  1. From what I understand the 512 MB stcik might slow down the setup. Not because of windows, but because of how your MB handles the memory. Depending on the setup some MB like it better if 2 or 4 slots are filled. This is especially true of some AMD setups. It also depends on the speed and the quality (latency among others) of the memory. Your MB will switch to the lowest common stable speed for the memory. As the 512 MB is older it might be slower.... Only way to be sure is to test the system under real world loads in both setups (ie. with and without the 512 MB).
  2. Will this be modelled? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sz507_qAVZs&NR
  3. Samsungs 940BF and 931BF are the 19 inch 2 ms models. (the 940 is the older model, but the specs are the same as far as I can make out). (just checked, bought one two weeks ago under this name, but the name already changed again. The new name is 960BF - the BF designation seems to be the fast respons one). Dont know what the 22 inch model would be named, 260 BF???. But be warned, the 19 inch one is about 300 euro, the 22 inch one about 800. (in the Netherlands, including VAT, etc.).
  4. As it is about the attack on the ambassy in Athens, I guess the article appears only in the localized version of the magazine. So a free copy is useless for you Steve, you won't understand the interviews anyway...
  5. I didnt know we left handers were better shooters (never tried to shoot anything), but we are much smarter, braver and more handsome. The last might be a bit difficult, but for the first two there could be modifiers...
  6. GPS works by having the exact position of the sattelites known, and then measuring the time the signal(s) takes to get to the receiver. Turning them off or moving them arond defeats the system. You can not use a moving satelite, and each time you move a sattelite you have to recalibrate the system. And the sattelites have limited fuel, and no fuelling stations up there.
  7. Not coincidently (one presumes) after Bush had approved a program that would test stronger lasers (and a guidance system) to destroy satelites. As the program went ahead anyway, maybe the Chinese thought that message was to subtile for the US governement.
  8. The fact that the Chinese did this is more a demonstration of capability then real news. Satelites are by there nature sitting ducks (you can calculate their orbits years in advance, changing course is using fuel, which is always in short supply, and needed to keep them where they are), so if you have orbital launch capability and decent calculating power you have the capability to hit one. As china has launched orbital satelites before, this isnt really news (Japan, Russia and the EU are just as capable of taking satelites out). I think it is more of a warning to the US, that their stand on the space treaty (banning wepons in space) needs some rethinking. (The US refuses a treaty like this, because they need the room to do in space whatever is in national interest (read - test and employ weapons) but at the same time they "strongly encourage" other nations not to do the same. Those other nations generally think that kind of arguing is lacking.
  9. But the motion capture of the dancing girls is the fun part for the devs!!
  10. Where are you located? A sea quake played havock with connections running through the chinese sea or somewhere there. Bertram
  11. Started up the engines at 20:00 CET sunday, dropship crashed at 20:05. (2.00 and 2.05 resp.). No fight... (actually my HD stopped working. Solved this morning, but no gaming yesterday) Bertram
  12. I'll try to drop in...no promisses how long I can stay. Bertram
  13. Nicely done.... I should rtfm, but where should I drop those maps (and updates for scenario"S?). And how do they get selected? Only on special servers, so everyone has the same official released scenario on the official server? Bertram
  14. Damn that mister Greenwich, for inventing the time zones  . At the time the server is getting populated, I need to log off to get some sleep. 3.00 pm seems to be 22:00 over here, and I need to get up mondays at 6:30 for work (damn the guy who invented work  )
  15. As for possible conflicts with China: I would think China making avances the other way, direction Burma (or how it is called nowadays) might be more likely. It plays to their strenghts (manpower instead of marine power), gives more advantages (like energy sources), has less negative consequences(it does not bring in loads of money), and the regime does not have any real friends. Of course logistics might be a tad difficult. And just buying the country from the generals with the Chinese reserves of dollars might be more effective...

    Wish List

A sound wish: for the vehicles make the motor sound refect the speed and/or the power output, and not make have motor sound (and always the same) that only plays when you press the forward button (and when, according to the developers, you ADD to the power applied). Bertram
  17. Same for me...ping to Library isnt under 250, while the "regular"server is usually about 130-150. Makes quite a difference... (Located in Europe also)

I would like to add some wishes: as it is you get the "engine" sound when you hit the <w> (forward)key, when you stop depresiing it your engine (sound) stops. This gives the impression that you need to keep that key depressed for driving along. According to the devs this is wrong, each time you depres the key you actually add more power, and leaving it alone makes you move at a constant speed. Those two things are not campatible and tend to confuse. I would like a constant engine sound when driving, and a heavier sound when driving faster/uphill (thus when adding power). Second, the behaviour of tanks and cars seem to be different in this regard. Driving a tank, and leaving the power alone will make it coast to a stop. A car will keep going. This makes it extra cnfusing, as you need to keep hitting that key in a tank, or it will stop, while doing the same thing in a car will keep you acelerating.

