  1. "Target" actually seems to do that pretty well. As long as one of your guys see the enemy icon and you target it, the others will adjust their location to fire on it. Much better behavior with this in 1.06.
  2. Spotting seems to be done in pulses - a check every X seconds (constant checks on a huge grid would be an enormous CPU load.) With the new "enhanced" LOS system, they needed to make up CPU ground somewhere else, so it seems like they may have increased the time between those LOS checks. Who knows.
  3. I've been seeing this, too. Lack of suppression in general - those "hero" soldiers that continue to stand up and 'putt-putt' at the enemy while waves of fire are coming directly at them. I find myself often giving my troops "hide" orders to try and save those guys. I would rather have them go supressed than take casualties.
  4. Vincere, just take a look at the tech support forums - the sheer number of issues with the 8800 tells you that there's something up. It's great that one specific hardware configuration runs CM well with it, but it certainly doesnt have anything to do with "keeping up with updates." Everybody in there has done that.
  5. I've only played a little bit, but the scout action is great! Lots of tactical thinking early on. Will play more tomorrow. That map was a beast. Seems like it's on a whole different level of realism than other battles. Combined arms is a must in this one. [ February 06, 2008, 10:36 PM: Message edited by: molotov_billy ]
  6. Absolutely! Far and away, 1.06 is the update that changed the game from something that I felt had potential, to something that actually unlocked that potential. I do feel the my $50 was well spent with 1.06. Reasons I think that this update was so succesful: 1) The casualties I take, I finally feel like they are no longer the fault of the AI doing ridiculously stupid things. Whatever losses happen, I feel are a result of my actions as a "commander." Huge difference in terms of frustration. 2) Far less babysitting. It seems that with 1.05, I was pausing the game every couple of seconds to look over each unit and manually select targets. With the update, I choose the locations for my units and they end up making good decisions on their own about what to fire at, and are very prompt. I can now play company-sized scenarios without feeling overwhelmed with micromanagement. 3) As the result of the above two, and as a result of the huge number of tweaks everywhere else, I finally feel immersed in the battle itself from the time it starts until the time it ends. I haven't run into anything that has broken that sense of reality. Anyway, I'm sure with extended playtime we'll come up with more bugs and issues that could certainly be fixed, but CMSF 1.06 as it stands finally feels like a solid product/simulation.
  7. Reinstall is not necessary. If you do reinstall, going from 1.00 -> 1.06 causes only one issue - the hotkeys.txt does not overwrite, so a lot of the command stuff is broken. The workaround for that is to install 1.06 to another directory, or grab the hotkeys.txt from somebody, and manually overwrite your 1.00 text file with the new one. If your fresh reinstall is version 1.01, then there are no issues as far as I know.
  8. Sorry mike, I meant I removed my paragraph because it was probably just selective memory on my part So we're in the same boat on that one.
  9. What you're saying is - is there a way to start the campaign about midway through - not through a save, but through a mission? I don't believe so, unless there's away to unpack the campaigns. (?) Two other things - the campaign is broke in 1.06 right now. Enemy unit starting locations have been shifted for some reason. Also - wait for the fix, and start the campaign over, because 1.06 is a far superior thing to 1.05. Completely different game.
  10. What was the reasoning? *edit* selective memory! [ February 06, 2008, 01:23 PM: Message edited by: molotov_billy ]
  11. A "1.06" should be on the bottom of the main menu, at least with the BF version of the game.
  12. Ok, so it looks like the problem is that when you do a fresh install - a more limited version of "hotkeys.txt" is installed with only a couple of commands. (Hide, target, face, quick move) When 1.06 doesn't overwrite this, the ordering is wrong and nothing seems to work right. So I guess the hacky workaround is to install the patch to an empty directory and grab the hotkeys.txt file from there and manually overwrite the old one.
  13. Ok, so something is amiss. Every previous version seems to have overwritten the hotkeys.txt file. What I'm running is a full re-install of the BF.com version of the game with only the 1.06 patch applied. The patch says "all-inclusive", so I assume that I don't need to install 1.05 or any other patch first. Anyway, the menu says 1.06 ingame and I see all of the 1.06 features.
  14. So, it looks like there are only a couple of options for binding keys to commands in 1.06. In 1.05, I bound a specific key to each command, and the game plays a lot better for me this way. It doesn't look like there are slots available to bind specific keys to specific commands, except for a small number at the end of the hotkeys.txt Am I correct in that this feature has been removed? Is there any way to bind a key to each command? I changed a couple that are available, but they do not work in game. The keypresses aren't activating any commands. I'm realy hoping that this is just a bug!
  15. I don't know about the 8600, but the 8800 has some serious issues with CMSF. My 8800 at work (which is a quadcore!) runs the game terribly - my 7950 at home with much lower specs has much better performance. You might want to look in the tech support forum for any other video cards that you might want to avoid. It doesn't look like BFC or NVIDIA have any plans for fixing the 8800 issues. 16. So as far as AI plans go - I don't know. I honestly generally don't notice when a scenario has a lot of extra plans, or any extras at all. If AI plans are a big chunk of time in terms of creating and testing a scenario, it doesnt seem like a huge payoff to have a bunch of fundamentally different plans - especially when such a thing would make effective playtesting so difficult (so it was too hard - which plan did you play? "I don't know", etc.)
  17. I generally only restart a scenario when I feel that I've been cheated by the game - a bug, or an AI mistake, or whatever - anything that breaks the "illusion" in a sense.
  18. f'd by the low wall bug on mission 1. I'll try again with 1.06. Looks promising so far
  19. Yeah, it's been brought up before. Both a fast speed (dull moments waiting for air/artillery) and a slow speed would be helpful features. From what I understand, it's doubtful as an addition to this engine.
  20. Which I think is the exact reason that we get a target light command! I've used Javelins against single ATGM gunners in specific situations - and I prefer to make that decision as the player, and not have the computer attempt to make it for me. There are too many variables for an AI to effectively judge every specific situation. I do think the M203 should be shifted into the "light" category of squad weapons. 21. Do the sounds work in game? My directory tree looks like this: C:\...\Combat Mission Shock Force\Data\version 444\<sounds and bmps etc>
