  1. Kipanderson, that is to much a generalisation. The cold war ran from '45 to '91, and the Nato and the Eastblok both consited of lots of countries. The quality of the soldiers, be they conscript or profesiional, of both sides varied considerable between the years and the countries. The post-Korea US conscript was something completely different from the post-Vietnam one, which was quite different from the late '80's one, both in morale, command training and equipment. Same goes for the other countries, but in different years. Bertram
  2. Re the crickets: was the battle in the north zone? In that case they would be finnish crickets. THEY are though. Bertram [ January 14, 2003, 03:19 AM: Message edited by: Bertram ]
  3. Ah, a pheww from Holien, that means I get a turn soon . Bertram [ January 13, 2003, 02:53 PM: Message edited by: Bertram ]
  4. CCMOS is a nifty tool for CM, that you can use to swap bmp files. Thus instead of renaming that original Tiger bmp file yourself, and pasting a mod file in place you just click on the mod picture in CCMOS and the program does this for you. Added bonus is that you can preview all the options, it changes bunches of bmp's at one click, etc. etc. A CCMOS mod is a mod that is compatible with this tool (something to do with naming conventions and rulesets). Try it out at Combat Mission HQ Bertram [ January 13, 2003, 05:03 AM: Message edited by: Bertram ]
  5. As far as I know an assault has the victory flags mostly at the far edge of the map (for the attacker of course), while a probe has the flags more spread out and from about halfway the map. Bertram
  6. Time for the friday evening update, before I log of. The Beast against Holien is rolling (turn 3) Xmas against Dorosh has my men shivering in turn 2 Cpl Carrot is trying for that million to one chance in King of... (turn 1 send) Tuomas has let me know that he will send me the setup for Hosszupalyi (have to look that one up each time) on monday And I have send Kannonier R the Rear Guard setup, but havent heard from him yet. As I am typing this I hear that loved 'ping', signaling incoming mayhem. So this is outdated already. Bertram
  7. Have received a file from Holien, and bounced it right back, to show that I am no slacker . For the record, I both work and study (and play CM). Take that, you lazy slackers! (to be honest, I work freelance, and the study seems to go a lot faster when I have no actual jobs to do). Bertram
  8. Hi Schrullenhaft, Yes, I know, thats what I answered him. His post isn't to clear (he is Italian) but as I understood a friend of him downloaded the Mac-demo, and they tried to set up a pbem game. Strange thing is that he reported the Windows version *could* read the Mac demo file..... I can't check if this is true (or maybe only true having a CDV Win version?) as I have no Mac, but I thought you might want to know, and maybe try it yourself, as if it is true, it is 'not as intended'. Bertram
  9. If it is only 4 months old I would pull it out and bring it back to the shop. I know they will swap it with no problem where I buy my hardware (as long as I have the invoice). Bertram
  10. I am just strolling along, and it is non of my bussiness, but you could at least kill Getright. It is an annoying program, that sets itself in your start up file each time you use it, uses memory, and registrates when and what you download. It also helps you with those downloads, so if you download often, and have a connection that is often broken it might be worth the trouble, but you do need to remove it (again) from the start up files after each time you start it up. Bertram P.s.: it wont help you with your CMBB troubles though.
  11. Hello, One of our new reqruits at the Rugged Defense had the following question: >RHi Bertram, >Good to hear. >I have a questions. >Is possible play a game PBEM whith CMBB MAc >Demo 1,01 vs Win full 1,01? >If your answer is Yes; I don't understand >because befall this: >Win full 1,01 read file PBEM produce at Mac >demo 1,01 >Mac demo 1,01 don't read produce at Win full >1,01 (and error is "File is Meant for >different edition of Combat Mission) >I say: my CMBB is old. >But I have a 1,01 Mac demo version (download >in data 26/12/2003, the cmbb_demo_mac_ENG.sit >date is 16/12/2003 >and CM Barbarossa to Berlin DEMO info date >create 14/11/2002) >TIA >Alberto (Berto) It seems from his post that he could read a Mac-demo file with his Windows full version, but failed when he tried the reverse. It seems to me that the Windows full version should not read the Mac demo version at all (that would also avoid some confusion), and that was the answer I send him. I can not try myself if the Windows full version indeed can read the Mac demo version, or that something else has happened (having no Mac handy), so I thought to dump it here. 12. Wow, got 8 mails this morning, with CMBB files (yes, am playing some other games as well). Thdere goes my day of studying . Bertram
  13. It is pretty paranoid. But that doesn't mean your opponent isnt out to get you.... . The view you get is the last view you (yourself) selected. (In CMBO in general I believe, in CMBB in this scenario, not sure though). So the view your opponent gets when opening a scenario is the view *he* last selected, not the view you used. You can test this by turning tree cover on or off, or adjusting the size of the units. Bertram
  14. Though not a solution for QB's where one side is supposed to be surprised, in scenario's you can simulate this by paslocking the defenders in their setup (or part of them) and allowing the attacker to set up real close to defenders positions. The troops wont be sleeping, or just in their underpants (mod anyone?), but you can put them seriously out of balance (like the most troops in their barracks, of of to one side waiting for their chow (wasn't that a SL scenario? Wake up at....?) Bertram
