Anyone else done a gunnery range?
Splinty replied to Fenris's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
I'm by no means nearly as well read as most of you guys are,but I seem to recall that the German optics were boresighted at 1000m whereas the Americans boresighted at 500yds.I'm not really sure how much difference that would make, but I'm sure some of you more knowledgable types might be able to come up with more info, anyhoo that's my $.02 worth ------------------ Nicht Schiessen!! -
Germans, Nazis and SS -- oh, my!
Splinty replied to L.Tankersley's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
It's my belief that the German's were better at the squad, platoon and company level than their Allied counterparts, all of the nations involved had good, bad and downright terrible units at the larger level. ------------------ Nicht Schiessen!! -
The length of battles, were they really this short?
Splinty replied to spcwrnglr's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Actually I thought combat seemed to be over quickly, moving up to the battle seemed to take forever, that is however a subjective viewpoint ------------------ Nicht Schiessen!! -

Thoughts on US Combined Arms spending limits
Splinty replied to L.Tankersley's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
I would guess that's the games way of accounting for the higher Allied force levels and larger replacement pool at that point in the war. ------------------ Nicht Schiessen!! -
Keep in mind that the 40mm Bofors was a rapid fire weapon for it's bore size. I imagine several 40mm HE or AP rounds in a short space would cause major shrapnel damage as long as the impacts were grouped around the firing slit. ------------------ Nicht Schiessen!!

CM: Warsaw vs NATO ??? Please?
Splinty replied to JAGDPANZER's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
As a modern Army vet I would love a modern day version of CM,the central Europe maps wouldn't have to be much different than they are now, basically just upgrade the building textures and maybe add autobahns. You'de need bigger maps though, even with the close terrain in Germany (I was stationed there for 7 out of 12 years on AD)the hilltop to hilltop firing ranges for tanks and ATGMs would be at least double that of WW2 era weapons.Still to have troops piling out of Bradleys and BMP3s and assaulting enemy strongpoints...drool,drool ------------------ Nicht Schiessen!! -
Whats going on with TCP/IP support?!

Combat Mission/Close combat first impressions
Splinty replied to Quango's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Let's also remember that a platoon leader doesn't do things on his own either,he's got a plt. sergeant, three squad leaders (or more depending on what type of platoon he commands)six or more team ldrs.,and the iniative of all his troops to back him up.I think CM covers these things quite very well. ------------------ Nicht Schiessen!! -
Looks outstanding Tiger, not only a cool camo scheme, the thing looks like it's actually been in combat. ------------------ Nicht Schiessen!!

Lighting a candle for the "Kursk"
Splinty replied to Grognerd_Fogman's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
First I want add my prayers for the poor crewman aboard Kursk,I doubt any of them are still alive but until there is confirmation one way or the other,I'll still hold some hope. I'll bet that accident was a combination of several factors: Poor Maintainance, Semi or Poorly Trained Crewmembers Incompetance These are just my personal speculations Again my thoughts are with the crew... ------------------ Nicht Schiessen!! -
You know you've played too much CM when...
Splinty replied to Daveman's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
You know you've played too much CM when you watch Saving Pvt. Ryan 4 times in 2 days to keep the mood at max. when you use you're dinner plate as a sand table to rehearse your' next move. when you think your' landlord is an enemy squad coming to clear your' apartment. ------------------ Nicht Schiessen!! -
I'm a 12 year Army vet,and I completly agree with those who said the best of people and the worst of people. Also you may think you have a high tolerance for B.S. but military B.S. is a TOTALLY different animal. Having said that, I wouldn't trade my time on active duty for anything. The military can be a great experience, just remember that when you're pulling guard at 2AM in pouring rain with 7 hours to go. ------------------ Nicht Schiessen!!

Effectiveness of modern infanty squad
Splinty replied to Randy Myers's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
As a combat experienced former modern infantryman (80-92,Desert Storm)I believe the modern grunts would win hands down. Not because they're tougher or more determined but because modern training is 1000% better WW2 era soldiers did'nt have the MILES system to bring in factors like accuracy under fire and functional mass fire tactics, let alone the effectiveness of modern commo, arty support, better grenades, and don't underestimate the M203 I carried one in the Gulf and believe me it does a very good job. (not all of us had a video game war)The ability to put explosives on target at long range (for a foot soldier)is very valuable, and lets not forget the 40mm flechette round . by the way howard the max eff. range of a SAW is 850 M. A M16A2 can also use the new SAW rounds and get the same max. range.Sorry ,got caught up in my own rant the Max rof of the M249 SAW is 750 to 1000 rpm ------------------ Nicht Schiessen!!
