  1. It's a great addition to the CM community, especially for those who are new to the game. Is there any way that you could make the articles more printer friendly?
  2. Since Philippe's point was that everybody who voted had already read the threads, I saw no need to post a link to them. I'm surprised that you did not do so yourself, if you thought it was important. However, since you didn't, I'm glad to do so. We'll let everyone decide for themselves whether or not the quotation I posted was taken out of context. http://www.battlefront.com/discuss/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=23;t=010379 http://www.battlefront.com/discuss/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=23;t=010438
  3. Philippe, thanks for your suggestion, but I repectfully decline your offer. Here is why. No vote is very meaningful unless the people voting are informed about the facts. I do not necesarity share you assumption that everyone who will vote here is familiar with two other threads, at least one of which is very long. I did not post the opinion of just anyone or of anyone merely taking a position on this issue. I posted a direct quotation of what the makers of this series of games have said. If Battlefront posts other information on this issue, it also will be helpful to have here at the polling place. That is true, regardless of which side of the poll, if any, it can be viewed as supporting.
  4. Here's the post from Battlefront that supports my opposition to massive use of half squads. Put simply the game system (the tac AI especially I suspect) is not designed to deal with this "technique". Battlefront said: "Remember that CM is not real life and therefore unanticipated things tend to undermine the system because balancing elements are simply not there or are not balanced correctly. It would be nice if things just magically worked as they would in real life, but that isn't what happens. If both sides play with all their squads in halves... it is more even, and in some ways a little more realistic. On the whole though it is less realistic than if the squads were kept in one piece. The reason is because the game was designed around the principle of the squad, and therefore there are some things that simply don't work as well when faced with tons of half squads. The reason for that is CM was never intended to work that way. Since we didn't intend it to be, we did not program it to be. And if we did not program it to be, chances are it can not be. For those of you who have coded any type of application that is used by lots of people, you know what I mean. One of the unrelenting rules of software is that the closer the user is to the one in the developer's head, the better the software will perform its intended functions. The opposite is true. Good developers are the ones who anticipate or restrict user actions and program accordingly better than others in their field. And the more complex the program, the better the developer has to be at it. Inherently, however, it is still software and it can still be broken through unanticipated user actions. Swarms of 1/2 squads were not anticipated, ergo the sim will (in some situations more than others) not function as intended. For us we have never been surprised that people have found ways of doing things we never thought of or actually spent time trying to prohibit. Nope, the surprise is how little of this there has been over the years in relation to the complexity of the scope and subject matter. In this case, we're not surprised people found a loophole with the half squads in certain situations... we're surprised it took 5 years to find it Steve"
  5. I would object. By using this technique you are, in effect, changing the base infantry unit in the game. In my view that is gaming the system.
  6. Is anyone interested in doing a hi-res (that's standard these days, I suppose) whitewashed version of the British A/Cs and/or the Jacksons?
  7. Panzermartin did an early mod (11/02) of the Pz 38t. The one you used may have been his.
  8. FJ were still fighting on the Eastern Front in early 1945. The newly formed and understrength 9th FJ Division was deployed outside Stettin on the Baltic at that time. It (or what was left of it) ended up in Berlin defending the Fuhrerbunker. In early 1944 the 2nd FJ Division was in action in the Novgorodka and Kirovograd areas.
  9. J2D--I checked the GD site and did some other checking. As a result, I plugged a few holes and determined that some of the winter mods are fall camo uniforms and not winter white. However, there appear to be two sets of German uniforms body BMPS (and I assume the parts for the rest of said uniforms) that are missing. That is, I have original BF (2001) body BMPs for these units, but no winter body BMPs for them. Further a BMP search at CMMODS for these BMPs comes up empty. They are: 1. Airborne-set 3 (body BMPs 59225-28) [original BF BMPs 9225-28] 2. Unknown set {I could not find these at GD site} (body BMPs 59062-64) [original BF BMPs 9062-9064] Can anyone shed light on this?
  10. Thanks J2D. With some jury rigging and folowing through on your suggestions, the only missing winter units for 1/43 are the German SS Pioneers, including the FT team.
  11. In (and around) 1/43, the following German winter mods appear to be missing or incomplete: 1. Luftwaffe--all types 2. SS Infantry--all types 3. Mountain--arms remain grey instead of white camo
  12. I keep a BU of the BMP and WAV files for all three games. But my CMBB BMP BU had some age on it. Thus I knew that I had not overwritten any original BMPs, but thought that I had overwritten winter mod BMPs (which in small part I had).
