  1. "New unit types including Commandos, Anti-Air, Artillery, Anti-tank, Tactical Bombers, Strategic Bombers and Destroyers" I can only hope these units are meant for tactical level scenarios not the grand campaigns.
  2. "Luck sack win by HR over Legend." Well that is...to say the least, inaccurate Rambo operated west for a turn 2 attack of denmark and LC while keeping enough troops in poland to get the job done. But he allowed the poles to regroup near Warsaw and moreover 2 polish corps survived at str 1 each which delayed him quite a long time - but he took poland just before russia would have begun to raise an eyebrow His problems were not in Poland but in Denmark He took Denmark in turn 2 and delayed LC for one more turn. The allied armada poised to get norway noticed that Kiel port was not defended not even by a cruiser and decided to postpone operation Norway - instead commandoes seized Kiel and blocked the strait with a ship. After that, the kriegsmarine was wiped out by the combined anglo-french navies. Copenhagen was empty as well and Rambo operated an AF which was hit for 3 turns by the uk army and finally killed. Some bad rolls indeed occured for him - 2 of them in poland and 2 in france but nothing really that upsetting. He got his share of luck as well - his subs dived several times and one managed to stay alive in koeningsberg after the polish army hit it for only 1 str point (from 2 to 1 ) -oh, that sub was killed later ofc Ah and in december 39 he already had lvl 2 tanks He gave up after losing the AF in Copenhagen during early 40 (march i think). I strongly believe that not luck was the main factor here - allies will certainly not miss such an opportunity (to kill the german fleet) if axis leave Kiel undefended.
  3. again this history vs balance stuff... guys, the game starts from a historical date, having historical OOBs (more or less) but then, it is up to the players to change the history! And not all of it - for example, no matter what you do as Axis, you will have to face Russia - this could have been avoided back in the 40s IRL, who knows? So some of the actions you do are preset in accordance to some historical facts - some others, you can change... Personally, I like to play a balanced game especially in H2H - otherwise I get bored in 2 days
  4. buying 2 bombers (perhaps an italian one as well) it is a good tactic vs GB but those mpps spent on bombers (and perhaps bomber tech) will make you weaker in russia (think that is 6-7 upgraded corps you're missing there) and if you're slow to capture and kill things in russia, the commies will get very strong eventually. Perhaps if you plan to knock out GB completely and play more defensively than usual in russia, it may work, who knows - it depends on the level of the opposition - if you play against the AI, it works 100% - if you play against a top dog, it won't work so well
  5. maybe but when axis capture EVERYTHING, gibraltar, west africa, mid east etc...malta effect still kicking? This ain't ok - no way the UK can supply anything in Malta with every tile axis controled
  6. Hellraiser (Axis) vs Lars (Allies) started a while ago - going a bit slowly because we decided to PBEM it. So it is on average 2 turns per day. It's June 41 -> Axis went the aggro route, i.e. Vichy, Spain, Tunisia, Algeria, captured Alexandria and are reorganizing their troops for the final assault on Cairo. Iraq joined Axis some turns ago. Brest (which previously was left alone due to Axis having other priorities) was captured last turn. Some naval battles occured near Alexandria-Suez -> axis lost a it. cruiser and the Bismark, Allies lost - I don't remember, Lars will tell you. Everything went pretty standard for Axis, aside for the egyptian campaign which started very late and Malta really did a huge mess to the supply, its effect kicking every turn like a bomber was parked there not a freaking corps. UK even managed to kill off a german army in supply <5 In return they lost a tank, army and corps. I will have to take a short break because on Wednesday I leave for Germany. Game to be resumed most probably on Monday. [ April 17, 2007, 03:05 AM: Message edited by: hellraiser ]
  7. 'Intel level 1 gives you a 1% bonus on research' if an enemy nation is ahead in that particular research field. The problem is not with the 37 mpps but the fact that it eats up some 75 out of your 750 research cap - i'd better put it in IW or AT.
  8. From my experience with strategy games (where certain luck factors are involved) if you get lucky at the EXACT moment you need to be lucky, you win...or at least increase your chances tremenduosly. It is not something related only to the gaming world, it's just life -> remember those great battles/wars from history - almost every time luck (which is, in other words, one or a streak of favourable and unexpected events) and randomness played quite a role. A good and able commander was indeed great if the gods favoured him as well (gods = luck ofc ). I know Terif's theory about luck from the days of SC1, which I didn't agree to back then, as I don't agree to it right now. SC2 indeed reduces the effect of luck because, as Terif correctly noticed, there is far more real estate to trade for time. But it only reduces the effect not eliminate it. A thing that I fully agree is that the more you play an opponent, the less luck will matter as far as the aggreggate score is concerned. Because one side get lucky now, perhaps the next game the other side has the luck - so indeed it kinda cancels out and after some games you can draw a conclusion: X is a better player than Y. The phrase 'luck don't matter in the long run' doesn't hold -> what long run if one side gets uber techs and rape you in 2 years? OTOH, if you reached 1943-44-45 and things are balanced, it maybe because luck has evened out and perhaps the skill of the players are pretty close (the 'happy' scenario). What Terif does, and everyone should do if it is needed, is to try to compensate the effect of his bad luck (overinvesting if the techs don't come, for example) - which is basically common sense, a feature that mr. Yoda was born with Everything matters in this game: common sense, knowledge of the mechanics, strategy, tactics, luck >>> a blend which makes this game so enjoyable after all
  9. the game looks very nice and apparently the mechanics are quite well implemented - yep, I will surely try this...I was a huge fan of the old Close Combat series, so a realistic WW2 real time game, definitely interests me.
