1. What I've heard is that the P4s have an extremely weak FPU. Hopefully Intel will realize that's not a good idea sooner rather than later. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
2. IIRC the M14 takes a 7.62mm NATO cartridge. No idea what that works out to in caliber measurements. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
3. You great bloody wankers: I will be away this weekend. Gerbiltoy started making mewling noises about "wanting to see the Channel" and casting meaningful glances at the Very lights, shortwave radios and signal flags in his bag, so someone's got to go keep an eye on him. You get nothing from me, absolutely nothing. I hope you all have perfectly rotten weekends and get food poisoning from your leftovers. Gah! ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
4. Where's Gustavus Adolfus when you need him? ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
5. Question - I save incoming emails in named subdirectories. ie, all of the files I receive from Peter, for example, go to C:/games/CMBO/PBEM/Peter, whereas all of the files I receive from Croda go to C:/yadayada/PBEM/Croda. I gathered from the readme that all PBEM files needed to be stored in the PBEM folder for the front end to work. Is this correct? ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
6. Someone actually uses Hotchkisses? (Hotchkissi?) Voluntarily? ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
7. I'm pretty sure it doesn't. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
8. AFAIK, the BAR, the Bren, and the MG42 LMG all performed the same role: squad support weapon (yes, I know I'm repeating myself). ie - suppress the enemy while the squad maneuvers. I'm not sure I'd want to use a BAR as an assault rifle. Considering the round it fired I imagine the recoil would be jarring, to say the least. I think you'd have to be quite well braced to fire bursts from a BAR. Obviously I have no firsthand experience firing one, so if anyone does, I'd be curious to hear the verdict ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
9. Floreat Jerboa! ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
10. BARs are a squad support weapon, while MP44s are an automatic rifle. The closest comparison for the BAR would be an MG42 in the LMG role. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
11. Allied infantry would often also carry "found" German submachineguns. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
12. I could be wrong on this, but I don't think the Allies had official winter camo uniforms. I seem to remember reading accounts somewhere (Eisenhower's Lieutenants? Citizen Soldiers?) of soldiers in the Huertgen Forest and Ardennes areas simply raiding farmhouses for white sheets to throw over their uniforms. Obviously this could be represented in a mod, but I can't picture it looking quite right. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
13. Eh? No, CM's D3D compliant. It doesn't support OpenGL. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
14. IIRC several of the beta testers and at least one BTS employee (Matt) use GeForce cards. They're fully supported. As a rule of thumb I don't think you're going to notice a huge difference between equivalent Voodoo/GeForce cards in CM. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
15. Lessee... JA2, Civ2, System Shock 2, Worms Armageddon, um...that's been all recently. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
16. Since the TCP/IP patch hasn't been released yet, you're going to have to go hotseat or PBEM. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
17. Tommi - well put, as usual. And I believe your first sentance put it well. Without plunging into this muck with both feet, a few points. 1) Ambrose has his good points, but one must always be aware that he is not an unbiased source. He's a fantastic interviewer. He gets great material out of his interviewees. So it's a shame that he uses that material to make such highly suspect conclusions about American prowess. I'm extremely skeptical when people make claims using his works as evidence. 2) I will admit several differences between armies of different nations. For me the big ones are:

Doctrine
Training
Equipment Doctrine can be followed or not by the CM player, so it's something of a non-issue, and training and equipment are modeled. Any other differences between soldiers of different nations I am very skeptical of. I have simply seen no evidence that an average 18 yr-old in Feldgrau would react any differently to being cold and wet, or to seeing his buddy shot, or to being knocked on his back by a nearby explosion, than would an average 18 yr-old in khaki or serge. I believe that anyone claiming otherwise is, at the very least, going to have to draw on sources somewhat more reliable than Ambrose or the History Channel. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
18. The fields seem a bit too geometrically regular. I've never been to Normandy, but Burgundian farmers hedge in their fields as well, albeit not with bocage. Anyway, the fields are much less regular than you've laid them out - theres a much greater variety of shapes, and they've often got bumps and protruberances. Cheers. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
19. Dunno about Saudi, but I can't imagine there being one in Iran. "Hahaha! I fragged your ass good, Great Satan!"
20. Why should people run a search before asking a question? Gee, maybe because it'd be quicker than waiting for a response? ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
21. Um... I suggest that you implement Russians for CM2! HAHAHAHA! Now the foot is on the other shoe! ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
22.
quote:
Originally posted by PeterNZer: You big noodle make a rounded box and then make it fill white automatically and make a little triangle coming from one corner. PeterNZ

Yeah, but I can do that in mspaint Okay, please remember exactly how lazy I am. All I'm asking for is a completely free, full-featured image editor where I can pull down an attractive-looking menu and find "insert comic book-style dialog bubble". Is that so much to ask? Is the world so bleak?!?! ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
23. IIRC Nebelwerfer rockets were referred to as Screaming Meemies by Americans and Brits. ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
24. Argh, curse your lying hide! I can get it to make squiggles and doodads and nipnaps, but where are the dialog bubbles? Foul satan-spawn! ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
25. Yeah, I was hoping to find something that wasn't just a trial version since I'm a cheap bastard, but oh well Thanks Petie! ------------------ Grand Poobah of the fresh fire of Heh.
