Wrong. German 20mm cannons used a variety of ammunition, among them were the "Minengeschoss", mine shell, very thin-walled shells with little fragmentation effect but excellent pressure effect that caused major damage to aircraft structure on hits. Used from the Battle of Britain to the end of the war. apex

From my experience, Sturmkompanien are the unit suffering most from CMBO modelling. They're high priced but only field three squads same as other units. However, incoming fire is per squad, so if you pick twice the number of regular troops, you'll end up with one squad not targeted and able to return fire accuratly where your one Sturmgruppe with a handful less people is surpressed and doing nothing. Waste of points, IMHO, and historically not suited for most scenarios either. apex

Taking a platoon HQ with bad or no bonusses to sit on the sideline while the company or battallion CO takes over is SOP for me. Dunno about others. apex

Could be. But I haven't gotten one tank with gun damage back so far, versus a number of abandoned ones that did come back. apex

Unfortunately they don't even seem to be able to do it in operations. apex

BTS Testing AT 45MM on T-34 (for CMBB equation accuracy)

Will the CDV inna Box CMBO delay CMBB?
apex replied to PawBroon's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Yes, and he (or she) is pretty ugly, that is if you have belgian, spanish, orluxembourgian, euro coins, I'm afraid so (shudder). Thankfully at least the dutch spared us by making the face unrecognizable apex -
What is your favorite gun in the Axis forces for CM?
apex replied to Herr Kruger's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Have to go with the Flak18/36. Put these somewhere with an open approach and assign them a HQ with double morale bonus and they're killers against both infantry and tanks, plus they stand a pretty good chance against light artillery, too. Zooks are a bit of a problem though. apex -

"Ok, now make sure you plaster your shots evenly across the front of the other one" (debugging output from AI routines) apex

Engineers can clear minefields!

A note, this doesn't work in QBs but may be useful for scenario designers: You may place an AT gun in a building if you place the gun first and then put a building on top of it. apex

Which tank in "Captain ... Mandoline"? (Hertzer?)
apex replied to killmore's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
From the decscription it looks like the movie is set during the Dodecanese campaign in late 1943 when the germans took over the Dodecanese islands from the Italians and the British tried to move in before the campaign was aborted on orders from Eisenhower. We did an EMC in Warbirds about it, the writeup is still up at the EMC webpage, just hit "previous" and look for EMC 24 "Dodecanese". apex -
That's not quite correct. The thing with these captured weapons was, they didn't show up in any official TOE but in many cases were used by units that captured them or found them left behind, it wasn't uncommon for german units to have a soviet "Beutegeschütz" around for AT defense. In the case of the 7.62 soviet AT gun there was even ammunition production set up, not for the Marders, who were rechambered to take PAK40 cartridges, but for the normal guns. apex

What do you find the best book about German Panzers ?
apex replied to Monty's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
Agree, Doyle/Chamberlain is perfect if you want one reference book. Of course, if you want more detail, nothing beats the Spielberger series with one volume for each tank (I, II, III, ...). Don't know about avaliability in english though (that's somethign that never bothered me <eg>). apex -
You might try disabling the search feature on the UBB - it's a known performance hog, and I know of several forums that have disabled it. Pure load can't be the problem, this UBB doesn't handle more posts per day than say agw.dogfighter.com. apex

88s can't embark during battle. They can be towed though, but they have to be under tow at the end of the setup phase and wherever you put that gun down, it will stay. Very annoying, once had the Sdkfz 7 crew bail out from some long range MG fire, leaving the a PaK43 in the middle of an open field ... apex

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>I always got the impression that our COs used armoured cars <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Imperial War Museum in London has Montgomery's command tank from North Africa, a M3 Lee with the turret armament replaced by a dummy since radio sets were fitted in place of the 37mm ammunition (the 75mm hull gun remained operational). apex

This is a post that should be included in the etiquette FAQ. It is: 1) Well researched 2) carfully and humbly worded 3) adresses a legitimate issue of significance 4) very constructive 5) deals with one of my favorite vehicley in CM apex

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>If you aimed the gun much to the side (more parallel with the axles), the gun would roll over sideways when fired.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> No. Even when fired from the wheeled trailer, the two supporting legs were extended to the sides. A nice thread on the 88 is at http://www.wwiionline.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000331.html BTW, this isn't the only place where grogs hang out apex

... is visible to the opponent. Not a good idea, IMHO, in a PBEM I started plastering two patches of wood the very fist turn, suspecting guns there and maybe get my opponent to get them to fire to confirm that. Talked with him about it and he said to the effect "yes, was close but I could see it was area target". apex

Suggestion: Using TRP to aid in AT ambush.

LOS bug or are Green crews suicidal
apex replied to Iconoclast's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Had a regular Marder of mine doing the same stunt in a PBEM with Jarmo a week ago, kills "1 unidentfied vehicles", great. Overall things evened out though, my other Marder killed two Archers and two Cromwells and even survived the battle. apex -
Play By Mail is disappointing
apex replied to Master Bates's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Well, I for one have no complaints. I've got I think six PBEMs running right now, and all but one of them at a fairly decent pace. One's running a bit slowly but I can live with that (although I'm pretty annoyed because I'm losing and I know I'm losing because it's a game I set up two weeks ago and it's full of mistakes I no longer make). I guess it comes all down on who you play with, think I've been lucky so far WRT to my opponents. apex -
Olle, do that with an armored column of 20 vehicles and you'll see what we're looking for. apex
