  1. Hey--I just realized: With CMBB's ability to import maps for QBs, it will be possible to play virtually any situation on maps that approximate the familiar SL/ASL map environments...
  2. I duno if this will help, but I noticed that CMBO never liked any Antialiasing setting other than "none" or "x4". I would get weird graphic effects on start-up when Antialiasing was set to "quinqunx" or "x2." I haven't experimented with it for CMBB, though.
  3. Hi Matt, A very minor issue compared with what others have had to deal with here, but... When I installed, the installer got to 100% and simply closed itself. I expected some kind of "congratulations, you have successfully installed CMBB" message, but there was none. I started the game and it appears to work perfectly. Should there be a "completed" message at the end of the installation, or does it just end like that? How many total files should I have in my scenarios folder? Thanks!
  4. (grumble grumble)... don't have it yet... (grumble grumble) It's just as well, really. This weekend my in-laws are visiting and I have lots of grading to do. NEXT weekend, however, my beloved spouse is going out of town for three days and two nights.
  5. Knocking out my opponent's last tank with the very *last* round of artillery available to my 81mm spotter. It landed directly on top of the turret, brewing the vehicle instantly. What made the moment sweeter was that it happened two seconds from the end of the very last turn of the game...
  6. I hope this isn't the case. As a North American, I want my European opponents to have have their copies as soon as possible--that way they can send me turns while I'm still asleep! Crossing my fingers for the Olde Worlde, Paul Roberts
  7. I wonder if pistol ports couldn't be abstracted into the ability of an AFV to defend against close assault. Assaulters attacking a vehicle with good ports should be more likely to fail. (Of course, I don't know if the calculations for close assaults take some kind of AFV-specific defense value into consideration at all. Perhaps it all depends on the assaulter's values. Anyone?)
  8. I'm no grog on this sort of thing, but wasn't the SS accepting just about any able-bodied volunteer towards the end of the war (and even pre-Bulge)? SS units were equipped differently, and probably led differently, but there weren't too many German "perfect specimens" left for the services to choose from in the winter of 44-45. I'm for just letting the CM system of Crack/Elite units serve for the early/mid-war SS and the cream of the other armies. Later in the war I could even imagine "green" SS being thrown into the fray. (The problem, I think, lies in scenario designers being too generous with Crack/Elite units, thus diluting the meaning of the levels.)
  9. Gawd, I wish I were Irish! I'll be there in spirit, but, alas, not corporeally. Have fun.
  10. Wow--me too! Like others above I had set my card's antialiasing to "quinqunx" (for Il-2, no less). Setting it back to "let application control antialiasing" cleared my problem right up. Thank goodness.
  11. Hi all, Please pardon me for posting this message outside of the tech forum! For reasons you will see below, I'm trying to reach GeForce 4 users who are not having problems with CM, and who therefore might not be checking the tech forum at all. Here is the text of a message I posted just now in the tech forum. (Please, for Madmatt's sake, reply there and not here...) "Recently there have been some threads reporting problems with GeForce 4 video cards, especially with CM showing only a blank screen or else freezing (requiring a reboot) at the end of a turn. Having just updated from a GeForce 2 to a Geforce 4, I'm sorry to say that I'm having the same troubles. The CM splash screen will not show when I start up (only giving me music and a black screen) until I minimize and re-maximize. When I attempt the play a turn, the graphics are fine until I hit Go/Done to end the turn--then CM freezes and I have to ctrl-alt-delete my system. My question is, does *anyone* have CM running properly with a GeForce 4 card? If so, please tell us what drivers you are using and whether you have made any special tweaks. Thanks!"
