  1. Doesn't anyone have a Dad or grandfather they could ask? My dad was in the Navy, my mom was in after D-day but as a nurse didn't have much MG experience! (and no smart remarks!)
  2. I'm not sure if anyone has said it, if so I missed, but range and scientific conditions on accuracy and rof go out the window then the guys are shooting back and you are also not trying to be sitting target (ducking and peaking, bullets zipping past and around you.) My one time I was ducking behind the vehicle tying not to get shot rather than standing and ripping off a mag at the full cyclic rate. Even sustained three round bursts were tough! Not that I disqualify the argument mind you, just that I think everyone is comparing book and range statistics rather than what happened in combat under fire. My semi-unscientific assumption being accuracy and ROF go out the window when you are getting shot at.
  3. Thanks. I've beem avoiding bare patches in the grass thinking they may be wet spots slowing movement/increasing fatigue. I think the tutorial is going to be where I experiment with all the terrain and it's effects regardless of casualities. Wish I had a good 'ol terrain effects chart!
  4. Hey guys, I'm having trouble finding a clear breakdown of terrain, how it looks and it's effects. Admittedly, I’ve only scanned the manual and index a few times looking for it, but is seems like it is not listed all in one place. You have to look at the editor section to see what the terrain looks like, then find terrain effects elsewhere in the manual. Am I missing a table somewhere that puts it all in one place?
  5. I've got it! Shooting a panzerfaust off will ignite the cash everyone in Europe is aparently secreting in their house!
  6. I know BF has been waiting for me to complete my annual evaluation. I just finished it, so feel free to roll it out! My golf game pissed me off and I've been stockpiling kitchen passes for months, so I''ve got lots of free time now!
  7. Generally as a game the graphics are better and the game operations are more realistic. With all the soldiers represented and rounds tracked, rather than a three man "figure" shooting all rounds and taking casualties, only those guys that can see something can shoot at it and you get to see the guys individually take casualties. Buddy aid was annoying at first but you do have to think about abandoning guys for the sake of the mission, which really is a realistic decision. It also nice to see a vehicle saved by a tree once in awhile when the round is tracked into it. To me prettier and more realistic are the deciding factors in the comparision of which is better. I'm not a fan of the whole desert-syria thing either, but it should tranlsate great into France '44. Some x1 features are missing like anti-aircraft fire and the cool vehicles stats page (but hey, how many among us hasn't been memorizing that stuff since we were kids!) , hull down command (which I always screwed up anway and had tanks wandering into the line of fire). Yeah the quick battle system stinks but that will be improved for Normandy. So instead I download scenarios and maps ain't a big deal since I like to play and let someone else do the work! So my verdict is heck yeah, it's much better, you're going to love it!
  8. I thought the same thing after my first experience with them surviving VT fuzes in the woods when calling it in the next scenario. I thought about calling a general strike in case there was a tree/airburst effect but thought even in trees 155 vt would be more effective. Something's letting survive this much better than they should, I had hits right over the position! Guess I won't know until I experiment a bit...Trying to finish the Dutch campaign before Normandy though. (and tree airbursts had better be modeled there!
  9. I noticed the gamerswithjobs review quoted BF as telling him they were releasing a beta demo down load "next week" which should mean the next seven day pretty well shot. But hey! The demo is better than nothing! I wish it had been today since my wife left for a friggin Royal wedding Party at 0300, I could have played all day with no gripes!
  10. Good point, I didn't think about the VT fuze sensing the trees and detonating that much further way.
  11. I've just played two scenarios where I've ID'd woods along the route of advance as a great place for ambush, have nailed it with artillery set to personnel (air burst), no other cover available and still had ATGM's pop up where I know they were peppered by 155's. It doesn't seem like they should have survived, maybe they moved there, but does anyone know if perhaps woods provide good cover against air burst, perhaps "general" (PD) artillery might have worked better? To late to save and experiment. Does it make any difference?
  12. Man, I'm just proud I installed a card all by myself and got it to work, so I'm definately no expert! I dropped every switch down to Fastest, turned off smoke and the game still crashed. Even tried two thumb drives to boost memory, no luck. Darn, wish I'd known that about Nvidia too since the last card fried and it was a perfect time for a switch. I'll talk to you in September so we can talk smack about the world cup, go Springboks!
  13. I'm with you, it may be the ATI card, by the 5 series as I just installed one up from a 4 series. I tried reloading all the drivers, but it didn't help. I think I might be able to pull off the Canadian campaign if I could figure out what exactly is causing the bug but there's so many variables I'm tired of saving and reloading. Best I could figure is that it's somehow linked to my tanks crossing a trenchline and ATGM's firing as everything else works fine when this is not happening. I guess for a real challenge I could try to win the scenario soley with artillery and infantry! I was visiting friends a couple years back near Edinburgh. Enjoyed the golf and scotch. I should have stopped by for a little hotseat CMSF and scotch!
