  1. BFC. You have a responsibility. Dorosh is a monster. But he is your monster, you created it, gave it life, meaning, purpose. Now the monster has expelled from your garden of eden for eating of the fruit of the peng thread, and generally being a dick, it is terrifying innocent forums around the web. Containment & appeasement. OK, so it hasn't worked with China, Al Qaeda, Iran or the Gothic hordes. But it has got to be worth a shot
  2. Yeah, screw those civil courts. Next time I'm in a dispute, I'm just going to lock the other party away until they agree with me.
  3. Thanks for this state of the nation address. I've been pootling around with CM:SF, never got into it, but 1.07/08 are OK for me now red v red - I'm one of those who just doesn't enjoy the firepower/ spotting of modern blue forces. Still have philisophical issue with 1:1 modelling, when a team, rather than individual, is the unit of command, but that's water under the bridge now. To WW2 Commonwealth forces (and beyond!)
  4. Indian Army uses Brens as well. Many front line units have now meant to switched to 5.56 INSAS rifle & minimi type thing, but as the minimi type thing is having problems, there are also a lot of Brens still in front line use... Pakistan uses the MG3, so as recently as Kargil (1999) the Bren was up against the spiritual successor of the MG42. And the Bren equiped troops won that one too. Has there been any war that a Bren equipped army has lost? Case closed...
  5. Problem is that as english is a second language for so many, the vocabulary (for second language users) tends to get reduced. Genitals are a rich source of swearing (for native speakers) - e.g. twat, quim, dick. Viz's online profanosaurous isn't bad for those wanting to expand their vocab...
  6. Call me sentimental, but I always thought that Seanachai and MrPeng were too good for the Peng thread, that their rants sometimes touched the sublime. Or should that be the nadir? Still, when they go off on one, you can feel the hatred and the passion The rest of us wankers just mess around in towel-snapping japes, with both a spoken and unspoken heirarchy, only to mumble and fumble around if *gasp* a woman posts. Still, I went to a Good English public school, so it all fills me with nostalgia. Not so much to actually participate actively mind...! So, piss off or don't piss off Seanachai as you feel like. But cheers for the rants anyway. I enjoyed them. Merry Christmas, and Selamat Idul Adha to you all!
  7. Steiner. I would offer to have your babies, were it biologically possible!
  8. Sheesh, I may be an old fart who still thinks that an _ is an integral part of any filename, but, oh crap. Lost my train of thought. Most excellent Peng thread! This is what is about, meeting strangers on the internet and spewing abuse at one another! Never mind, all your dollar belong to us! (unfortunately...) Still, it was a nice trade while it lasted. China got to industrialise while selling crap via Walmart, and America got to buy crap in exchange for bits of paper. Still, got to love the chutzpah of fighting a war and going on a mortgage equity withdrawal consumption binge, promising unsustainable benefits all around (work out what a US civil servant's (especially uniformed) pension would cost on the open money purchase market, then realise it will be met from ongoing taxation. Hello Ponzi!) Not looking forward to the hangover though. At least in the 70's stagflation there was ABBA to get through the dark times... 9. Am always amused by Mr Joe Shaw's ramblings on, well, nothing in particular. As as far as I know, his sole claim to authority, and, indeed, sole achievement is that he manages to remain continent, until, oh, at least elevenses. Mmm, elevenses. An under-rated meal break.
  10. Em...ok. But read the sign in the shop first.. Hard to believe eh? Idiot! I don't have a lawn. But your welcome to piss on the pine needles, I do. </font>
  11. Sheesh. One has to come into the Peng thread to get civilisation around here these days. Huntarr and Sixxkiller out there on the outerboards are the gayest thing since sex between men. Well done on the fence Abbot. Aren't there some stumps that need pulling? In reading about people who enjoy hard labour in the West (well, OK, "SHANE"), stump pulling always seems to be a favourite occupation.
  12. Welcome. Abbott is sort-of-like the token pet redneck, like MrSpkr is the token/pet lawyer, and Seannachai, well, he is just a pet. When he's not a'token. Eek! Don't you Americans have people you can pay to do manual work for you? WTF is the point of open borders and mass immigration if you can't get someone to do this for you cheap? And the neighbours finally insisted you put up a privacy fence hey?
