1. Well, it's now a moot point since their is a confirmed problem, but here are the results of my tracked vehicle test anyway: I used 10 M24 Chaffee light tanks and 10 M4A3(76)W+ Sherman tanks. The M24 has a ground pressure of 10.1 psi and the Sherm has 16.2 psi. I used the 4,000 meter map with dry grass for terrain and had the tanks use fast move. Only 1 M24 made the trip without bogging. 5 made it to the end in total without immobilization. 5 Sherms made the trip without a bog and 7 made it total without an immobilization. In the end the lower ground pressure vehicles seem to do the worst in dry grass. If you play before this is fixed keep this stuff in mind when purchasing your forces. Thanks MadMatt for checking into this.
2. KwazyDog, I did the same test only at "move" speed (after redoing the number of turns in the game since 30 doesn't let you go 4km at that speed, heh heh). Five out of ten made it this time. I repeated and seven made it. One more try and six made it. So I'd say that lowering your speed to slow movement will definitely decrease your chances of becoming immobile in dry grass. The interesting thing here is that just as many vehicles became bogged, but at the slower speed they were able to free themselves. This seems correct to me, as hitting a rock/log at high speed would surely increase your chance of immobilizing your vehicle. It looks like MadMatt is on the case now, so lets see what he comes up with. I'm going to try the test with some tracked vehicles now.
3. Test #2 For this test I used 10 M20 vehicles. I set them at the end of a 4,000 meter map and told them all to go to the opposite end using fast move. The map was grass and conditions were dry. Turn 1: 2 bogged within the first 200 meters Turn 2: 1 that was bogged became immobile, the other free. 3 more became bogged. Turn 3: 1 bogged and then freed itself. 1 that was bogged became free and the other 2 remained bogged. Turn 4: 2 that were bogged became immobile. 1 bogged and freed itself. 1 other became bogged. Turn 5: 1 already bogged became immobile. 1 more bogged. Turn 6: Bogged 1 becomes immobile. Turn 7: 1 becomes bogged Turn 8: Bogged 1 is free Turn 9: 1 bogs and becomes immobile Turn 10: 1 more becomes bogged and immobile. The last 3 make it to the end of the 4km. So out of 10 M20 vehicles seven became bogged and immobile and three made the 4km trip. This still seems way out of wack to me. I'll put money on my old '73 pickup truck to make that same trip without ever bogging down. We're talking military vehicles that were made to cross terrain like this. This needs a tweak.
4.
quote:
Originally posted by Tanaka: "dry grass" It's here that your thought goes wrong... Even a rally-raid driver, knows when he goes out of the road on purpose, nasty things can happen. The green thing you see, it's not exactly grass... Try to think in the bogging action like an abstract way the game has to deal with any other accident that could happen outside of a road, like a flat for instance...

The terrain was "grass" and the conditions were "dry" that's all I was saying. I realize that "grass" contains some dips, small bushes, etc.. That doesn't explain this very high incidence of bogging/immobilization that we are seeing now. Don't you think a 5% chance of immobilization for 300 meters of movement is a bit high. Seriously, if you drove 10km a majority of your force would bog/immobilize. This doesn't seem realistic for equipment that was made to travel like this. I've done quite a bit of "off-roading" myself in real life. I was never bogged to the point of immobilization in dry conditions. Never! There should be a chance of these things, but right now it seems to be set way to high for "dry grass" conditions.
5. Ok, even Jeeps are bogging to the point of immobilization on dry grass now. I drove 40 Jeeps fast 300 meters on dry grass. Two of them bogged to the point of immobilization. It's not just a problem with Jeeps, as my other vehicles/AFVs bogging in dry grass is what lead me to do the test with these Jeeps. Is this supposed to be this way now? It's a bit too easy to happen for dry ground in my opinion.