  14. Hi Phil, if you see my post, it's pretty much same problem. Seems like we may have discovered a bug. I've switched over to the Dutch Campaign since the Canadian (and German with the 'fausts!) has been stymied. I was told to post the save file for evaluation. Hopefully that will last until Normandy!
  15. Hi Dan, installed the card a couple weeks ago, so the drivers were up to date. How do you mean change them? Go back to a later version? Use something else? Pardon my ignorance!
  16. Thanks, I'll give it a shot. It's a good excuse to learn something new. Maybe after that I'll learn how to PBEM!
  17. Thanks for the quick response. Roger that, not a super geek on the file sharing, but I'll get it to the point where it will crash, save it and send the file to tech support if that will work?
  18. Getting a strange, first time crash ever with SMSF. (Played since release, own base, Marines and NATO.) Because I've never had a crash before and it takes place only because of certain parameters, I do not think it's my hardware, but have listed it below. I think it may have something to do with a corruption because of saves, I'll explain below: I am playing Canadian Campaign, I think, the the Charity scenaria (Sorry writing at work, its the one with the WMD facility on the hill.). The game was running fine (at best, best and all other settings for best graphics), , but I started doing a bunch of saves experimenting with smoke trying to get my vehicles past the ATGM's on the hill. At one particular point (I think around 1.11) the game started to crash when calculating the orders, sometimes with "CMSF has run out of memory", more often with "CMSF has a problem and needs to close." Since I couldn't get past this point to continue, I spent a lot of time trying to eliminate whatever was causing the problem, I closed all other background programs (skype, torrents etc.), changed the game settings for speed, turned off smoke graphics - still had the crash. Since the game had been running without a hiccup until I had restarted the save a few times, I went back a few turns and tried replaying, but no luck, I had no crash right up until I get to the same point in my advance note: not time but specific point in terms of unit orders: I have a lot of smoke (two 155's and one three-60mm team) , two vehicles ordered to deployed smoke next turn, one inf plattoon advancing up a ditch, another clearing the town, tank platoon ordered to cross trench at a spefic point screened from ATGMsl by smoke. Not much right? but it crashes as soon as it tries to calculates orders - the Bar screen freezes without any movement in bar, it crunches for awhile with the "thinking mouse icon" and eventually closes. After experimenting by going back and replaying was able to make the game continue but only if I plotted NO MOVES, inf had been moving and working fine, so it seems to be linked to the vehicle moves, but the game has never had a problem with this before. Thinking the game save file might be corrupted, I closed and deleted all save files except for an earlier point with no problems, game played until I hit this series of moves. I have no save before the smoke screen so couldn't test if it contributed, but did have smoke being laid and deployed with no crash as long as nothing moved.. Since the game runs fine up to this point and always has in the past, I think that somehow I've created the perfect combination of factors (map, smoke, orders) to crash the game on my system. The confounding thing is I can't slow it down enought to not to crash, but I shouldn't have to go from best to "not fast enough to not crash" in one turn. I don't think that's it. ANY IDEAS? Thanks, Ray My system is: HP Computer Windows 7 premium 64 bit AMD athlon X4 quad core 2.6 ghz, 2mb up to 4000 mt/s bus 6gb ddr3-1066mhz SDRAM (3 DIMMS) 1 GB Saphire Radeon hd 5670 (recently installed a few weeks ago but game has been working fine.) I have the most recent version of CMSF for NATO, 1.32? (the one where the Germans don't have panzerfausts, so I am running our of scenarios to play!) I've played Germans and TF Thunder campaigns, also varous single battles under this version with no problems.
  19. I just want to know where I find the drink threads, I've been missing those!
  20. I am very interested in whether cover arcs increase spotting ability. I've only ever used them to set up fields of fire for hidden units. I've used "face" to have a non-hidden unit point in the direction I want it to observe. If cover arc allows quicker spotting and rounds downrange, I need to change stragegies!
  21. Speaking of survivability, I am wondering how the presence of side skirts/spaced armor effects HEAT rounds in the game? The standoff should effect the effectivness somewhat.
  22. No sweat, one of the things on my list when I win the mega millions is to commission BF to make a '39-'40 CM European Theatre Game,
  23. I think they just moved beyond the original game engine. They are to small to put in the time to do it. By the time the modules are all done, it's time to move on to the next generation. Maybe if they did it like CM Afghanistan using the SF engine...
