1. How do you know if you hit the aircraft or not? If the plane doesn't come back can you assume you drove it off, or do they frequently just leave on their own. I rarely ever buy airpower myself, but when I have it has performed ok I guess. I'd imagine that there is a big difference in whether or not they attack your own forces between green and crack pilots right?
2. Just a note about that review link. The review is from October of 1999. You may want to look at a more current review before making any final decisions.
3. Recently I started buying: 1. Infantry 2. Arty 3. Armor 4. Support 5. Vehicles And if I'm defending I'll buy fortifications before Vehicles.
4. When I'm playing the Germans bazookas seem to come from every empty building, group of trees, or blind spot.
5. Another tidbit of info about Russian women in WW2. The Soviets produced the only women of the war that became fighter plane aces. Lieutenant Lily Litvak got 7, and Lieutenant Katya Budanova got 6 credited kills. In addition, there was at least one fighter plane unit that was composed solely of women. 6.
quote:
Originally posted by Keith: I support the idea of having Partisans in CM2. The fact of the matter is that on the EF Partisans frequently coordinated their attacks closely with Russian Army attacks. For instance, during the 1941 Russian winter counter offensive there were several battles where partisans, parachutist, and calvarly all participated in the same battle simultaneously.

When you said this it brought back a memory I had about playing just such a scenario in Squad Leader: Cross of Iron. It's been about 10-15 years since I played it, but I managed to find the old game. Sure enough, scenario 19 is the one I was thinking of. Here is the scenario intro: OKOROVOVO, February 17, 1942: Following the Russian winter counteroffensive, the Germans were forced to fall back to isolated pockets in an attempt to survive both the Russians and the weather. In teh resulting gaps, the Russians found useful employment for their cavalry in resupplying partisans. Occasionally, however, the Germans would sortie out from their pockets in an attempt to disrupt these Russian operations. On one such occasion, a recon element of the First Panzer Regiment broke up a planned partisan-cavalry operation, and frustrated their attempts to re-establish themselves in the town. The Russians reacted strongly and threw in the only immediately available reserve; an airborne drop by a battalion of the 204th Parachute Brigade. Soon the Germans found themselves in a wild melee with partisans, cavalry, and paratroopers. And the aftermath: Not surprisingly, the Russians had an exceptionally difficult time coordinating such vastly different troops and despite great gallantry by all concerned, the Germans were able to exploit their central position in the town and break up the isolated Russian attacks until an armored relief column arrived. Disheartened, the regular army formations broke off the attack and headed back for their own lines, while the partisans simply faded back into the woods. Now this proves both the points of those for and against the inclusion of partisans really. Such actions did take place between regular army Germans and Russian partisans, but I'm not sure it happened often enough to warrant inclusion in CM2. Personally I'd like to see everything included in CM2 that was historically involved in the eastern front, but this is the real world and that isn't possible. There have to be some things that don't make the cut in the end. Maybe instead of having special partisan units we could just use low quality rifle half squads or something.
7. I'll assume you're using a PC. 1. Press the "print screen" button on your keyboard. This saves the image on your "clipboard" 2. Open a graphics program (paint works fine) 3. Paste the image into the graphics program 4. Save the image
8. Could you add a "no preference" option to the place where you pick what your National Preference is in the join form? It really looks like you put a lot of work into this idea. I'm impressed! I hope it works out.
9. I voted! Of course, as a felon it probably didn't count
10. Ahhh, thanks for clearing that up for me Babra. It's amazing what I can learn on these boards.
11.
quote:
Originally posted by Forever Babra: VT stands for "Variable Time". It is a small radio emitter/receiver fitted to the shell's fuze. The emitter transmits a signal which is then picked up by the receiver after bouncing off the target. Using the Doppler Effect to determine distance, the device ignites the fuze and detonates the shell at a pre-determined range from the target.

Ok, now I'm confused. Wouldn't what you describe be a proximity fuse??? Variable time fuses used time didn't they?
12. I've tried it a few times but without much success. I'm not saying it can't be done or that you shouldn't try it out yourself, I just have not been able to make much use of them in this kind of scenario. On the right kind of map they could be very usefull I guess.
13. I don't really see why people complain about this either. 1. I rarely buy the big tanks, and seem to do ok without them. 2. If you don't want to play with them, fine, make that agreement ahead of time with your opponent. 3. Big tanks aren't the best weapon in every situation anyway. 4. I see people on this forum sometimes complaining that their big tanks got beat by the little guys that whipped past them and shot them in the ass. If people complain that the big tanks are overpowered, and others complain that they are underpowered, I'm guessing they are probably just right.
14. Why shouldn't a collapsing building kill infantry/knock out guns? Seems pretty realistic to me. What do you think would happen if a building fell on your head?
15. Re: sharp shooters targeting halftracks I've found that while sharpshooters happily target unbuttoned tanks, they won't target unbuttoned halftracks unless you tell them to. Not sure if this is a bug or if it is intended this way.
16. It sounds like a great idea. I wish I could help, but I'm just not knowledgeable enough on that subject

18. I can vouch for the toothpaste idea; it really works.
19.
quote:
Originally posted by Dittohead: This points out that the M-8 and other wheeled AC should be vulnerable to immobilization and critical hits from machinegun fire. As it is now mg's do not shoot at the M-8's. All it would take would be a chunk of rubber on the front tire being shot off and then when the M-8 tries to turn. The tire gets torn from the rim. Bingo immobilized.

I'm not sure I can agree with you on that. Maybe slow the M-8 down if you could take out a tire, but immobilization might be a bit of a stretch. Ever watch one of those "reality" tv shows like "cops" where a car loses a tire? It almost always keeps on driving, just slower. And that is a civilian passenger car with only 4 wheels. On M-8 is no doubt tougher and has 6 wheels.
20. Cool! I'm going to download it right now. Thanks alot Tiger.
21. If you zoom in you can actually see the demo. charge fly through the air a couple seconds before the minefield is cleared, IIRC.
22. The link that MikeT put up leads to a pretty interesting site. You don't see much written about the Japanese tanks of WW2. Japanese tanks did knock out some enemy tanks during the war, but they were always at a disadvantage in both armor and main gun effectiveness. An interesting battle is talked about at that website: "In April, 1945, the American forces had been approaching to the 14th Army HQ in Baguio. The only tank force that General Yama****a had was the 5th Company of 10th Tank Regiment. The company had 3 Medium tanks and 2 Light Tanks. As the Japanese tank could not cope with the American tank, General Yama****a ordered the company to carry out a suicide-attack by tanks. One Type 97 Medium Tank and one Type 95 Light tank were attached with two explosives in front of the hull. They hid into a bamboo bush near the road between Baguio and Sablan on which the Amercian tanks would advance. When a column of Sherman tanks turned the corner about 100m far from them, they dashed forwards the column. The leading tank of the column was surprised at them and tried to go back, but it failed to turn and fell into a valley along the road. Japanese tanks clashed with enemy tanks and four tanks(two Shermans and two Japanese tanks) burned up. The Japanese crews who survived jumped off a tank and run into the enemy position, brandishing a Japanese sword. After this incident, the Americans would not advance for a week." It also talks about knocking out a couple of British medium tanks in Burma. In other places it talks about armor vs. armor clashes but doesn't specifically say that Japanese tanks knocked out the enemy tanks.
23. I found "Come and See" on amazon, but they want about $60 for it. Anyone know where I could get this cheaper? Something tells me my local Blockbuster isn't going to have this one in stock. I read that one guy found a copy in his locla library, so I will try to check that option out too.