6. I think I got a shotgun for Christmas when I was 14. I got a BB gun a few years before that. It all depends on the kid really. Some kids can handle that responsibility at 14 and some can't. If you think your kid is ready for a BB gun than give him one. Just make sure that you lay down strict rules and make it very clear that you won't put up with any nonsense. My brother couldn't handle his BB gun (he shot a neighbor kid in the leg) so he got it taken away from him for quite awhile. He obviously didn't get a shotgun when he was 14 either.
7. I think you may be right Samhain, bogging/imobilizations seem to be much more frequent now on dry grass with the new patch. It seems to be hitting armored cars more than anything else too. I am in a game now where my M20 bogged. Last night the computers M20 bogged and became immobile too. Both of these games are in dry conditions and it happened on grass. Addition: Now my M8 bogged down in dry grass. Something is screwy here. Time to run a test. I'll post my results when I'm done. [This message has been edited by Subvet (edited 12-16-2000).]
8. Have you guys all seen those lists that tell you about the people that are starting college this year? It's supposed to show you how old you are getting, heh heh. I think it was originally done by the staff at Beloit College in Wisconsin, but I'm sure others have done the same thing. Here is the one from '99: 1. The people who are starting college this past fall across the nation were born in 1980. 2. They have no meaningful recollection of the Reagan Era and did not know he had ever been shot. 3. They were prepubescent when the Persian Gulf War was waged. 4. Black Monday 1987 is as significant to them as the Great Depression. 5. There has been only one Pope. They can only really remember one president. 6. They were 11 when the Soviet Union broke apart and do not remember the Cold War. 7. They have never feared a nuclear war. "The Day After" is a pill to them, not a movie. 8. They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up. 9. Tianamen Square means nothing to them. 10. Their lifetime has always included AIDS. 11. Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic. 12. Atari predates them, as do vinyl albums. 13. The expression "you sound like a broken record" means nothing to them. 14. They have never owned a record player. 15. They have likely never played Pac Man and have never heard of Pong. 16. Star Wars looks very fake to them, and the special effects are pathetic. 17. There have always been red M&M's and blue ones are not new. There used to be beige ones? 18. They may have heard of an 8 track, but probably never have actually seen or heard one. 19. The Compact Disc was introduced when they were 1 year old. 20. As far as they know, stamps have always cost about 32 cents. What about 6-cent airmail stamps? 21. They have always had an answering machine. 22. Most have never seen a TV set with only 13 channels, nor have they seen a black-and-white TV. 23. They have always had cable. 24. There have always been VCR's, but they have no idea what BETA is. 25. They cannot fathom not having a remote control. 26. They were born the year that Walkmen were introduced by Sony. 27. Roller-skating has always meant inline for them. 28. The Tonight Show has always been with Jay Leno 29. They have no idea when or why Jordache jeans were cool. 30. Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave. 31. They have never seen Larry Bird play, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is football player. 32. They never took a swim and thought about Jaws. 33. The Vietnam War is as ancient history to them as WW1, WW2 or even the Civil War. 34. They have no idea that Americans were ever held hostage in Iran. 35. They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are. 36. They don't know who Mork was or where he was from. 37. They never heard: "Where's the beef?", "I'd walk a mile for a Camel, " or "de plane, de plane!" 38. They do not care who shot J. R. and have no idea who J. R. is. 39. The Titanic was found? I thought we always knew where it was. 40. Michael Jackson has always been white. 41. Kansas, Chicago, Boston, America, and Alabama are places, not groups. 42. Mickey D's never came in Styrofoam containers. 43. There has always been MTV I'd like to see what you guys here could add to this list. I'd add that most of them probably never went to a drive-in movie.
9. Screwed up the edit, here it is. Edit: I tried getting really close to the trucks (about 10m) and that seemed to make a huge difference. You can knock them out with one or two shots from close range. Still though, it seems a bit too hard to kill them at any realistic range with AP. [This message has been edited by Subvet (edited 12-16-2000).]
