  1. Dammit, Sneakytea, lay off the babelfish, that's my gimmick! To the rest of you - I still have no time to crush you with the detail, precision, and malicious fervor which you so richly deserve. I know that patience is a virtue, and therefore something completely alien to you mongrels, but do try to keep the tooth-gnashing to a minimum, it disturbs my sleep. Ta! ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
  2. BTS hasn't provided for the modification of CM's engine or data. You could change the textures of the current infantry and armor so that they looked like modern units, but as far as the game is concerned they'd still be firing Garands and riding around in Shermans. There have been calls for a modern version of CM, so you may want to do a search on the subject. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
  3. IMO Kurosawa's best is Rashomon. Incredibly deep, good stuff. It's not as swashbuckling as the samurai flicks but it's really excellent. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
  4. I'm assuming you're asking for a 3D destroyed building model. This isn't going to happen in CM1 since the rubble tile is a 2D tile. BTS has stated that they'll handle buildings differently in CM2, so you'll have to wait until then. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
  5. While I'm not convinced that there were two flamethrowers in Allied or German flamethrower teams, I don't think it's a particularly good idea to cite Hollywood movies as proof. Rather, I think that the ability of flamethrower teams to continue firing after one casualty is an abstraction similar to a rifle squad remanning the squad support weapon if the soldier carrying it is hit. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
  6. Atari could also boast the most useless peripheral ever. Does anyone remember the dial? I forget what the official name was, but it was essentially a big round dial (well, more precisely it was a potentiometer) stuck on a square plastic block with some buttons on it. It worked with one game, some god-awful Jedi Lightsaber Duel thing. What a fantastically bad game. What an utterly ridiculous piece of hardware. What a golden age of video games. Although to be fair, Nintendo did release some spectacularly crappy peripherals during the NES days. Anyone remember the robot? ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
  7. Magua - there's definitely interest in your buildings. While I appreciate and admire the detail and effort in Panzertruppen's buildings, I really prefer the overall feel of yours. A high res version would be greatly appreciateed. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
  8. I've had precisely the opposite experience. It seems to me that bogging is more common when vehicles are reversing. So I'd say it's probably just sheer luck on both sides. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
  9. Given that CM is a company-level wargame, and not a FPS, this ain't gonna happen. It's also impossible to mod the game engine without decompiling it first, which I doubt would be looked at very kindly by BTS. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
  10. And of course, there are all those typically British moments. Picture Matildas and Valentines swarming towards the waiting 88s... ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
  11. Vanir - IIRC, you can only buy fighter-bombers in QBs weather permitting. If they're available, they're usable. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
  12. Bates, do you actually know anything about the war in the Pacific? It's not my first choice of theaters to model, but that's just a ridiculous statement. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
  13. It's trash. Two reviews: http://www.zdnet.com/gamespot/stories/reviews/0,10867,2649062,00.html http://www.gamesdomain.co.uk/gdreview/zones/reviews/pc/nov00/squad.html ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
  14. C433, 96mb RAM, 8mb ATI Rage card. New buildings aren't any slower than what I had installed before. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
  15. Hrm, yeah, good call. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
  16. I'm using both the 1.1 beta and that building mod, and I haven't had any problems with building transparency. Are you sure you didn't inadvertantly hit shift-O to switch it off? ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
  17. They are unpredictable, but when they work, they are incredibly devastating. In a recent game against the AI, I had a friendly fighter-bomber kill 2 Tigers (1 bomb between the two) and several halftracks full of infantry in the space of two turns. The rest of the game was a mop-up. IMO if the cost of fighter-bombers were lowered, you'd see an ahistorical reliance on these units, "just in case." ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
  18. After you've purchased units for both sides, go into the map editor, and on the upper left hand side of the screen, one of the options will be "Preview". Click that, CM will display the terrain, and you'll be able to place units as you would during a normal setup phase. You'll also be able to padlock units in place to prevent a human player from moving them during setup. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
  19. What are your current system specs? If you have an older machine, you'll probably get better mileage out of upgrading your processor and/or adding RAM than you would by adding a new video card. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
  20. Delete the file titled "Combat Mission Bynd Ovr Prefs" in the main CM folder, and you'll be prompted to choose a video card and resolution the next time you start the game. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
  21. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Formerly Babra: "God mitt uns!" they wailed <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Poor lads, their hands were just cold. They were clearly supplicating: "Got mittens?" ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
  22. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Wilhammer: If I had to command a unit of a1 HTs, I would put a bunch of ammo on one HT (of course the other HTs would have some ammo), and use it to feed the other's MGs as needed so that I could carry my squads in unity. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Well, fine, but I think BTS should probably stick to modelling what was done rather than what Willhammer would do. I'm assuming though that you are in fact asserting that this was done. Do you have sources to back this claim up? Also, quoting from the second link you posted: <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>The American military used a variety of halftracks during WW2; these half-tanl, half-truck vehicles were used both as infantry carriers and weapons carriers because halftracks could traverse terrain that trucks could not, and they enabled infantry to be moved into combat with relative ease. The two most widely used were the M2 (later M5) and M3 (later M9). The M3 (M3A1) was powered by a White 147-hp engine. This model could carry 13 soldiers. Also used extensivly as weapons carriers, mounting both .30cal and .50cal machine guns.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Note that this description makes a distinction between M3A1s used as infantry carriers and those used as weapons carriers. This indicates to me that it was one or the other - either you carry a full squad, or you carry MGs plus a lesser amount of infantry. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh. 23. If you have IE 4 and IE 3 installed on your system and you double click on the IE 3 icon, will IE 4 run? ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
  24. I think that CM2: the Eastern Front is separate from CMII, the next generation of the engine. I very much doubt that the next CM game will feature a new engine, or I'd imagine the development time would be quite a bit longer than the 18 months BTS has been mentioning. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
  25. Lorak - my sympathies. I can't presume to say I know how you feel, but I've lost friends, and it's a hard thing. Best wishes. To the rest of you simps - In case some of you are too thick to read your email (or to do much besides cough up hairballs, for that matter) I will repeat it here: For the next week, you will get nothing from me. My life is far more important than listening to your pathetic ravings. So your wittle men will have to wait until after next Friday for their disembowelments. I trust you will be able to pleasantly drool away the time. So long, Cop! ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