Poesel: where did you get that file from? I seem to be unable to find it... In the CentreOfMass for the chassis there is a -10.0 value...is this original or is this you trying some things out? Edit: found it, I was looking fopr ShrikePhysics... There are actually 2 files for the Shrike out there, one old one (19 august 2006, called ShirkeA) with {Type}WheeledChassis{/Type} {ID}1{/ID} {ModelFile}ShrikeChassis0.cob{/ModelFile} {Origin}0.0,0.0,0.0{/Origin} {Mass} {Density}0.035{/Density} {CenterOfMass}0.0,2.0,-10.0{/CenterOfMass} {Width}7{/Width} {Length}7{/Length} {Height}2{/Height} {Type}Wheel{/Type} {ID}7{/ID} {Joint} {Type}Hinge2{/Type} {Anchor}-6.3,-5.6,-2.2{/Anchor} {Axis}0.0,0.0,1.0{/Axis} {Axis2}1.0,0.0,0.0{/Axis2} {LoStop}0.0{/LoStop} {HiStop}0.0{/HiStop} {SuspensionERP}0.2{/SuspensionERP} {SuspensionCFM}0.1{/SuspensionCFM} The new one (from 25 oktober 2006, called Shrike) has your values. Stands to reason that with the very low Density, changing the CentreOfGravity has not much impact.... Might be interesting to see what happens when you upp the density again, and change the centre of gravity around.

On dropships: stuff (like planes) crashing explodes because they contain something that can explode, the fuell on board. If the dropships use anti-matter (as per background story) they would either not explode, if the anti-matter stayed contained, or go in a spectaculair blaze, if the containment failed. Viewing the energy requirements of lifting from the gravity well repeatedly, the blaze would be of nuke intensity (ending the game abrupt....maybe a good reason to make firing on dropships a no-no?). If the ships would not explode they would crumple on inpact. If the impact point was a hill side or some such, and the impact at a shallow angle (or on hard terrain at a shallow angle) several pieces would shatter around (like tail pieces and/of wings of airplanes in accidents where they break up). In soft ground they would bury pretty deep (in the soft clay here WW2 airplanes or airplane parts are still found occasionally, the heavier parts like engines usually at about 2 mtrs below ground level). As to driving: Poesel, I understnad driving backwards gives a different effect - in fact I was trying to say that in the real world you turn over faster driving backwards, in contrast to the experience in the game. (There was a Dutch made car, the Daf 66, that was one of the first variomatic users. They could go as fast backward as forward. A TV programm organised a backward driving race on the Dutch grandprix circuit. Of the 66 entries only a few finished, and even those had rolled over repeatedly. All others crashed to hard to make the line). I am surprised that the centre of gravity isnt used in the calculations. Makes you wonder how the caracteristics are calculated... just each wheel (corner?) independent? In that case it would not be strange that the back wheels keep going, once they are airborne...no friction to slow them down. [ October 30, 2006, 10:49 AM: Message edited by: Bertram ]

Feels like some crazy mechanic set up the suspension, or there is a design flaw in the verhicle (wrong placing of wheels vs centre of gravity). Did you notice that making a corner at speed will flip the verhicle, but making the same corner going in reverse will not flip the verhicle? Try that with your car at home..... Also, moving at some speed and hitting "x" will flip the verhicle. Not sideways, but nose down, ass over end (very easy with the Strike, quite often with the Paladin). For that to be physically possible the centre of gravity has to be high above the wheels, the wheels close together (or the front wheels near the centre of gravity), the brakes over powered, and the grip of the wheels extraordinary. No real verhicle will ever do that (some bad designed ones will skid and turn over sideways, but that is another story).
  23. Indeed, Volcanic Deposits does also get stuck at the minimap building step. Disabling texture caching does not help (as I expected, texture caching is a separate step). My system is a Athlon 64/3000 (1.8 GHz) with 2 G internal memory and a 6600GT/PCI card. Should be enough to handle it I would think... Options settings for Dropteam are: terrain quality and viewing distance high, anti aliasing off Full screen, sound, VBO, shaders, texture caching, particles, los, hi-res and collision damage on. Video mode 1280x1024x32, Sound hardware generic. (I could try dropping in a Soundblaster Live! card, would help my CPU a little bit I guess). Edit: set viewing distance and terrain to medium, and all options off, that started the game. Viewing distance to high and terrain to high worked too, but adding VBO made the program hang. Some pointers on what variables have influence and which do not would be appreciated. Edit2: deleted and reloaded the NVidia drivers, and that did the trick. (I thought I had already the latest version, but I could be wrong. XP has the habit of getting the not-latest-drivers automatically from the internet) [ October 29, 2006, 02:44 AM: Message edited by: Bertram ]
  24. This is 245 MB, be warned (though it downloaded at 650 KB, which was nice)