  15. First it is a problem of CMBO that infantry is not suppressed enough for the amount of fire they receive. This goes for AT teams, but also for infantry storming MG's. In CMBB this is changed (though AT teams are more difficult to spot there, making ambushes much more usefull). You'll have to live with it, only positive is that you can do the same to your opponent . As for real live: most people where of course more carefull, but there were execeptions. At Arnhem for example a VC (Victoria Cross)(if I remember right, someone has the link for the VC pages?) was awarded for a soldier taking out 6 AFV's. The last he took out after running into the street, to get a better shot. The decoration was posthumous. Bertram
  16. It depends of course on the number of turns and the size of the game. And on the setting of the time limit... For a 1000 point game a 10 minutes timer is very generous, a 5 minute timer is doable (you got spare time for most turns, and are running short on some). If you go for 25 turns you would spend between 250 and 125 minutes, that is 2 - 4 hours....... In my experience that is about right for a 1000 - 1500 point game, including buying and setup. I usually set the timer to 10 minutes, but with the understanding that this time is almost never used fully. You can also set a timer to 5 minutes, with an agreement to pause it when needed (setting no timer is also possible of cousrse, but it is a nice added pressure, even if you can stop it when needed). Bertram
  17. Good to see fun can still be had with CMBO . As for the troops for 1000 points: the common opinion seems to be that a historical mix would involve mostly regulars, with some green thrown in for the new replacements (and maybe an occasional vet). Vet troops are what you would expect in the airborne, for example, with crack or elite for special forces. In general troops in CMBO are to brave (or stupid), and despite the name regulars would not have been regular in real live. In CMBB the average experience level of has been lowered accordingly. 18. I have been playing a QB assault as attacking force. In this QB my opponent was lucky enough to have all flags reasonable close together so that he could defend them as one group. He also bought loads of barbed wire, trenches and some mines for good measure. The terrain was hilly with some scattered woods (looks real nice by the way), the weather cold and with a snow cover. Some advantage to the defender (snow slows down the attacker and wears him out) but some to the attacker to (good cover advancing). I made a mistake not buying any pioniers, but apart from that things went not to bad. I could advance real close (say 30 mtrs from the wire), and had nice covered jump of points. I had some arty (105 mm)to soften him up, and plenty of 81 mm mortars to lay a thick smoke cover. The assault went not to bad. Some casualties, but that is to be expected against dug in troops. I managed to get some units inside his defensive line, but most troops broke and dropped back into their jump of points due to enemy fire. There was a smal hole in his line though, and his men there were supressed from 3 sides. Ideally I would now rush in an other compagny of troops, but I used up all my troops in the assault. My plan B was to crack open part of his line by using my infiltrated troops (3 squads) to hit his trenches in the back, while my covering troops (3 squads) hit them from front. This trench was occupied with 2 squads, that had been under continues fre for 10 minutes (105 mm arty and then inf. fire). In practice this went nowhere. His 2 squads just turned around, slaughtered my men in their back, and then turned back to shooting the troops at their front. All the time their exposere was max. 7%, and often ony 5%. This brings me to the question I wanted to ask: should the attacking force, if up against a force dug in in trenches and using barbed wire and mines, not have a greater ratio in points (and thus forces) then currently in CMBB? The defender got so much stronger then in CMBO that it seems to me that the advantage is to the defender now. Any scenario designer that has experience with this? People that have played a couple of assault QB's against entrenched troops? Bertram
  19. In CMBO you could toggle on and of the effects of night, just as you can toggle on and of the fog. In CMBB I can not find this feature. Did it disappear? Though fighting in darkness adds suspense, I hate setting up my troops in darkness. I can not see what troops I have, let alone see the command lines. Any help would be appreciated. Bertram
  20. Tournament house seems to have gone belly up, or is at least not maintained anymore (as the results were processed automatically that means almost the same thing). The same ladder results and total of games has been up for about a month now, and chat is not working. Bertram
  21. Easy V reported in. Unfortunatly he has lost his file due to a hard disk crash, while I managed to loose mine due to same. Seems we are stuck. Pity, it was just getting interesting. Treeburst, if you need an other North of Ephrom score, ask my opponent (Michael Reddy), I also lost that file (I thought I had send on the score already). Bertram [ December 11, 2002, 05:10 AM: Message edited by: Bertram ]
  22. Hi, I havent heard from Easy V for some time now (and that right when our game got tense, he finally got some inf among my guns). He stated that he was having some trouble (hard disk failure), and that he would contact me when he had solved that. Since then I have had a system crash myself, so I lost his adress. Havent looked to hard though, been to busy with CMBB . North of Eprom was finished, thought the result was send in, but appearently not. I lost that file as well, so I'll ask my opponent to send in the result (if I can find HIS adress). Dont you hate system crashes? Bertram [ December 09, 2002, 02:08 AM: Message edited by: Bertram ]
  23. Nope, not pre planned. I know that one. I have been waiting 3 turns for a bit of smoke on that bunker. Now it wastes all my ammo, and I still have no smoke.. Almost 10% of my points for this battle, up in smoke . Bertram