  10. Nice!!! Hopefully we'll have that realistic ww2 rts I've always been dreaming of
  11. ND is right - upgrade only LR, never bother with jet tech - they will suck vs land based air big time even if upgraded. Spotting, hitting naval units, softening up garrisons prior to D-day, are examples of their use. They are uselful but no way near the uber carriers of SC1. Which is normal after all.
  12. I am not sure the description is correct -> Stalingrad has to be axis controlled as well in order for them to claim a major victory. In some older versions, you didn't have to get Stalingrad, if I remember right.
  13. Reporting result: Hellraiser (Axis) wins against Preusse (Allies). NIce game, GG mr. Preusse -> guys watch out for this guy, some more tcp sessions for him and he'll start kicking your butts
  14. TO my knowledge, the major victory conditions are Berlin, Rome, Paris, Moscow, Stalingrad, London
  15. bug - it was reported several times but it seems it resurfaces now and then - frankly I haven't encountered it at all in 1.06
  16. Summer 43 Axis Major Victory! 9 axis airfleets rain death over London and german paratrooper jumps for the win! What happened meanwhile: The Western Allies intensified their efforts in France/LC, managing to cut off several times the iberic link but failing to get any more cities - they held 3 cities in Europe: Paris, Brussels and Essen. Occasionaly they paid visits to Frankfurt - punk ass british paratrooper kept jumping in the dark Several axis armies and corps died for the Fatherland in west. By beggining of 1943, Axis assembled a huge army in Germany, Marseilles and Bordeaux, planning once the weather turns ok, to throw the allies into the sea and capture LOndon in order to secure a major victory. Things went exactly as planned - tons of troops coming from the queue were positioned for the upcoming offensive. When weather allowed full scale operations, 9 axis AFs opened up on the western allies and axis ground forces wiped out armies, corps, AFs, everything that they could find Some HQs and troops + AFs managed to escape to England. In Russia, Axis kept a formidable force of 6 tanks, several armies and corps around Stalingrad area with firm orders to halt any offensive the reds may initiate - nothing came their way but instead russian forces kept hammering the mid east german-italian army group, slowly pushing them to Baghdad - who cares about those arabs anyway In a last effort, 6-7 red infantry units recaptured a town in the north-east of Moscow but it was all too late... After wiping out the US-UK circus in LC/France, the airfleets moved in range of London and in 2 turns all was over for the free world - paratroopers secured the last prize: the city of London itself!!! The RN and USN were pretty much wiped out as well, all axis submarines alive (as well as some battered surface units)inflicting pain and diving much to the despair of the allied commander. Partisans ran amok in russia, yugoslavia, etc - I really was too lazy to contain this pest and Preusse tried a nice partisan game of cutting off various locations Nice game and a good performance by Preusse, given the fact that this is his first '39 game online.
  17. October 42 German troops capture Stalingrad, killing Voroshilov inside. Axis spearheads threaten to cut off the red caucasian task force. In west, axis re-establish the link to western France and Spain, cutting off 2 uk corps. One corps sitting on the german mine killed, mine recaptured. German reinforcements from the queue take positions in western Germany and Marseilles. The Luftwaffe is being currently restrenghtened and upgraded - they will soon receive new missions.
  18. Late August - September 42 Allies manage to destroy a S-line fort but cannot push into Germany too deep - instead they get Paris and try to cut off the link to Spain. Still no strong german presence in West - Russia has priority. In Russia, the remnants of red troops defending Stalingrad area are destroyed or flee. German armoured spearheads reach Stalingrad defended by 2 HQ and a tank in a fort German diversion in Caucasus pay off - some red troops operated to defend the area...despite that, german raiding corps destroy the oilfields. No sign of allied vessels in North Atlantic, subs raiding big time.
  19. Allied raid in LC turns out to be a real D-Day after all judging from the amounts of units sent (US troops as well) - Allies capture a german town but germans reply killing the paratrooper. Allies besieging Paris. Axis commander is quite relaxed - 10 fully upgraded troops are coming out of the queue by Dec 42. In Russia, the commies mount a counterattack killing 2 german corps but exposing very valuable units so in return, Axis forces devastate the red attackers - 3 armies, 1 corps, 2 tanks destroyed and Rostow captured. German forces from Iran ordered to advance into Caucasus. Meanwhile, near Ireland, axis fleet sink what can be still found nearby - battle is almost concluded in Axis favour unless the Allies find some more ships to throw at the wolfpacks. German subs are kings, they dive like there's no tommorrow
  20. August 1942 German troops occupy positions on the S-Line - Kleist, paras, army a tank and some corps defend the area. Germans destroy the first fort near Rostow. The naval battle near Ireland continues, Axis sinking some more stuff plus Bradley HQ in his yacht. Let's see the allied reply.
  21. Last turn of July 42 -> a huge naval battle errupts north-west of Ireland - great losses on both sides but apparently Axis have the edge. In Russia, a huge army assembles in front of the heavily fortified Rostow-Stalingrad Area - such force hasn't been seen since the times of Genghis Khan... In the same time, allies try something that they call a D-Day British paratroopers descend from the skies and capture the german mine...a powerful and upgraded british task force liberate the LC giving those guys a false sense of freedom... Adolf wows to react swiftly to these ridiculous attempts to break the solidarity of the european people... [ March 10, 2007, 01:55 PM: Message edited by: hellraiser ]
