My game is stuck in 640 x 480 mode
Viceroy replied to Reanimator's topic in Combat Mission - Tech Support
Go to your CM folder, something like C:\Program Files\CMBO and find the Prefs file. Delete that and when you start CM you'll be asked to choose your screen resolution again. Manx is obviously a quicker typer than me [ 05-20-2001: Message edited by: Viceroy ] -
Warmaker, thanks for the tip on the 50mm ATG. I'll give it a try. I've always had better luck with the Tiger than the Panthers.

Me262, as Panzerman said it's a hard question. Here are some of my favorites ..... though this will vary from player to player. As an example from above, the Firefly has never been good for me.It can also change from game to game as certain units start to perform badly Churchill VII Sexton PzIV H StugIIIG Hetzer Daimler AC 4.2" Mortars 120mm Mortars Experimenting is the fun and challenging part of the game. A serch can yield a lot of info ..... almost too much. http://www.combat-missions.net/armour.htm is a great source of info for armour. His site also has many wonderful mods as well. Best of luck,

Me262, the advantage of withdrawal is that units move instantly with no C&C delay ..... handy if the building is about to collapse or something awful. You can only withdraw in limited directions towards your own forces.

I think the whole point is about gameplay If they don't limit the spotters and mortars in some way the whole game would only revolve around art/FO's. So that's why FWIH that BTS decided to place some artificial constraints on the FO's. I like the balance as it is now. Calling in a good fire mission on a group of troops in a woods/pines is deeply satisfying ..... I know I'm kind of sick But I wouldn't like art to become any more powerful in the game.

COMBAT MISSIONS: MODS! - Revised Shermans, by Tiger !
Viceroy replied to Manx's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
Tiger, wonderful stuff as always. You and Manx have turned me into a total mod slut I've been DL happy with my new ADSL and CM looks gorgeous now. -
Me too! My situation is the same, and I'd like to know. I have many of Tigers mods and I think he's one of the best. O/T BTW I must be the only one who likes the new boards.

What brand of video card for an upgrade??
Viceroy replied to JohnnyOmar's topic in Combat Mission - Tech Support
JohnnyOmar, I recently upgraded from a 200MMX to a TB 1Ghz 256mb Ge 2MX  And I couldn't be happier. Now I can run CM in all its glory. Well worth every penny. -
Scooleen, I agree, the the QB are one of the great features of the game. I always love the maps they do. I'd like a feature of choosing/selecting units with reduced manpower/ammo/guns etc. rather than always units with a full OB. You could give the depleted units some VP's to start with as compensation. I like the idea of making do with what you have, rather than always picking the best units.

Small QBs were all I used to play until I got my new computer. I think they can be great. I'm in the middle of a huge 3000pt multi player PBEM and I'm glad I only have a single company to take care of. BTW on the CM Map case site[?] there is a small Normandy village, that's perfect for an ambush in a small scale scenario. I found it gave me one of the most intense games I've had. Highly recommended.

Manx, it feels about right to me. I'm basing that on books like Wilson's "If you survive". All the first person accounts seem to back the "CM" ideas of CandC. Now, what does Scout reckon? Where is he when you need him

Did the Germans have much in the way of Radios at the CM level ie:company, Battalion? Or did they have to rely on runners. FWIH the Allies had reasonably reliable communications at the platoon/company level. What about the Germans? Paging Mr. Jason Crawley

COMBAT MISSIONS: A Gift From The Gods!
Viceroy replied to Manx_CM's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
Tiger, totally breathtaking ..... amazing stuff. Do they put a great strain on the computer/framerates? Are they already available? -
Don't worry, it took a while for me to work them out too Click on post reply, then on the left hand side you'll see a "smilies legend" link. Click on it and a window will open up with all the keystrokes needed. Enjoy Must have posted mine a couple of seconds too late ...... never mind, the post above was a far more complete desciption than mine. [This message has been edited by Viceroy (edited 03-25-2001).]

Who can help me with a techie question?
Viceroy replied to a topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
Are you still in Shanghai? Remember the problems of about a month ago(?) when one of the main server links across the Pacific was cut/severed. Do you think it could be realted to that, or was that problem all taken care of? -
Pritzl, You said, "it forces you to associate a word with an action rather than a color which is better for those interested in learning vocabulary, i.e. me." Why not associate a word with a color, action + anything else you can think of, as a means of learning vocab? Or did you mean, "rather than a color ONLY" ? Everything I've read has always said the more associations the merrier My own experience with teaching and studying language has always been that color was great for learning vocab. The brain works better with color and images/ rather than B/W text only. My 2 peffings as a teacher/student/linguist.

I love the Borodino map! Would be excellent for CM. I also love your small Compaigne? map, great for an ambush as you said it would be. I played the AI with that and found it very intense ...... first time I've ever got an ambush to work. Thanks, Viceroy.

The Weekly Lurker #1 "The Devil you know.."
Viceroy replied to The_Capt's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
The_Capt, easily the funniest thing I've read on this board I'm a "goon" according to your most scientific and excellent survey. Hope you post some more stuff soon. -
MikeT, I tried emailing you but it was bounced back ...... a problem I've had with other people's email as well recently. I'll email Griffin and see if that works better. Although I'm not a native speaker of Chinese, my accent is passable. My neighbor was in the KMT army during the Civil war and he has a wonderful Shandong accent (though somewhat creaky due to his advancing years) so he can give me some tips.
-
Griffin, I'd like to hear those "Chinese files" too. Don't worry, I'll be kind about your Guoyu/Putonghua, as mine is also less than perfect

Team PBEM - Cooperative CM
Viceroy replied to Seahawk-vfa201's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
Seahawk, count me in. I just got your email and I agree with all your points. I don't care if I fight for the Germans or Allies .... Just don't make me a tank driver -
WIFE TAKES GAME! Man devastated. sniff.
Viceroy replied to Gpig's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
Gpig, My solution was to get my wife to play CM. The first game she beat me .... and no, I didn't let her win .... humiliating but she loved it. She chose the Germans because they "looked cool" and she shares the same birthday as Hitler! Well, the bright side is, now she is the one demanding a computer upgrade. BTW I managed to win the 2nd game to restore some pride. -
Dorosh, I've met some liars in my time and they have fabricated great and elaborate tales .... but always they've had some element of boasting involved. Why would Sajer concoct an elaborate tale if he wasn't going to glorify himself with some heroic deeds? BTW I haven/t read Frontsoldaten as I heard negative opinions about it. Have you read " The German Soldier in WWII" by Dr.Hart? I found it good. Any suggestions for good books on the German Army? Thanks in advance, Viceroy
-
Actually, the historian critics of Sajer are far outnumbered by the historian supporters The main critic is a US army historian. If you do a search you can find the reply to the so called "errors" in the book. Most of them are very minor. But if it was a work of fiction why didn't he make himself out to be a hero? Nowhere in the book does he portray himself as even vaguely heroic. Sajer's book is IMO the greatest anti-war book I've read. Truly gives you a feeling of what the Germans felt in the Great Patriotic War/Eastern front. Well worth reading, even if it were fiction.