  13. Well, the scoring is sure loss tolerant! I reckoned I had done OK, having gutted a Stryker company, but still major defeat. The Man really wants that pass bad!
  14. Interestingly, the late Burma campaign (West Africans, Shan, Chinese, Americans, Indians, Nepali's, British, plus probably some more) the one thing that united an extremely diverse bunch, who had no love for one another, was a mutual hatred of the Japanese, because of the Japanese cruelty to captured troops. Fubar'ed up the Japanese hope of being welcomed as liberators of colonial peoples too. Were the waffen-ss known for their fighting prowess, or their spiffy uniforms...? Chicken and egg really. If you give some units top tier of recruits and priority for equipment, well, duh they will be amongst your more effective combat units. Whether you call them waffen-ss, or a shock army like what the Russians did (or RAF, which tended to get the best UK recruits)
  15. If a 20-50% difference in penetration capability(according to your figures) "isn't too different" then please o please o please can I have you sitting across the table next time I negotiate a deal? "we've just put the price up 35%" "oh, well, that's not too different, fine" ATGM = anti tank. I would guess AT3's were designed with M60's in mind. Bradley ain't a tank, it is an IFV. One surviving a second generation ATGM hit would be a surprise.
  16. Plus, remember that in the real world tanks have periscopes and sensor packages on those periscopes. So the tank crew already knows where the target is before they pop up and shoot. As an aside - this is why I am not that keen on modern (for gaming purposes) As Chainsaw says, 10sec is the maximum you should be exposed. If your opponent has overwatch, then even ten seconds may be too long. Modern minatures always seemed to devolve into "I swallowed a fly" chain reactions - any one you saw, died. But the act of killing it meant that unit got spotted, and died, and so on. Modern sensor packages & weaponry = one shot kill = fire>>manoeuvre = not a huge amount of "fun" at the CMSF scale.
  17. Also what I am finding is that with CMSF RT vs CMX1 WEGO, my control span is reduced. To co-ordinate a RT platoon attack often means the rest of the company is parked - or if I am being generous "placed in overwatch" - until the crisis is passed. This contributes to the increased time pressure.
  18. That... was fun! Shahrazad bought it in the end, as I was running out of time and was making a hail mary move:( When I saw what had killed her - LOL! Lots of surprises. Love the garages. SPOILER . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Sent one squad forward to spot, then did scoot and shoot with the tank, and used the ATGW to clear out active vehicles I could see. Lost the BDRM. The tank then pounded the roadblock. The GAZ and some irregulars I sent up the river bed. This was a mistake - took forever and hit some movement/pathfinding issues... Tank blasted a hole for them in the wall, but the squad I sent through was shredded in seconds. So tried the main entrance, tank cleared it fine, but couldn't enter... (a dead humvee messed up the pathfinding, whatever I did) Running short of time, sent the tank in via the breach. Only to find that was just a perfect flank shot... Think you need to keep the BDRM alive - need that 14.5 to help clear out all the vehicles. I'll try again with the same basic plan, but send the troops along the river bank, hope that is faster and less tiring. If I hadn't lost the tank, would have been a draw/ minor victory.
  19. Steve, tks for the reply - much appreciated. I am looking forward to see what people do with the scenario maker, I think the surface has only been scratched.
  20. Well, aside from Adam's flameout. My opinion, so far is in line with Dalem's good simulation does not imply good game. I'm playing CMSF, but to be honest, not really enjoying it yet. Maybe just because war is hell, and 98% boredom with 2% terror just isn't fun. This is a very subjective opinion obviously. But, yeah, leaving a platoon in place for 10-15 minutes in RT, watching tracer or waiting for arty to fall - realistic as it may be, is not, so far, an enjoyable use of my leisure time. Unfortunately I am back in HK, so golf is too expensive though... Can fun be patched in? Dunno yet. But I do find red/red more to my taste than blue/red, so when the engine move back in time to a less advanced/ lethal time, I trust it will turn out OK. I used to have the same problem with modern minatures, couple of times I played. Units spotted = units dead. Bah, give me napoleonics or ancients any time!
