  1. For small unit action If You Survive: by George Wilson a Lt in the 4th Inf Div is good. For the view from a Private who became a Lt at he end of the War Roll Me Over: Raymond Gantter is great. His book was written from notes and letters that he had with him while in France and Germany '44-'45, so it has a freshness and intensity that other books written long after the war sometimes lack. Both should be available from your public library.
  2. Shadow 1st Hussars could you tell us some more about the book ....are the maps in color or B/w? Are they very detailed? Thanks in advance.
  3. the 240mm M1 came into service in May '43, was used "extensively" in Italy and later in NW Europe. Took up to 8 hrs to set up and weighed over 30 tons, so was only used when front lines were fairly static. Used by the US Brits it fired a 360lb shell. Went out of service in the late 50's though supposedly still in use in Taiwan. (source: Chris Bishop Encyclopedia of weapons of WWII.)
  4. I guessed as much but I wanted to be 100% sure Is this a joke? Are you just trying to get a laugh or do you really want to ..... Chinese are pretty prudish in many ways. If you want to make her burst out laughing with your crudity, you could say "ni yao da pao ma?" Lit. "Do you want to help me fire the big canon!" Being a military man you might like that one. Slightly more refined would be, "ni yao zuo ai ma?" copied from the West, "do you want to make love." More subtle would be to invite her to dinner at your place and then when it's getting late say "you don't NEED to go home, you know?" ... "jintian wanshang, ni keyi bu yong hui jia...." Of course, without explaining the pronunciation and most importantly the tones, it would be extremely unlikely she'd even realize you were speaking Chinese.
  5. Dorosh, I speak Chinese but can't speak French. Email me with exactly what you want and I'll be glad to help. BTW, the woman in question is from China or Taiwan? [ 10-23-2001: Message edited by: Viceroy ]</p>
  6. When you click on someone's profile you see an option to Add to your ignore list .... what exactly does that mean? If you click on that does it mean you never see their posts again?
  7. MajorH, I have ZA and Norton's on my W98 computer. Are you saying that ZA is all I need protectionwise and that it's better than Norton's?
  8. Problem solved Here was the advice from Gordon that fixed it, in case anyone else makes the same blunder as me! But the file "RuleSet901.exe" is still in the CMMOS main folder, right? Remove it or move it somewhere else.
  9. Highlife, thanks for the help, but I tried that twice with no luck ..... I still get the same error message. Anyone else have the same problem?
  10. Pascal, can you help me out here? I dl'd the files and extracted the 2 big files to the CMBO BMP file. The ruleset 901 I extracted to Gem software/ CMMOS but now it doesn't work. CMMOS won't start because it can't find the 901 ruleset exe. and 901 txt. What did I do wrong? All the PIV and PV etc worked fine. Thanks for your help.
  11. Foamy, I think that may be "known" casualties under the limitations of FOW. The 81mm doesn't normally inflict much damage but it does a nice job of disrupting an attack or supression. Mortars tend to inflict far more casualties when targets are in wooded areas. That's what they call treeburst.
  12. If your looking for some choice insults the BBC link below has some classics. My favorite was this one; "You sir, are not fit, sir, to stand upon the pile of dung which it has been the purpose of your life to excrete!" http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/uk/newsid_1579000/1579714.stm
  13. Dorosh, I'm no sure if this is helpful but Terry Gander in his book on Allied WW2 Infantry Weapons says, " tripods convertible into AA mountings" were available in 1939 but "gradually disappeared" during the war, rarely being used, "apart from a few special applications." Some tripods were retained until the '70's. He has a picture of twin Brens for AA use with twin 100 round drum magazines. No shots of any tripods though. AFAIK he is a well respected author on military weapons.
  14. Col_Deadmarsh, that would happen in Singapore ..... in China it would be a bullet to the back of the head
  15. Capitalistdoginchina, I teach English which is my native language. Know any Kiwis in Hualien? If you come over here don't go reminding people that they're a province of China .... it won't win you many friends
  16. Capitalistdoginchina, I'm in Taiwan, so it's kind of in my neighborhood Sadly, I won't be able to make it to Shanghai. I remember back in '93 the beer in China was really cheap and not bad quality. Hope that hasn't changed over the last few years. The beer in Taiwan sucks ..... but we do have the best tea in the world ... Wulong!
  17. Slapdragon, as a Bermondsey resident who used to eat the local Kebabs and Vindallos I can stomach anything even someone's ugly mug in the picture. Besides, I make it a rule never to eat anything while looking at this forum.
  18. Germanboy, I used to live round the corner from the George when I was a student in London. It's a nice pub. Hope you guys have a nice time and afterwards put up a photo of you all. Wish i could be there.
  19. Cromwell, I'd be happy to give it a try. I like playing Brits and rarely get a chance to do Para's.
  20. Kamelot, The Encyclopedia of Weapons of WWII by Chris Bishop is great value and covers nearly everything you will encounter in CM or CMBB. Only available at Barnes&Noble AFAIK.
  21. The Shorter OED volume 1 lists fuse and fuze as interchangeable. Fuse or fuze sound the same and mean the same. Hope this clears things up, at least for the Brit types
  22. Fuerte, could you explain to me how the "additional working folders" thing works? Also, I heard with the latest version it will put the turn files in the correct folder .... how do I do that? Thanks for your help,
  23. Col. Deaemarsh, you mean you're still at the opening screen for CM? You have to click on join multiplayer and then click on PBEM. A box will appear and you then select the correct game file. I hope that helps. If not there was a thread by Wincape that answered lots of questions about PBEM Helper.
  24. Just finished a PBEM game. QB with 4 VL's. I was playing Brits and throughout the game I held, or thought I held, 2 of the flags and the other 2 were marked as neutral. The final map came as a surprise as it had 3 German held VL's and one neutral. Here's the best part ... I was awarded a minor victory  Never new it was possible to win like that. I've been playing CM and reading this forum for about a year yet I still learn new things all the time. Hope my opponent enjoys the ironic end to our game.
