  1. It wouldn't bother me in the least if the sub war was abstracted the same way convoys are. Force spending into sub "pools", escort pools, and allow for the occasional attack on capital ships. It's been done like this in plenty of games before, so I'm sure there must be a good model someone could point us to. Sorry, but it's just not working out well in SC so far. IMHO Aloid
  2. I think there's a game in there somewhere... Aloid
  3. Ditto here... You end up having to buy them to close holes in your line, as you don't end up with enough MPP's after fixing your existing units. As for the notion that there may be too many Allied airfleets, I'd have to think this is both historical, and necessary in SC, as your landings need LOTS of cover, and you want to soften the bad guys up as much as you can. Besides, dropping bombs on things is the most fun!! Aloid (one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, now go bombs go!!)
  4. I'd tell you Immer, but it would spoil our game don't you know... Aloid (Building up the army of democracy...)
  5. Hmmm.. you sure the wife, room-mate, or dog has not taken it while you were not looking? Perhaps that neighbor of yours, who is feindishly laughing next door, has received it for you, and instead of giving it to you, has decided to keep it? I smell a conspiracy! Aloid (has game in vault, away from wife)
  6. Coming from the one who turns his coat the way the wind blows. Just a joke of course... </font>
  7. Sarge, Many of us enjoy your comments, and your company. Given that, we'd still bomb your troops into oblivion without remorse... heh! Aloid (we have too many hang-ups as it is, I think I'll go hang up some shirts...)
  8. The big thing I took away from "When Titans Clashed", is the notion that these "tank" units really were different from standard infantry units. (Yes at the army and corp level) Their composure was specifically built for mobility. Standard infantry armies and corps, while they had some mechanized units, were not built in the same way at all. "Tank" units are valid as a separate unit, with different mobility and combat ratings. What is interesting to note, however, is that these formations could be denuded of mechanized troops and become clser to their infantry cousins. But that's for a differnt type of game to model. Enjoy! Aloid (Sheeet, I have to go concentrate on work...) [ August 23, 2002, 12:45 PM: Message edited by: Aloid ]
  9. Bah! Revisionist history!! Aloid (Saving up for more air power before ..... against Titan)
  10. Huh? Immer, you got me on that one... too early, need more coffee before digesting that tasty bit. Aloid (ah... coffee...)
  11. Hmmm... well, both the German's and then the Red Army employed "Panzer Armies" and "Tank Armies" as real formations, organized completely differntly from standard infantry organizations. While you're certainly correct that infantry and armor were mixed up together, there really was a big difference in how these units were built, and how they were used. I think the armor units in SC try to reflect this, and do a good job of it. Someone else made the point that how you employ these units is key, as it was in real life. Aloid (SC has grown on me, like the damn grey hairs my kids are giving me!)
  12. I like a game with balance... SC has that! I like a game that can grow... Hubert is providing that! I like a mature forum community... for the most part we have that here! "Can't we all, just get along?" circa LA riots. We all have opinions, and we probably all fear that SC's game balance and ease of play will suffer if EVERY FLIPPING IDEA is implemented. I have faith in Hubert's vision for the game, and his guidance of it so far has been superb. I see that many features are setup as options, not mandates. If Hubert includes things, and gives us the tools to turn them off if we don't like them, then we all win. If the game gets screwed up (which I doubt), then we move on. In the end, we all have valid opinions... except maybe Norse and wolfpack (just kidding) ... and there is some form of camaraderie shared between us (most of us hidding here from our wives... heh!). And we should cut oursleves some slack! ****, have another beer! Aloid (I want zoom in graphics of each battle fought at man to man level!)
  13. Yes, that's my point. The armor has to wait for a successful infantry assault, before being employed in the "exploitive" role. If in SC terms, armor was allowed to attack once to assault, then once more to exploit, it may not parallel the real world example. I'm sure there are other examples... I'm just pitching in what I've read about... Aloid (Reading is believing, but can you believe what you read?!?!?!)
  14. I recently read "When Titans Clashed, How the Red Army Stopped Hitler". In it there are repetitive descriptions of the most effective way to get armored formations to exploit break-throughs. It seemed that anytime the armor was committed too soon, it was bogged down fighting thru infantry. However, when the initial assault by infantry and supportive bombardment cracked a section of the line, THAT was the time for armor to be sent forward. In SC terms, Armor formations wait until a hole is made, and then they exploit the hole. Granted, this is from the Red Army perspective during the time when they could be offensive minded. Things may have been different when the German's were kicking butt in 1941. Nothing is black and white is it... Aloid (While a "Black & Tan" is not Black & White, it still tastes good!) 15. Wolfpack and Norse... both of you to your corners... send a PBEM game to each other, and settle this like men! I'd love to hear the AAR from that one! Aloid (pickle hube, pickled herring, it's all ficking pickles to me!) [ August 21, 2002, 04:15 PM: Message edited by: Aloid ]
  16. I think there should be a morale hit for operating too close to the "decaying Ukranian haystack" (unless it's frozen over in winter months). However, there should be a morale boost (and long command delay), for operating in the "Farmer's daughter in the Ukranian haystack". I would also assume the rarity factor for the FDITU haystack would be high. (Now that would make an interesting mod... bet MM has that one already in his bag of tricks) Aloid [ August 21, 2002, 03:07 AM: Message edited by: Aloid ]
  17. Man, you Fin-lover's are funny... If you took the Finish Army out onto the Russian Steppes (like the Rumanians, Hungarians, etc.), their "TINY" force would be obliterated. They had nothing that would equip them to compete in open combat of such magnitude. Yes they held the Russians back in the early winter war. They did nothing of the sort when the Russians came back later in the war. In fact, they completely collapsed. To rank the Fins against the Rumanians and Hungarians is completely near-sighted (or is tunnel vision a better term). My vote: No HQ, yes BBQ Hmmm... I think that qualifies as my first rant... heh! Enjoy! Aloid (now, where's my beer!) [ August 21, 2002, 02:57 AM: Message edited by: Aloid ]
  18. Leith, Are you playing with the 1.03 patch installed? I hear it improves the AI performance in a number of areas (it was good to start with, but more is better). Hint: start up PBEM games with a few people. It's very interesting. As to the Allied naval power, that's the real kicker ain't it! They are powerful, as they really should be. The real balance in the game is not continual from beginning to end. The Axis have the advantage early, and will walk all over the Allies. However, that should/can shift as the weight of the Allied forces grinds away at the Axis. Then the balance swings the other way. (usually...) Hint #2: you CAN pull off the invasion of Britain. You just have to make the right choices to support it... but that would be giving away some closely held secrets. Hint #3: do a search, you may find the answers, or get some help with hint #2. Enjoy!