  13. This morning before I had my first cup of coffee, I made the mistake of adding a CMAK winter mod to my CMBB BMP file. I have been able to recover all the original CMBB BMPs that I had overwritten, except for four, which are the following: 59564 through 59567. Does anyone know what these are and where (e.g. what mod and/or mod of what) I can find the elusive four BMPs? Thanks!
  14. It sounds interesting. But I'm not sure how you would do it, as early war French armor is not a part of CMAK
  15. Thanks J2D--I had almost forgotten that Andrew often packaged more than one set of goodies in his fantastic uniform packs.
  16. I have completed my search for missing winter mods through the end of 1942. I was unable to find any more missing winter mods. I was missing the winter Valentine III, but was able to pick it up at CMMODS. I noticed one odd thing about MikeyD's mod. The storage bins on the tank are not whitewashed. I'm not sure if the modder intended this effect or if it was an oversight.
  17. Thanks to Daffy for his suggestions and insight. I found some of the CMMOS gun BMP base numbers that I did not have and added them. Bottom line with reard to 11/41 winter mods that are missing (excluding AA/Flak barrels referenced above): 1. German Heavy AT Rifle 2. Romanian 25 mm AA gun Also I saw very few early war German Heer winter mods. Perhaps this is becasue the Germans generally used makeshift and captured winter clothing during the first winter on the Eastern Front. [ January 21, 2005, 12:15 AM: Message edited by: KG_Jag ]
  18. Thanks--I did not catch the second page of the German mods. However, if memory serves, I downloaded all of these mods when they were first posted. After stripping them down to their bare (non CMMOS) BMP number, I put all of them (both German and Soviet) into my BMP file. If so, I should already be covered for all mods that appear on the link provided by Daffy. The second point is that I recall these mods were posted before any CMBB patches came out. My strong recollection is that some of the BMPS were changed when new units were added and some existing ones changed in patches 1.01 and/or 1.02. It is possible that some of the missing items may have been caught up in those changes.
  19. Thanks Daffy--the fix for the German 38 (T)E & G worked. However, none of the rest of the missing winter 1941 mods seem to be covered by CMMOS packs. All the CMMOS German guns are dunkelgrau and not grey. Turning to the Soviet gun download, these did not contain any BMP numbers that weren't already accounted for (unless I missed something). Therefore all Soviet guns on the list remain unaccounted for. The Italian and other mods are still MIA as well.
  20. Having posted this topic with regard to CMAK and CMBO, it's time to move to CMBB. I have been collecting mods for a very long time. During that time there have been crashes at CMMODS, the result of which have been lost mods. But the bottom line is that a number of winter mods for certain units never have and/or do not currently exist, at least as far as I know. Of course it is my hope that our talented modders will fill the gaps that we find. If any of the listed items have been modded, please post and let us know where each is, and under what name/category. Beginning with thw winter of 1941, I am surveying my harddrive to determine what winter mods are MIA. This will take some time and I may miss some due to the four geographic sectors that have to be checked for each time frame, as well as the existance of Axis and Alled minor units. Thus far I've found the following mods to be "missing": 1. German 38 (T)E & G tanks (my turrets are whitewashed and so are a few minor parts, but the rest of these tanks are not). [North] 2. German heavy ATR [North] 3. German and Soviet 37 mm flak gun (barrel needs winter camo) [North] 4. Soviet 76.2 mm M37/39 gun (only the gun shield shows winter camo) [North] 5. Finnish 40 mm Flak (barrel needs winter camo) [Finland] 6. Italian 65mm Mtn How [south] 7. Italian and Soviet 47 mm ATG [south] 8. Soviet 25 mm AA gun [south] 9. German 20 mm quad (barrels need winter camo) [south] I also do not get the Germans (Heer and probably others) in winter uniforms in the South. While I suspect that this is because I haven't installed the proper mod, I put it out there for the purpose of requesting suggestions with regard to where I can find a winter mod for these troops. Thanks in advance to all who help!
  21. Fry's in Austin had or has the CDV versions of both CMAK and CMBB (aka CM 2), although CMBB is/was made available by CDV in North America in the form of their Special Edition (2 CD) release.
  22. If you are doing training battles, don't forget CMBOs excellent tutorial created by Wild Bill Wilder. It might also be fun to duplicate the CMBO demo scenarios, although versions of both of those have already been done.
  23. Thanks Daffy--with the addition of the Sherman croc tailer, all of my units (I believe) have winter mods, except for assault boat. And I'm not sure it should have one, although what can it hurt? If any modders are interested, it would be nice to have whitewash mods of the British ACs listed above and proper hi-res winter mods for both versions of the Jackson.
