are wary of possible pitfalls along the way.

    The idea is to have a 3v3 match over perhaps 3 rounds with a core force sheet generated for each participant. The winning team is the one having the highest favor points cumulatively.

    I've been playing with RobO's system extensively in SP, and it should be easy to adapt it to a H2H team event with maybe a few tweaks on the side (e.g. no bonuses, of course).

    Can you think of any other? Do you think there could be problems? Anyone?

  5. Sounds great. Been waiting for a while and will wait till the end of the world (12/12/12 in case anyone missed it).

    One aspect I'm just a tad worried about - as a PBEM player - is the loading time of scenarios and the weight in terms of MBs of email files.

    My PC is not the latest hi-tech and it takes about 2/2.30 mins for every CMSF turn to load. Plus I'm uploading and downloading 8/9 MBs files every time - pretty slow-going with my connection :-(

    Not a game breaker in itself but it certainly makes PBEM cumbersome (for me at least).

    Is the system going to be the same for CM:N? (sorry if this has been asked before, haven't found it in Winecape's great synopsis :o)

    I haven't mastered the art of predicting the future (yet). I just answered the 1st poster's question whether I would abandon CMBB in favor of other games. My answer is no, in case CM:N has the same faults/qualities as CMSF.That's all.

    I make no claims to knowledge of other people's choices, or the intention to be negative about future BFC games. However, I think I am entitled to express an opinion, just as anybody else (in the free world). What do we have a forum for?

  7. I'm still pretty much addicted to CMBB (and CMAK). I have a number of PBEM games going on right now, and thanks to your efforts (great list, thanks again) am following events throughout the war with all those fantastic scenarios out there to try.

    Never taken TOW seriously after trying the demo (required too much effort to learn a new system, plus don't like the RT thing), so I didn't buy.

    I have CMSF and all its modules. I love it, but was never hooked. I play it H2H with my 8-year-old son. We both like all those cool war machines, the explosions and special effects.

    I'm pretty sure CM:Normandy will be great, but if it has the same editors and QB capabilities as CMSF I doubt there will many scenarios to choose from in the short term (not to speak of campaigns); so I'm afraid it will be short-lived.

    Frankly, I don't see myself switching to anything else than CMBB or CMAK for "serious" wargaming in the foreseeable future .

  8. I don't know how the Close Combat campaign system works, but I've recently been playing Simcity4. Not a wargame, of course. In it you have to build cities inside a region. The region is made up of several boxes (some bigger than others) where the cities grow, and you may interact with your neighboring mayor.

    I was wondering if such a system may ever be applied to CMx2 (or x3!) campaigns, where battles would be played inside a region which changes according to the result of a battle fought in each single box, troops moved from adjacent boxes and reinforcements had where they historically arrived (Cherbourg, or somewhere else by plane).

    well, just a puerile thought...

  9. Treacherously resurrecting this old thread while you Americans are digesting your stuffed turkeys.

    Interesting read.

    I side with the command-delay lovers. I've learnt the hard way in CMSF (WeGo) that giving precise commands at every waypoint (esp. area fire, pause and smoke orders) is critical. I understand this is realistic in modern warfare where assaults are planned second by second, but what about WWII?

    I would expect troops to hesitate, blunder or outright disobey orders more frequently back then, especially when outside the command radius. It would make my (grog-)playing experience much funner!

    What is the result of your ponderings some 9 months later?
