  1. No problems with Dell Celeron 600 with 8mb ATI video set-up and 128 mb of ram. It runs about the same or a little better than the desk top I originally put in on--Dell P II V350, with 8mb ATI Rage video card and 96 mb of RAM. However, I get little or no fog effect with both rigs.
  2. It's great to be a (North) American! Sorry guys--I couldn't resist.
  3. You have arrived just in time! The price for CMBO just went down. If you feel flushed, you can order both CMBO and CMBB for a combo price.
  4. I don't want to reargue the whole demo war again, but I am certain that at least 90% of us on this forum and at least 75% of those who download and play the demo will or have already bought CMBB. Even if this was only CMBO ver 1.12 taken to the Eastern front for four years with all the countries that were there, it would be a game worth paying $45 for. But it's more than that. I wasn't wild about the demo, but I will be shocked if I'm not knocked out by the full game. It's only after replaying Yelnia four times that the non-eye candy changes are beginning to sink in. I think the demo battles were designed to show off games changes, instead of game fun and excitement. I think both could have been accomplished with some changes, but we've been over that ground enough. For the most part Steve hit his target. The already much debated question is whether or not it was the right target. [ September 13, 2002, 09:06 PM: Message edited by: jagcommander ]
  5. Try some of the excellent scenarios suggested. After that--when you're ready, try some of the variety offered. By that I mean night, fog, heavy fog, rain, snow and mud scenarios. You might not like them all equally, but you'll learn alot and get a real feel for the game and maybe even a bit of history.
  6. In case it's not clear, most players define a vanilla Sherman as one with a 75 mm gun. The 76 mm is better against tanks. The 100 mm is very good against infantry, but sorry vs. tanks.
  7. It's on page 46 of my manual that came with an early version of CMBO, ver. 1.02 I believe.
  8. We middle age gamers are smart enough to know that the only way to keep our favorite war and sim game companies in business is to give them business--ours and any converts we can send their way. The same story seems to be playing out with guys like Koger, Tiller, Meier, Maddox and Grigsby. They have all gone to their own or small companies, or in Koger's case want to. Keep control, keep overhead low, put out an excellent product and take care of your customers. That's what all these guys and Battlefront apparently have concluded and try to practice (at varying levels of course). By the way, a number of very recent posts at Warfare HQ have been by younger (college age) gamers, who are just getting into wargaming. Specifically a number of them have shown great interest in CMBB and CMBO. Some of us grey beards have tried to encourage them. I even suggested to one of them that he check out the forums here. Hope that wasn't a mistake! [ September 13, 2002, 01:21 AM: Message edited by: jagcommander ]
  9. Thanks for the tips guys. Pulling the infantry back and putting them on reverse slopes resulted in a significant improvement. I moved my anti-tank guns to the flanks. Got good, if not dramaticly better, results. The anti-tank guns got one T-34, and gun damaged a second. My hidden tank killers bagged another. Most important, I held all three flags. The result was a 78% to 28% Major Victory agianst the AI. Now when I'm really good, I'll be able to win with the Germans in the tutorial.
  10. I believe that the panzerschreck and faust were knock-offs of American bazookas captured in North Africa. The earliest they could have been captured in 1942. [ September 12, 2002, 08:03 PM: Message edited by: jagcommander ]
  11. IL-2 is the best combat prop sim out there, bar none. This little company gave us two great expansions (ver. 1.1 & 1.2) for free. You bet I'll be supporting them with my purchase when their new game/expansion comes out covering Finland & Central Europe.
  12. I've played this scenario four times against the AI , three as the Germans. In none of the games has a T-34 ever been taken out. In every case I kept the anit-tank guns in their respective default positions. In my last contest, I kept my anti-tank guns hidden until they opened up on their own. I got two turret penetrations, but not even a single casualty from it. What are the best ways to set up and deploy the German anti-tank defense? P.S. extra points for answering the same question with regard to the Russian anti-tank guns in Citadel (with which I have have had more success). Thanks.
  13. Maybe you can do a Clarabelle Sturmtiger for us old guys who rememeber Howdy Doody. Or may even a Doody Destroyer (of tanks).
  14. Guess that helps explain the French automobile industry. Now, about those Serbo-Croatian tanks.....
  15. They probably got lost on their way to the collective farm, where they were to report for duty as tractors.
  16. Check cmoutpost.net -- they list mods on many of the leading sites and have pictures of each.
  17. I don't think that the lack of Soviet infantry had anything to do with demo size. The bmps were already there for the other battles. As the the anti-tank rifles, they are new but next to useless in Citadel. So, they must be included due to the first factor.
  18. I'd check in on a regular basis if such a forum were up. Thanks to Madmatt and Combat Mission HQ, I'm hooked on mods. They realy make CMBO look like a new game (not that there was anything wrong with the old one). Now if I could only find a high res Hummel and Nashorn for CMBO....
  19. The explosions machine gun chatter and the sound of near misses are great and add to the game, but are not nearly as important to game play as being able to hear the voices of your (and the enemy) troops. One thing in the demo that was changed from CMBO that I did not like is that those voices seemed to be miked down in comparision with the battle sounds. I hope that change does not carry over to the final version.
  20. One arguement that I just don't get is: that at least some of the folks who suggested different or additional scenarios for the demo were really just after more free scenarios to play with the demo. It has been pointed out before that almost everyone on this forum has already or will soon be ordering CMBB. The full game will have some 50 or so battles and operations. I have two full binders with summaries of mostly very good to excellent user created scenarios for CMBO. There is no doubt in my mind that this will be the same for CMBB. Therefore, why would someone take time to post on this forum just (or mostly) to wrangle an additional scenario from BF, just to play with the demo? Maybe I'm just too old (no--I am to old) and not part of the instant gratification crowd, but I just don't understand why getting the one more scenario to play in the demo would be a serious motivation for anyone on this forum.
  21. My old 8MB ATI Rage never supported fog (still doesn't) and needed a driver update before I could play any night scenarios. I love my 64MB G-Force 3. All effects and actions in CMBO, including the use of high res mods are great. The new G-Force 4s are undoubtedly even better. [ September 10, 2002, 07:58 PM: Message edited by: jagcommander ]
  22. It's good to see some discussion of the almost complete and final game instead of just the demo. Game Spot threw alot of flowers to BTC and CMBB. Too bad they've decided to become a (mostley) subscription game site, as not very many people will see this preview, when it goes to the pay side only.
  23. In the US everyone is entitled to one personal back-up copy--even of CMBO and [GASP!] CMBB!
  24. I downloaded them yesterday, and as always look forward to playing each of them. Danke sehr for the great work you and you partners have done on CMBO.