  12. Hi all, Recently there have been some threads reporting problems with GeForce 4 video cards, especially with CM showing only a blank screen or else freezing (requiring a reboot) at the end of a turn. Having just updated from a GeForce 2 to a Geforce 4, I'm sorry to say that I'm having the same troubles. The CM splash screen will not show when I start up (only giving me music and a black screen) until I minimize and re-maximize. My question is, does *anyone* have CM running properly with a GeForce 4 card? If so, please tell us what drivers you are using and whether you have made any special tweaks. Thanks! My set-up (CM and GeForce 4 *not* working together): AMD 1.0 GHz processor 640 MB RAM PNY GeForce 4 Ti4400 128MB RAM NVidia drivers 28.32
  13. Hi all, I want to bump this topic since I am having the same problem. Having just upgraded from a GeForce 2 to a GeForce 4 Ti4400, using 28.32 drivers, I'm getting a black screen when CM starts. It's necessary to "esc" (minimize) CM and then re-maximize it in order to see the opening menu. In the game, the graphics look good. However, when I finish a turn and hit "Go" the game hangs on a frozen screen. It's necessary to ctrl-alt-del and reboot after that. Any solutions, or should I just go back to earlier drivers? Thanks.
  14. Unless I'm misremembering, the experience bonus does not change the unit's label, but *does* affect all the behind-the-scenes calculations. In other words, the unit will still be called "Green," but will fight as if "Regular" (at +1 bonus) or "Veteran" (at +2 bonus).
  15. Two of my favorites have been "South of Sword" and "Bridgehead at Benicourt."
  16. I can't tell you myself. But there's a book by Richard Overy called "Why the Allies Won" that deals well with economic and production issues.
  17. Well, actually, they're all kind of like that really...
  18. I starting checking in on the (old-old-style) bulletin board for what was going to be Computer Squad Leader back just before the break between BTS and Avalon Hill. I think I must have first seen a reference to the game in a comment on Combatsim.com (back when it was still free). When the first CM screenshots came out, I went to look and found them graphically lacking--but I *was* impressed with Charles and Steve's explanations of how the game system would work. It looked like CM would be a game with lots of potential. Well, CM dropped off my radar again for a few months until, sometime between the Alpha AAR and the release of the Beta Demo, I started visiting the message boards again. Soon I was lurking almost every day. Remember the long wait between the Beta Demo and the release of the full game? Remember the Night of the Refresh monkeys? Those were the days. Oh, but wait... CM:BB is coming soon... THESE are the days!
  19. I'm really looking forward to CMBB and the Eastern Front, but I have to admit that CMBO is going to seem somehow diminished in comparison. After we get used to the new features in CMBB (MG zones of fire, vehicle crew morale, perhaps even some improved AI routines, etc.), I think CMBO is going to feel somehow "lacking." It might feel a bit like taking out the Chevy when you know you have a Porsche in the garage. But I think this is inevitable. Steve and Charles should continue to move on, especially since they've indicated that they will be coming back to the Western Front at some point in the future. I do find myself wishing that BTS would move on to the new CM engine right after CMBB is released (and bug-free). I'd be happy to wait for the desert and the early war to come later.
  20. Franko, these look excellent! When will they be available? For anyone who hasn't yet tried any of Franko's scenarios, they are always very well-researched and a great fight.
  21. On Plato's outhouse wall: "The particular Sherman that you just lost to a hidden 'schreck team is not the Real Sherman. Rather, it is only an imperfect reflection of the Sherman that exists in the world of Forms, which is at this moment neither Knocked Out nor Abandoned, but perfectly safe and secure atop the victory flag that you, in this lower world, have foolishly rushed without sufficient infantry support..." "A perfect Republic would be governed by philosopher-kings, whose relative status would be determined by ladder tournaments bound by the most stringent and historically-accurate rules of unit purchase and deployment. There is no room for Gamey Bast*rds in our utopia..." "Go ahead, waste your artillery on the tree-line... *hic!* There's nothing there, I tell ya!... *burp*..."
  22. It's my understanding that the experience level of a HQ is the baseline to which the bonus is added. In other words, a Regular HQ with +1 in all areas is equivalent to a Veteran HQ with no bonuses at all. Thus, your Elite HQ with no bonuses is still better than a Regular HQ with +2 in everything. Since there are no "negative" bonuses, experience still means a lot for HQs regardless of their random perks. Also, I believe the CM manual states that platoon HQs tend to have more combat and stealth bonuses, while Company and Battalian HQs have more morale and command radius bonuses.
  23. Hehe. Actually some of the American voices sound like they just came right off a Mississippi farm, while some of the others could be from Brooklyn. It's a nice touch.
  24. You can download them, but it will cost you a couple of cartons of cigarettes. Lucky Strikes, preferably.