10. Well, I just went and tested this for myself. It's true that there seems to be a problem. I put 10 trucks on a map and edited a Marder III to only carry AP rounds. It took ALOT of AP rounds to kill just one truck. Pretty much every round was a hit too. It can be done, but it seems out of wack. It's harder than what would seem to be realistic to knock out a truck with a 75mm AP round. [This message has been edited by Subvet (edited 12-16-2000).]
11. I think maybe it's easier to kill soft vehicles with HE vs AP, especially with large calibre rounds. That's the way it was in ASL if I remember correctly. With a large HE shell you don't have to hit the target to kill it, but with AP you do, so it makes some sense. Now if you can't kill them with AP at all, that would be wrong.
12. It's nice that I'm a youngin in this game at 30 years old. I was playing a multiplayer online game recently and was told that there must be something wrong with me since I'm playing computer games at my age. I don't think that is likely to happen while playing CM.
13. I just played a quick battle with the new build and I like it! The use of smoke by my tanks is much more to my liking (actaully the LACK of use). The AI made a much smarter purchase mix with its combined arms force too. Where before it would sometimes only buy one halftrack with 1,000 points, tonight it bought a Sherm76, two scout cars, a Priest, and a couple of MG Jeeps. Also the AI seemed just a bit tougher than before, which is always welcomed. Bottom line: another good job guys!
14.
quote:
Originally posted by JunoReactor: Before criticizing NVIDIA as a monopolistic corporate giant remember that they were the first to market with a 3d accelerator.. Cant remember the name, it was a sound card and 3d accelerator at the same time.. had a few bundled games.. of course, it never sold. With only limited performance and a obscure API, it got no support.

I had a computer that used that card. In fact I still have the card in my desk drawer. It was made by Diamond and used the first 3D chip on a video card made for the home pc. The name of the card is the "Diamond Edge 3d." The support was HORRIBLE for this card. It cost a fortune too. The sound only worked in Windows, so you still had to buy a sound card for DOS games (remember this is back when there were a lot of DOS games still being made). I was so disappointed with this card that I didn't buy anything else from either Diamond or Nvidia until the TNT came out. Anyone want to buy my Diamond Edge 3D card?
15. I never really used these AA halftracks before so I thought I'd give them a try after reading this thread earlier. LOL, these things were a waste of points. American rifle squads took these things out at long range with ease. One was brewed up and the other knocked out within seconds of being spotted by American infantry. I'm not saying it isn't true about them causing havoc in the particular game that was talked about in the beginning of this thread. I just don't think that that is at all typical. They were useless in the game I used them in.
16. Also, I started a thread on their forum about this oversight. If you would like to add your comments to that feel free
17. Done. 274. By the way I'm voting from my home here in Palm Beach County! I made sure my vote was correct, so don't worry. [This message has been edited by Subvet (edited 12-15-2000).]
18. I read somewhere that BTS was going to put a bunch of these charts on the game CD originally. In the end the game took up too much space on the CD so that idea was scrapped. Now I'm not going to say I wish there was less game and more charts, heh heh. However it would be REALLY nice if BTS could post these somewhere or put them in a zip we could all download. I drool at the thought!
19. I don't know what to tell you as far as your lock up problems. I haven't had that happen at all with 1.1. Maybe try putting your 1.1 version in the same directory as your 1.05? This could help narrow it down. If that doesn't work maybe try downloading 1.1 again. Perhaps it was corrupted in your download.
20. Out of all the products Microsoft makes, I like their games and game hardware the best. They can keep their Office crap, but give me more games!
21. For those that say they will never play a game with a monthly fee to play: I hope you never plan on playing a massive multiplayer on-line game. I don't think you will see any games like this that will be free to play. Every single MMOL game that has been released that I've ever heard about is pay to play. How do you think these companies would pay for the game if they didn't charge you? Do you want an advertisement banner at the top of your screen while you play the game to pay for it? I'm curious to know how you would pay for it without charging the players?

Don't hold your breath for this one.

I think you're wrong there. Even if you're correct though, how would that prevent it from being a good game? Personally I would like to play on a U-boat, but that wouldn't figure into the 0% you think would play in the navy
