  1. I've had a Sherman bog in scattered trees recently, despite the clear dry weather. In damp or wet conditions it always occurs in open ground. I find that repeated hunt/reversing over the crest of a hill can lead to problems.
  2. Purple  No funny colors on my DD mods, which I think are the best trees. You might want to check it's not a driver "issue" that's causing the problem. I like Magua's Normandy trees, but they don't work well in the winter games.
  3. It's available here from Feb 22. http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005V8EV/qid%3D1013100601/026-9053407-9107626
  4. Bruce Robert, I know what you mean! But it does look like this will be less of a problem in CMBB. FWIH we'll be able to define for the tanks an "arc of fire" and the AFV will concentrate on targets within that area.
  5. Teggy, I agree with Don's two recomendations. But the Chris Bishop is out of print AFAIK. The Oxford Companion .... is available for $17 at Amazon.com BTS should publish their own reference book like HPSS games do
  6. 007, I agree that 2) would be cool. Might be possible for CMII with the new engine.
  7. I remember Steve said he had bought a lot of books here http://home.fuse.net/nafziger/index.html Look through the booklist on that site and you'll find many, but not all the sources they used. A search for Russian books or Eastern Front books will turn up plenty of titles. Here's one thread on the topic. http://www.battlefront.com/cgi-bin/bbs/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=014345
  8. Foamy, don't feel bad. When I first started playing I had set the graphic options to not display roofs. Of course, I then forgot about that and assumed that the roofs had been blown off the buildings. I then spent half a dozen turns trying to get my mortars to fire from the upper floor of one building
  9. Dalem, I try to give the map a good once over from my side, will sometimes spin it around and take a look at it from the opponent's side, if I feel I have some sort of 'specialty' weapon that needs real attention, for instance. Other than that I try to ID key approaches and the like within about 5 minutes, start setting up my guys, and let my first impression and the 'weight' of my force setup decide where defenses get placed and attacks get started. If I have a bunch of fortifications I will definitely spend some time getting them 'correct' simply because they're stationary. I rarely watch turn movies more than once. That's how I play PBEM's! Maybe that's why I lose.
  10. Diceman, a good source of economic info is The Oxford Companion to WWII which has data on individual countries and a section on the World economy by Richard Overy. [ 01-20-2002: Message edited by: Viceroy ]</p>
  11. Just to add my vote for Panzertruppens building mods. I've tried many of the others, but have always returned to his.
  12. Well, I'm obviously not a "pro" like you guys, but I win more often on defence than attack I understand the points you're making but I think for more average players defence still has many opportunities. Obviously, having the right terrain is vital. I mean, if you can place your troops in a nice reverse slope postion things are pretty easy for the defenders. Being able to place guns in good keyhole positions, is also dependent on the luck of the map. On the defence you usually have the advantage of TRP's. Maybe it's my style of play, but when I look at a map I always see the defending possibilites first and then the problems facing the attacker. Perhaps it's because I normally play smaller 1000pts games. To try to give the defender more of a chance you could limit the number of turns, making the attacker have to hurry and not have the time for a full recon. Also, you can limit the amount of art available to the attacker so they can't have such a massive smokescreen. Spectrex, I should put my money where my mouth is and let you challenge me to a PBEM game .... I'll defend naturally and you can show me how easy it is for the attackers!
  13. Warhammer, Try the Firefly. I've had good luck with that 17lb gun on the Sherman or as an AT gun.
  14. I agree with Col_Deadmarsh, I have been playing for a while and still enjoy QB's. I"m looking forward to CMBB and the extra tweaks we'll be able to do with a QB. My favorite for PBEM is still a QB setup.
  15. I agree. I can't believe all the graphic improvements that have been added to the game. Some of the old reviews should be updated to reflect the new look of CM. BTW Scipio, I've just started using your sound mods and they really have increased my enjoyment when I watch the turn movies. I found myself ducking as the bullets whistled by!
  16. Vinci, what are the specs on your current computer?
  17. you can't order or make a squad fire them. The AI will decide for itself when to use them. As you go into 1945 the Panzerfaust starts to have a little longer range.
  18. Michael, thanks for asking that question. I've been playing CM for over a year and I'd never noticed that. No wonder I still lose to the AI sometimes [ 12-01-2001: Message edited by: Viceroy ]</p>
  19. Patrik, I think I get what you mean But I'm afraid I can't agree that two sets of foxholes is gamey. IIRC the Germans did this an awful lot. Don't know about the Allies, but then they didn't have as much practice at being on the defensive.
  20. Jeff, what's gamey about digging two sets of foxholes
  21. Chad, I prefer PBEM suitable battles, short game, small forces and a med map. Thanks for asking
  22. Anyone know of a good scenario about the difficult fighting the Canadians faced while trying to clear the Scheldt and open the gateway to Antwerp in the Autumn of '44? I'm reading about it at the moment and it sounds pretty tough. Mostly infantry with few tanks because of the flood filled land. Anyone know of something that fits the bill?
  23. Redwolf, why didn't you just ignore the thread if you didn't want to contribute? Enemy at the Gates: William Craig covers the epic battle of Stalingrad. Barbarossa: Alan Clark covers 1941-45 War on the Eastern Front: James Lucas When Titans Clashed: David Glantz The Forgotten Soldier: Guy Sajer Great for a feeling of what it was like for an ordinary soldier.
  24. Just got this email from them.... seems like BS to me, but you can judge for yourselves. Public statement In an internet forum about Combat Mission a theme concerning our "Combat Mission Graphics Enhancement Pack" (GEP) was posted. Without any knowledge about this upcoming product people declared, that we were breaking copyright laws with our product. Such insulting accusations have been made in the forum and via email without even knowing the product. We have to protest vigorously because of several reasons: How can anyone judge copyright issues of a product that he or she hasn´t seen and tested, of a product that isn´t released yet? Just by watching a webpage and a screenshot? It´s clear, that our Enhancement Pack will have similarities to mods in the internet. It just can´t be that different in any aspect. A tiger tank is a tiger tank and we cannot differ it´s look, design or size. For technical reasons the files have to have distinct names, sizes and resolutions, if they should work in Combat Mission. Furthermore camouflage designs and colors have historic backgrounds, that should not be changed just for graphical matters. So, in fact nobody can hold a copyright for specific tank designs, colors and camouflage schemes nor for file names, sizes or resolutions. The fact is, that no mod can be compared with our product, if the size in megabytes and the amount of files is concerned. No mod is 50 MB big! Our product is installed automatically and doesn´t overwrite it´s own files. Many mods overwrite each other. We will test our product by professionals und support it for free. You won´t find any support for mods. No mod has a multilingual installer (German, English, French) with which non-professionals can change the look and feel of Combat Mission. No Winzip is needed for our product and no files have to be copied with the windows explorer. In contrast to all of the mod-BMP-files our image files will have a specially rendered 3D-effect in themselves, so that not only the 3D-models have a 3D look, but also the textures. For the price of our product the custormer gets a professionally mastered CD in a DVD-Box. The mods have to be downloaded from diverse websites. This might even cost more time and money than ordering our product. Intex Publishing GmbH Eitorf, Germany, 2.11.2001
  25. Would that be breaking copyright law, or could they claim that as the mods were freeware they can use them as they like? Would it be possible for the modders to be able to stop them? I hope so. Someones work should be respected, but I don't know how easy it would be to stop them. Where's a lawyer when we need one
